How Much RAM, Storage, and Graphics Power Do You Need for a Gaming PC?

Choose gaming-PC memory, storage, and graphics power around the games you want to play and the resolution, frame rate, and settings you expect—not a single universal parts list. In the examples below, 16 GB of system RAM is a common listed requirement, but one game recommends 32 GB for a higher performance target. Storage needs range from 85 GB to 160 GB for individual games, and graphics-card requirements vary substantially by game and target.

Start with your games and performance target

A game’s minimum and recommended specifications are useful starting points, not guarantees that every system with those parts will deliver identical results. First decide which games matter to you, then note each game’s target resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, and required features. Compare your planned build against those specific targets.

For example, a 1080p/30 FPS low target is a different requirement from 1440p/60 FPS on high settings. Upscaling can also be part of a publisher’s stated target, so check the fine print rather than comparing resolution and frame rate alone.

How much system RAM do you need?

In these four game listings, 16 GB appears as a minimum or recommended system-memory figure. It is a useful reference point, not a universal ceiling or a promise that every future game will need no more. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 lists 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended for its stated high, 1440p/60 FPS target.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 16 GB minimum; 32 GB recommended Minimum: low, 1080p/30 FPS. Recommended: high, 1440p/60 FPS.
Hogwarts Legacy 16 GB minimum and recommended Minimum: 720p/30 FPS, low. Recommended: 1080p/60 FPS, high.

System RAM and GPU video memory (VRAM) are different resources. AMD explains that a discrete graphics card has dedicated video memory, while integrated graphics use Unified Memory Architecture and share system memory. Increasing system RAM does not turn it into an equivalent amount of dedicated VRAM. AMD recommends leaving the integrated-graphics UMA frame-buffer setting on Auto for most workloads.

What graphics card do you need?

Match the GPU to the games and targets you chose. The publishers’ example requirements below show why there is no single graphics card that can be prescribed from resolution alone. They are separate game listings, not results from a common benchmark, so they should not be read as a direct performance comparison.

VRAM capacity is one consideration, not a measure of overall GPU speed. AMD’s Radeon examples pair 8 GB cards with 1080p, 12 GB examples with 1440p, and 16–24 GB examples with 1440p/4K or 4K. Those are AMD’s product examples, not a universal capacity rule or cross-brand ranking. The page dates its peak-usage test to June 28, 2023, and its Far Cry 6 comparison test to May 16, 2023; treat those figures as context for AMD’s examples rather than a current benchmark of every card.

Before choosing a card, check its performance against the target games and settings, then confirm that it fits your case and is supported by your power supply. The available game specifications and AMD examples do not establish a current cross-vendor benchmark ranking or price-to-performance winner.

How much storage should a gaming PC have?

Separate the space needed for one game from the capacity you need for your whole library. The cited listings range from 85 GB for Hogwarts Legacy to 155 GB for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH and Rise of the Ronin, and 160 GB for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. These are individual game requirements, not a complete-library recommendation.

Game Available storage listed Drive requirement
Hogwarts Legacy 85 GB SSD preferred; HDD supported.
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH 155 GB SSD required.
Rise of the Ronin 155 GB SSD required; NVMe SSD recommended.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 160 GB SSD required.

Estimate capacity from the games you intend to keep installed at once, then leave room for other files and updates. Drive expectations are game-specific: some listings require an SSD, while Hogwarts Legacy prefers one but supports an HDD. Check the current listing for each game before buying or reinstalling it.

A practical way to size a build

  1. Write down your target. For each game, record the resolution, frame rate, graphics quality, and whether the stated target uses upscaling.
  2. Check current game specifications. Compare minimum and recommended system RAM, GPU examples, storage space, and drive type for every game you care about.
  3. Assess the GPU beyond its VRAM number. Use the game’s GPU requirements as a starting point, and do not treat VRAM capacity alone as evidence that one card is faster than another.
  4. Choose system RAM for the overall workload. Treat game system-memory requirements separately from graphics-card VRAM, and check that the capacity and kit are compatible with your motherboard and CPU.
  5. Plan usable storage for your installed library. Add the space required by the games you plan to keep installed and allow for other files and updates; use an SSD where a game requires one.
  6. Check physical and power compatibility. Confirm the GPU fits the case and that the power supply can support the chosen card before assembling the PC.

Game requirements and hardware change over time. Recheck the publisher’s current listing and component compatibility when making a purchase; these examples do not establish one ideal build, a universal storage total, current prices, or performance per dollar.
