How Much RAM Do You Need for Gaming, Work, and AI Apps?

The right RAM capacity depends on your workload, software, and computer. Here’s how to compare gaming, creative work, and local AI needs without mistaking minimums or survey popularity for a recommendation.

There is no single RAM capacity that suits every game, work project, and AI app. For ordinary mixed use and gaming, compare 16 GB and 32 GB; demanding creative projects and running AI models locally can require more. The right choice depends on what you run at the same time, the specific software or model, and what your computer supports.

Start with what you actually run

RAM holds data that active programs need to access. Capacity guidance is most useful when tied to a workload—not to an operating system’s minimum or a slogan about future-proofing. Consider the game or project, other applications open alongside it, and whether your computer can be upgraded.

  • Gaming: Check the current requirements for the specific game and account for browsers, voice chat, streaming software, and mods you use at the same time.
  • Creative work: Project size and media type matter. Adobe’s current Premiere recommendations, for example, distinguish HD from 4K-and-higher video.
  • AI: Separate cloud-hosted services from local inference. With cloud AI, the model runs remotely; local inference uses the computer’s resources, so model size and configuration matter.

As a starting point rather than an official requirement, 16–32 GB is a useful range to compare for everyday mixed use and gaming. Heavy creative work or local AI may call for more, but the sources below do not establish a universal capacity for either category.

Gaming: use system requirements, not survey popularity

Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey reports that, among surveyed Windows systems, 32 GB was the largest individual system-RAM category at 43.28%, followed by 16 GB at 37.60% (Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey). The monthly survey is voluntary and anonymous. It describes what participating Steam customers have installed; it does not show what a particular game needs or prove that one capacity improves frame rate or smoothness.

For your own setup, look up the game’s current official requirements, then consider what else runs alongside it. A game played alone and a game played while streaming, chatting, and keeping several browser tabs open are different memory workloads. A survey category cannot settle that comparison for you.

Work: match capacity to the project

Software makers’ minimums and recommendations are more useful than one blanket number—but apply only to the named software and versions. Adobe’s Premiere requirements page, updated September 9, 2026, lists Windows 11 version 24H2 requirements for Premiere versions 26.0, 26.2, 26.3, 26.3.2, 26.5, and 26.5.1. For that Windows configuration, Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum, recommends 16 GB for HD media, and recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher media (Adobe’s Premiere technical requirements).

For Apple silicon, the same page lists 8 GB minimum and 16 GB unified memory recommended. Those figures are Premiere guidance, not a general recommendation for every office or creative application. Check the current requirements for your own software, operating system, and project type.

AI apps: cloud use is different from running a model locally

Using an AI service in a browser does not mean its model weights are stored in your computer’s RAM; a cloud-hosted model runs remotely. Local inference is different: the computer must accommodate the model and its working memory, with practical needs affected by model variant, quantization, context, other open apps, and whether some work can use GPU memory.

As model-specific general guidance, Ollama’s Llama 2 library says models generally require at least 8 GB of RAM for 7B, 16 GB for 13B, and 64 GB for 70B. Ollama notes that higher quantization levels require more memory (Ollama’s Llama 2 model library). These are not guaranteed working-set measurements for every setup, nor requirements for all AI software.

Microsoft lists 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM among the minimum requirements for Copilot+ PCs, alongside other hardware requirements. That is a device-class requirement, not a universal memory recommendation for AI apps. Windows 11’s general minimum is 4 GB, and Microsoft cautions that apps and features may need more (Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications).

Before buying RAM, confirm the computer can use it

A capacity target does not tell you which memory to buy or whether an upgrade is possible. Check the PC maker’s specifications or, for a desktop, the motherboard documentation before shopping.

  • Supported maximum capacity and memory generation
  • Form factor, such as DIMM or SO-DIMM
  • Number of memory slots and whether any are available
  • Whether the memory is soldered or replaceable

Microsoft directs users to the PC manufacturer for system-specific compatibility. A phrase such as “32GB DDR5 RAM kit” is not a device-specific recommendation: compatibility depends on the exact computer.
