There is no universal shade percentage or target light level for corals. In a 2017 American Samoa experiment, 50% and 75% shade both reduced bleaching in three coral species during thermal stress; 75% provided greater protection under the intense light conditions studied. Those percentages are experimental treatments, not general recommendations. Reef teams can assess light reduction by comparing underwater PAR at coral level in shaded and comparable unshaded conditions, then tracking coral health separately.
What the evidence says about coral shade
Coelho and colleagues’ 2017 study combined aquarium experiments with a field-platform experiment in American Samoa. It tested no shade, 50% shade and 75% shade on Acropora muricata, Pocillopora damicornis and Porites cylindrica during thermal stress. Both shade treatments reduced bleaching in the studied corals, and heavier shade offered greater protection in the experiment. The paper also describes limits to protection as cumulative heat stress rose. Read the study record at NOAA.

This does not establish that every coral needs 50% or 75% shade, or that either level is safe or effective at other sites, depths, seasons or durations. The study does not provide a species-independent target irradiance. Treat its shade levels as useful experimental reference points, not a prescription for reef management.
How to measure shade with underwater PAR
PAR, or photosynthetically active radiation, describes the portion of light relevant to photosynthesis. The study measured irradiance using an underwater spherical quantum sensor and PAR meter. A reef team can use this instrument category to compare the light reaching corals under shade with exposure in an appropriate control condition.

- Define the comparison. Record which corals are shaded and which form the control, and note the treatment level. Keep comparisons as similar as practical in species, depth and site conditions.
- Measure at coral level. Take underwater PAR readings at or near the coral surface in the shaded and control conditions. A reading away from the coral may not represent the light exposure the coral experiences.
- Log the context. Record site, depth, time, species and treatment/control status alongside each reading so the measurements can be interpreted and compared.
- Repeat under a consistent plan. Use comparable positions and procedures when taking readings over time. The cited sources do not establish a universal sampling frequency or target PAR value, so teams should set a locally appropriate plan.
PAR readings show whether light exposure changed; they do not by themselves show whether the intervention helped the coral overall. Keep light measurements distinct from biological outcomes.
Measure coral response as well as light
Track coral condition with the project’s goal and applicable regional survey procedures in mind. NOAA’s 2020 Coral Reef Restoration Monitoring Guide frames monitoring around progress toward stated restoration goals. NOAA’s National Coral Reef Monitoring Program provides regional protocols for coral demographics, bleaching and mortality, as well as benthic cover; its methods differ between Atlantic and Pacific jurisdictions. Use the appropriate local procedure rather than treating one regional method as universal.

The U.S. Coral Reef Task Force’s 2026 bleaching monitoring SOP recommends surveys before bleaching, at peak bleaching and at two post-bleaching timepoints. It tracks four metrics:
- Live coral cover
- Bleaching prevalence
- Bleaching severity
- Recent mortality
These outcomes help teams distinguish a reduction in measured light from a meaningful biological result. Shade should be evaluated as one intervention within a monitoring plan, not assumed beneficial just because PAR fell.

How to interpret results across sites
When comparing treatments, interpret shade level alongside measured PAR at coral depth, coral species, site conditions and biological outcomes such as bleaching and mortality. A result from the American Samoa experiment cannot by itself establish the right shade treatment for another reef. Regional survey protocols and project goals also matter when deciding what to monitor and how to interpret change.
The 2026 SOP is designed to scale across monitoring groups with different levels of capacity. Its announcement describes it as “intentionally simplified, streamlined, and scalable,” but teams should still use the relevant local protocols for their jurisdiction and project.
