For a Windows PC, Microsoft’s general guidance is 8 GB of RAM for keeping a device running long term. Photo or video editing and other high-performance projects may call for 16 GB or more. These are practical guideposts, not guarantees: the right amount depends on what you do and which device you have.
What does RAM do, and how is it different from storage?
RAM is a computer’s short-term working memory: it holds information the device is using right now. It is different from storage, such as an SSD, which keeps files and applications when the device is turned off. More RAM can help a computer handle demanding tasks, but it does not replace storage capacity.

For those cases, check the operating system or software maker’s requirements and consider the files and tasks you actually work with.

Is the Windows 11 minimum enough?
Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the minimum memory for Windows 11. That is a system requirement, not a recommendation for comfortable everyday use or demanding work. For general long-term use, Microsoft separately recommends 8 GB; photo or video editing and other high-performance projects may suit 16 GB or more.

Does a Copilot+ PC need a different amount?
Yes. Microsoft lists 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory as a minimum for Copilot+ PCs. This is a requirement for that device class, not a requirement for every Windows 11 computer. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications for the distinction.
Can you upgrade your computer’s RAM?
It depends on the exact computer. Before buying memory, check the manufacturer’s specifications for your model. Confirm whether the RAM is upgradeable, which memory type and form factor it accepts, the maximum supported capacity, and which configurations are supported. Some devices do not allow a memory upgrade, and a module that fits physically may still be incompatible.
