A five-player server is usually better positioned near the upper end when players explore different areas or keep many chunks loaded. These are third-party planning estimates, not an official ATM10 requirement, so check your current server files and monitor actual usage before adding hardware or renting a larger plan.

The practical answer
“How much RAM does ATM10 need?” has two answers because server owners often use “RAM” to mean different things. The first is total memory available to the machine or hosting plan. The second is the Java heap assigned to Minecraft with the -Xmx setting. The heap is only part of the server’s memory footprint: the operating system, Java itself, native libraries, launch tools and other services also need room.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a friend group of roughly five players, a sensible starting point is 12–16 GB total system RAM. Within that allocation, an 8–12 GB Java heap is a practical range. A configuration around 12 GB total with an 8 GB heap leaves approximately 4 GB for the operating system and non-heap overhead. A 16 GB machine gives you more room to use a 10–12 GB heap while retaining similar headroom.
One 2026 hosting guide reports 10 GB of server-side RAM as a pack-author minimum and 11 GB as a recommendation for more players and loaded chunks. Those figures are reported by Space-Node and are not verified against an official ATM10 pack page. Treat 10 GB as a lower boundary to test, not as a guarantee that every world and player count will run well.

Total RAM versus Java heap
Total system RAM
Total RAM is the physical memory in a self-hosted computer or the memory included in a hosting plan. It must cover Minecraft and everything around it. If the machine has 12 GB installed, assigning all 12 GB to Java leaves no safe margin for the operating system and can cause swapping, crashes or failed starts. The useful figure for planning is therefore the total allocation, not just the value after -Xmx.
Java heap (-Xmx)
-Xmx caps the Java heap, where Minecraft and its loaded mods, entities, inventories and world data are held during operation. -Xms, when present, sets the initial heap. Increasing -Xmx can prevent out-of-memory failures when the world genuinely needs more space, but it does not make a slow processor or a struggling disk faster. An oversized heap can also make garbage-collection pauses longer, so “more” is not automatically better.

Why an 8 GB heap can require 12 GB total
A manifest-related recommendation lists an 8,196 MB heap for ATM10 and says about 12 GB of total RAM is needed after overhead is included. Another 2026 guide says the ATM10 user_jvm_args.txt uses -Xmx8G and pairs that with roughly 12 GB total RAM. The two figures describe the same planning principle: reserve several gigabytes outside the heap instead of treating the heap cap as the whole server requirement.

RAM by player count and server scale
Player count is only a starting proxy. Exploration in separate directions, chunk-loading machines, multiple dimensions and long-running automation can raise the working set even when the number of connected players is unchanged. Use the following ranges as planning bands rather than hard limits.
| Server profile | Total RAM starting range | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Very small private world | About 12 GB | Suitable starting point for a small group when exploration and chunk loading are moderate. |
| About five or more players | 14–16 GB | Provides more room for simultaneous exploration, bases and loaded machines; the 12 GB end can work if activity is light. |
| 10–20 players | 16–20 GB | Plan toward the upper end when many players are online in separate regions or dimensions. |
| Public or large server | 20–24 GB or more | Headroom depends on concurrent players, view and simulation settings, chunk-loading behavior and the rest of the server stack. |
The ranges above come from Space-Node guides published in 2026. They are commercial hosting guidance, not measurements published by the ATM10 developers. A server that stays within its memory budget at 10 players may still need a larger heap after a new pack release, a world-generation change or a new collection of automation builds.
What Java version should ATM10 use?
The guides that discuss ATM10 cite Java 21 as the runtime. A separate MC-Node result is only verified by its title, so confidence in that citation is lower than for the memory ranges. Before starting the server, check the current ATM10 server instructions and the Java requirement bundled with your specific release. Do not assume that a Java version used by an older modpack is correct for your current installation.

