How Much RAM Do You Need for Gaming, Streaming, and Content Creation?

A practical RAM guide for Windows gaming, streaming, and Premiere editing, with separate recommendations for HD, 4K, and Apple silicon unified memory.

For a Windows PC, 16 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point for gaming and lighter streaming; 32 GB is a more flexible target if you play games while streaming, edit video, or work with 4K media. These are planning recommendations, not universal requirements: the game, creative workload, operating system, and computer’s upgrade limits all matter. On Apple silicon Macs, memory is unified rather than a replaceable desktop RAM kit, so Windows upgrade advice does not apply.

Start with your workload, not the biggest RAM number

RAM is the computer’s short-term working memory. For choosing a system, the useful question is not simply whether a game or app can start with a certain amount. It is how much memory makes sense for the combination of operating system, game, streaming or recording software, and creative applications you expect to use at the same time.

A published minimum is a threshold for the named product or operating system; it is not a whole-PC recommendation for every other task. Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum system requirement for Windows 11. That figure describes the operating system’s minimum, not a sensible target for gaming, streaming, or video editing.

Use 16 GB as a practical Windows entry point for gaming and lighter streaming. Consider 32 GB when you want more headroom for gaming alongside streaming software or other active applications, or when your editing workload calls for it. The workload-specific guidance below is more useful than treating either amount as a rule for every PC.

How much RAM is sensible for gaming?

For a Windows gaming PC, 16 GB is a reasonable starting point. HP’s Gaming Desktop and Laptop Hardware Guide 2026 describes at least 16 GB of DDR5 as a starting point for a gaming PC. It gives 32 GB for a gaming-plus-streaming configuration. Those are HP’s manufacturer recommendations, not the result of a universal test across all games.

Game requirements differ, and the available evidence does not establish one amount that guarantees a good experience in every title. Check the current system requirements for the specific game you plan to play, particularly if it is an edge case for your computer or workload. Do not infer that every game needs 32 GB just because a gaming-and-streaming setup may benefit from that target.

Also distinguish memory capacity from other PC specifications. The cited guidance supports a capacity-planning range; it does not establish a universal RAM speed or timing recommendation, nor show that faster memory can compensate for insufficient capacity. A capacity figure alone cannot promise a particular frame rate or smoothness.

How much RAM do you need to game and stream?

If you run a game and streaming software together, 32 GB is the more flexible Windows target. HP specifically lists 32 GB for a gaming-plus-streaming configuration. That is a configuration recommendation, not a promise that 32 GB is required for every stream or that memory alone determines stream quality.

OBS’s documentation cautions that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The OBS Project published that statement in its official system requirements documentation on August 25, 2021. OBS says CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and directs users to its Auto Configuration Wizard. In other words, a PC’s ability to meet a software requirement does not settle whether the whole setup can deliver the stream you want.

OBS’s Steam listing gives 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended for Windows. Those figures describe the software listing, not the amount of RAM needed by a gaming PC running OBS alongside a game. Do not use them as a substitute for the combined-workload target.

How much RAM do you need for video editing?

For Adobe Premiere 26.x on Windows, Adobe’s technical requirements, last updated September 9, 2026, distinguish minimum memory from recommendations by media resolution:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Premiere 26.x workflow or platform Adobe memory figure How to interpret it
Windows, minimum 8 GB Adobe describes the minimum as for HD editing.
Windows, HD recommendation 16 GB Recommended memory for HD media.
Windows, 4K and higher recommendation 32 GB or more Recommended memory for 4K-and-higher workflows.
Apple silicon, minimum 8 GB unified memory Applies to the Apple silicon macOS requirements table.
Apple silicon, recommended 16 GB unified memory Applies to the Apple silicon macOS requirements table.

These figures are for Adobe Premiere 26.x, not a guarantee for every editing application or every project. They do show why “video editing” is too broad to map to one number: Adobe’s Windows recommendation rises from 16 GB for HD to 32 GB or more for 4K and higher.

