Eight gigabytes can work for lighter browsing and office use, but leaves less room for demanding browser sessions, heavier multitasking, development tools, or virtual machines. These are buying recommendations, not universal Linux requirements or benchmark-derived thresholds.
How much RAM do everyday Linux tasks need?
Choose capacity by the work you expect to do, not by a single number attached to Linux as a whole. Browsing, documents, and email generally call for less headroom than running many demanding applications at once. Browser and application workloads vary, and the available official requirements do not specify how many tabs a given amount of RAM can handle.

| Installed RAM | Practical fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 8 GB | Lighter browsing, email, and office tasks with modest multitasking | A more constrained choice if you expect demanding tabs or several heavier applications to run together |
| 16 GB | A practical target for everyday use with more room for multitasking | Check the laptop’s price and whether its memory can be upgraded; no comparative price or performance figures are established here |
| More than 16 GB | Consider when your routine includes development workloads, virtual machines, or substantial multitasking | Choose according to the applications you use and the laptop’s supported capacity; there is no universal amount for these workloads |
The table is practical editorial guidance, not a measurement of application memory use. If your use is mostly light browsing and office work, 8 GB may be workable. If you are buying new and can choose, 16 GB is the more flexible everyday target.

What do Linux distribution requirements say?
Linux distributions set their own requirements; there is no single RAM minimum shared by every Linux system. Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop requirements for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS state: “Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS requires a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, a minimum of 6 GB RAM and 25 GB of free storage space for a comfortable experience.” Canonical identifies Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS as its latest LTS desktop release and lists 6 GB system memory. Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop requirements are specific to Ubuntu, not a universal Linux minimum or a benchmark for comfortable everyday multitasking.

- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
As another example of distribution-specific scope, KDE Linux’s installation page lists 2 GB as an installation requirement. That figure is not a recommendation for everyday laptop multitasking. KDE Linux installation information describes its own distribution.
Should you upgrade RAM in a laptop you already own?
Do not buy a generic memory module based only on the fact that the laptop runs Linux. RAM can be soldered in place, and compatible memory type and maximum capacity depend on the exact laptop model. Find the model number and consult the manufacturer’s service documentation before choosing an upgrade.

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 17.3" HD+ (1600x900) Display, Intel UHD Graphics 620

- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
- Identify the exact model. Check the laptop’s label, system information, or purchase documents; a product-family name alone may not identify its memory configuration.
- Read the manufacturer’s service documentation. Confirm whether memory is soldered, whether an accessible slot is available, which memory type is supported, and the maximum capacity for that model.
- Compare the documented options with your intended use. If the RAM cannot be upgraded, make your next laptop purchase with the desired capacity installed from the outset.
How can you check whether a laptop suits Ubuntu?
RAM capacity is only one part of Linux compatibility. Canonical says Ubuntu works on a wide range of devices, recommends checking its certified hardware list, and suggests trying Ubuntu to see whether the hardware works as expected. Certification or a trial can help assess hardware support; neither establishes whether memory is upgradeable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check Canonical’s Ubuntu Certified hardware list for listed devices.
- Canonical names HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Framework among certified-hardware partners on its Ubuntu download page. This is a way to explore certified hardware, not a guarantee that every model from those brands is certified.
- If practical, try Ubuntu on the device and check the features you depend on before committing to it.
Choosing between 8 GB and 16 GB
For a new everyday Linux laptop, favor 16 GB when the budget and model options allow it. Choose 8 GB only if your use is genuinely light and the constraints suit you. If you expect development, virtual machines, or heavier multitasking, look for more headroom and verify the laptop’s supported memory before buying.