On a machine you control, run java -version and confirm that the intended Java 21 installation is first on the system path. If a hosting panel offers a Java selector, choose its Java 21 option and restart the server. A wrong runtime can produce launch errors or mod-loading failures that look like memory problems but are not fixed by adding RAM.
How to set the heap safely
- Record the machine’s total memory. Check the operating system’s memory page or the hosting panel’s plan allocation. Note how much is already consumed by other services, backups, databases or web panels.
- Locate the ATM10 argument file or startup script. Many installations use a file named
user_jvm_args.txt, while some launchers place flags in a script or panel field. Open the file supplied with your own server rather than copying arguments from an unrelated pack. - Find every heap flag. Search for
-Xmxand-Xms. One report says ATM10’s shipped argument file contains-Xmx8G; another search result suggests some ATM server files have no active heap setting and only a commented-Xmx4G. Because those reports conflict, inspect your copy and make one deliberate setting instead of appending a second-Xmx. - Choose a conservative cap. For a 12 GB machine, begin near an 8 GB heap. On 14–16 GB total, 8–12 GB is reasonable depending on player activity and what else runs on the host. Keep several gigabytes free for the operating system and native overhead.
- Save a backup and restart. Stop the server cleanly, copy the original argument file, change the value, then start again. A heap change takes effect on restart; it cannot be applied reliably by leaving the existing process running.
- Verify the effective setting. Read the startup log or hosting panel’s launch command and confirm that the intended Java executable and a single active
-Xmxvalue are being used. If the log shows a different value, another script or panel setting is overriding the file you edited.
How to tell whether you need more RAM
Measure during the busiest period, not immediately after an empty-world startup. Record the number of concurrent players, dimensions in use and whether chunk-loading machines are active. Compare memory behavior after the server has been running long enough to load the normal bases and routes.
- Likely memory pressure: the process approaches its heap cap, the log reports an out-of-memory condition, restarts occur during exploration, or garbage collection becomes frequent as the heap fills.
- Likely CPU or tick pressure instead: the heap has ample unused space but the server still falls behind when machines run, world generation spikes or many entities tick. Adding RAM alone will not solve a processor or tick-time bottleneck.
- Likely host-level pressure: the operating system begins swapping, the panel reports nearly all plan memory consumed, or unrelated services are competing with Java. Reduce competing workloads or move the server to a machine with more total RAM before simply raising
-Xmx.
Increase the heap in small steps and observe the same workload again. If an 8 GB heap remains well below its cap and the host has free memory, there is no benefit in jumping straight to 20 or 24 GB. If the process repeatedly reaches the cap while several gigabytes remain available outside Java, a modest increase may be justified.

Why older ATM figures can mislead
Older All the Mods releases do not establish a requirement for ATM10. ATM-8 server files shipped with -Xmx6G, and users reported that value was too small for their worlds. That is evidence that modpack generations can differ, not a reason to copy 6 GB or any other historical flag into ATM10. The current pack version, world age and mod configuration matter more than the name “All the Mods” alone.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLikewise, a search summary mentioned allocating 10 GB to a singleplayer client on a computer with 32 GB system RAM, but the original source was not identified. That number is not a server requirement and should not be used to size a dedicated ATM10 instance.
Self-hosting versus a managed server
The RAM decision is similar in both environments, but control differs.
Best Value
| Decision point | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Total RAM cost | Uses memory you already own or must add to the computer; electricity and hardware life are part of the real cost. | Appears in the recurring monthly plan price; the supplied figures do not establish a universal price for any provider. |
| Java flags | You can inspect and edit -Xmx, -Xms and the Java executable directly. |
The panel may expose a memory slider or hide some flags; verify the effective launch command and ask support when settings are overridden. |
| Scaling headroom | You can add physical RAM or move the instance, but hardware upgrades may require downtime. | Changing plans can be faster, but the new allocation and heap still need to be checked after migration. |
In either case, buy for the workload you actually expect. A plan advertising 16 GB total does not mean 16 GB should be assigned to Java, and a 32 GB home computer does not guarantee good performance if its processor, storage or network is inadequate.
A practical sizing plan
Five-player private server
Start with 12 GB total and an 8 GB heap if players tend to stay near one another and the host runs little else. Choose 14–16 GB total if players regularly split up, keep many chunks loaded or want more room for future builds. Watch peak usage before changing anything.
Recommended Free Tools
Ten to twenty players
Plan for 16–20 GB total. Begin nearer 16 GB only when the host is dedicated and activity is moderate; move toward 20 GB when simultaneous exploration and automation are routine. Keep the heap below total memory by a clear margin.
Public or heavily populated server
Use 20–24 GB or more as an initial planning band, then validate it with real concurrency. Public servers need capacity for uneven peaks, not merely the average number of players. Configuration, moderation tools, backups and other services also consume memory outside the heap.
Limitations of the published figures
No verbatim requirement from the ATM10 pack author, Enigmatica, a standards body or an official ATM10 document was retrieved for these numbers. Most estimates come from hosting-company articles published in 2026, which have a commercial interest in selling server plans. The 10 GB minimum is explicitly an unverified reported pack-author figure, and the 11 GB recommendation is a third-party guide. The Java 21 citation has lower confidence because only the title of the relevant result was verified.
Pack releases change. A new version can alter memory use, startup arguments or Java compatibility, so re-check the server files included with your exact ATM10 release before changing a production instance. The safest process is to start in the 12–16 GB range for a small group, leave operating-system headroom, confirm Java 21, and scale only after observing the server under its real workload.