If your work is primarily HD in Premiere on Windows, 16 GB matches Adobe’s recommendation. If you edit 4K or higher, use 32 GB or more as the planning target. Adobe’s Apple silicon figures refer to unified memory; they are not instructions to install a desktop or laptop memory module.

Windows minimums, software requirements, and workload targets are different

Several published RAM figures can look like competing answers when they are actually describing different things. Microsoft’s 4 GB Windows 11 minimum is an operating-system requirement. OBS’s 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended figures are Windows requirements on its Steam listing. Adobe’s Premiere values are application specifications, separated by platform and editing resolution. HP’s gaming guidance describes PC configurations for gaming alone and gaming plus streaming.

These values should not be collapsed into one universal “minimum.” An operating system or application may list a minimum to run that product under its stated conditions. A workload target addresses the combined use a reader actually plans to make of the computer. That distinction is why a system that meets Windows’ 4 GB minimum is not thereby a sensible gaming or editing PC, and why OBS’s software listing does not settle the memory needs of a game running at the same time.

Choose a target for your setup

  • Gaming on Windows, without a demanding simultaneous workload: 16 GB is a reasonable starting point. Check the specific game’s current requirements for exceptions.
  • Gaming while streaming or keeping other work active: 32 GB is the more flexible target; HP gives 32 GB for gaming plus streaming.
  • Premiere HD editing on Windows: Adobe recommends 16 GB for HD media.
  • Premiere 4K-and-higher editing on Windows: Adobe recommends 32 GB or more.
  • Premiere on Apple silicon: Adobe lists 16 GB recommended unified memory and 8 GB minimum. These are platform-specific specifications, not upgrade-kit guidance.

If you combine categories—for example, playing a game while streaming and editing or encoding other media—there is no cited universal formula that adds their separate recommendations together. Use the more demanding relevant workload as a planning signal, and verify the requirements for the specific game and applications. The available figures do not establish a single capacity that guarantees performance for every combination.

Before buying RAM, verify that your computer supports it

A 16 GB or 32 GB capacity target only helps if the memory can be installed in the computer. The recommendations above do not establish that a particular kit is compatible with a particular PC. Check the exact system or motherboard manufacturer’s specifications before ordering; the same capacity target does not mean every type of module fits every computer.

  1. Identify whether the system is upgradeable. Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model. Do not assume that memory can be replaced merely because the workload guidance suggests a larger capacity.
  2. Check the supported memory generation. Confirm the DDR generation supported by the system. HP’s 16 GB gaming starting point specifies DDR5, but that does not mean every gaming PC accepts DDR5.
  3. Match the form factor. A desktop DIMM and a laptop SO-DIMM are different module form factors. Confirm which one the specific computer supports.
  4. Check maximum capacity and slots. Consult the manufacturer’s supported capacity and slot information. The cited workload recommendations do not say how many slots a particular system has or its maximum capacity.
  5. For Apple silicon, use the unified-memory specification. Adobe’s Apple silicon table lists unified memory. Do not treat it as a request to buy desktop DIMMs or assume it can be upgraded like a conventional PC memory kit.

For example, a 32 GB DDR5 desktop kit made up of two 16 GB modules is only a category-level option for a desktop that supports DDR5, that capacity, and that module arrangement. It is not a universally compatible or tested recommendation. Confirm the exact system support before purchase.

What these figures can—and cannot—tell you

The figures give useful starting points from Microsoft, HP, Adobe, and the OBS Project, but they do not come from a single independent study measuring a universal RAM need across games, streaming, and content creation. The gaming recommendations are HP’s guidance; the editing specifications are Adobe’s for Premiere 26.x; and the operating-system and OBS figures apply to their respective products.

None of these figures, by themselves, establishes how a particular game will perform on a specific PC or proves that adding RAM will solve a performance problem. Nor do they establish a universal speed or timing to buy. Treat capacity as one part of choosing a system, and consult the relevant game and software requirements along with the manufacturer’s compatibility specifications.
