Chosen-one and grounded RPGs are story approaches, not mutually exclusive genres. A chosen-one story puts the protagonist’s exceptional destiny or world-shaping importance at its center. A grounded story makes events feel connected to believable limits, relationships, institutions, and consequences. One game can do both: its hero may be central to a vast crisis while still dealing with scarcity, political trade-offs, and the people around them.
What makes an RPG a chosen-one story?
In a chosen-one story, the protagonist’s importance is established by something exceptional: prophecy, lineage, cosmic selection, a singular power, or another role that sets them apart. The plot often turns on that status and may build toward a conflict with world-scale stakes.

That premise does not automatically make the writing weak or the player powerless. The useful question is how the story handles the protagonist’s special role: can the player shape what it means, decide how to respond to it, or change who benefits from the outcome?
What makes an RPG feel grounded?
A grounded RPG makes the world’s constraints matter. Characters have needs; communities and institutions have their own interests; and actions can produce consequences beyond the next dramatic scene. Grounded does not mean ordinary, historically realistic, or free of magic and science fiction. A fantastical premise can still feel grounded if the setting treats its material and social realities consistently.

RPG designer Josh Sawyer described the principle in a PC Gamer interview: “people do have to eat, they have to drink, they have to deal with the reality of the world.” His point applies even when a setting includes speculative or deliberately handwaved elements. How to compare the two approaches
Rather than sorting every RPG into one of two boxes, look at how it establishes the protagonist’s importance, what limits shape the world, and how the player can affect events.

| Story feature | Chosen-one emphasis | Grounded emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Starting status | The protagonist may already be marked by destiny, lineage, or unusual power. | The protagonist may be an ordinary person, an outsider, or a professional with a defined place in the world. |
| Why the protagonist matters | Importance is often established by prophecy, selection, heritage, or a singular ability. | Importance may emerge through skills, relationships, and decisions. |
| Conflict and stakes | The story may center on a world-scale threat. | The story may foreground survival, community, factional politics, or personal stakes; large stakes can still fit if the world’s constraints remain meaningful. |
| World and consequences | The story may focus on the hero’s role in a major crisis. | Resources, trade, history, institutions, and community can shape what happens and who bears the cost. |
| Player expression | The player may choose how the protagonist responds to an exceptional role. | Choices may alter relationships, factions, scenes, gameplay, or endings. |
Why the labels can overlap
Scale and grounding are separate questions. A protagonist can be destined to confront a world-threatening crisis, while the story still pays attention to limited resources, competing factions, and the consequences of decisions. Conversely, a story with local or personal stakes can still give its protagonist a conspicuously exceptional role.
Player freedom is another separate dimension. CD Projekt Red describes story-driven games as moving between free-form play and more controlled moments used to carry a theme or make a point. It also notes that choices can reach beyond dialogue into level design, gameplay, and endings. A tightly directed scene does not by itself make an RPG ungrounded, just as a branching conversation does not determine whether its protagonist is a chosen one. Returnal’s creators have likewise discussed balancing Selene’s grounded human elements with power fantasy and grit, while describing gameplay actions as part of how the player defines her alongside her backstory. It is useful as an example of those qualities coexisting, not as a definitive example of either category. PlayStation’s creator story about Returnal.
Use player agency as a separate test
When deciding whether an RPG makes a chosen-one premise work, ask what the player can express through play. Does the player shape relationships or faction outcomes? Do decisions change scenes or endings? Does gameplay help define the protagonist, or does the written backstory do nearly all the work?

- Choose a stronger chosen-one emphasis if you want a story built around an exceptional identity, destiny, or role in a major crisis.
- Look for a stronger grounded emphasis if you want the world’s needs, institutions, relationships, and trade-offs to shape the plot.
- If you want both, look for games that pair large stakes with believable constraints and give the player meaningful ways to respond.
The question is not whether an RPG has an epic journey or a chosen protagonist. A reader in an informal Reddit discussion put it this way: “There’s a way to make a good RPG game without an epic journey and a chosen one protagonist?” The answer is yes: a story can make survival, community, politics, or personal change compelling without making its hero cosmically special.
