An iPhone does not use one universal “nearby accessory” system. AirPods setup, ordinary Bluetooth pairing, app-guided accessory discovery, Ultra Wideband ranging, and Find My each serve different purposes. Dynamic Island is separate: it can display supported alerts and Live Activities, but Apple’s documentation does not say that every proximity detection or accessory setup prompt appears there.
Why iPhone can show different prompts for nearby devices
A prompt that appears when an accessory is close may look like a general iPhone feature, but the visible result depends on what you are trying to do. Pairing new earbuds is not the same task as selecting a Bluetooth device, letting an app find its own accessory, measuring distance to a compatible peer, or locating a lost item. Each has its own documented flow.

That distinction matters when identifying a prompt. Apple documents a setup animation for AirPods, a device list in Bluetooth settings, an accessory picker that an app can present, distance-and-direction information from supported Nearby Interaction sessions, and Find My’s locating interface. Dynamic Island, in turn, is a place for supported alerts and Live Activities—not a documented universal display for nearby devices.

Apple’s consumer instructions describe what action produces a prompt and what the user can do next. They do not publish a single algorithm that explains every internal proximity decision, or establish that a particular radio technology causes every setup animation. It is safest to identify the interface and task before attributing a mechanism to it.

AirPods: a proximity-triggered setup animation
Apple’s AirPods setup instructions specify a simple sequence: go to the Home Screen, keep the AirPods in their charging case, open the case, and hold it next to the iPhone. A setup animation should appear; tap Connect and follow any instructions specific to the model. This is a documented proximity-triggered setup experience, but the instructions do not explain the private detection algorithm behind it.
Do not assume that this animation is a Dynamic Island Live Activity or that it proves the iPhone used Ultra Wideband. Apple documents the action and outcome, not a universal radio explanation. If you are trying to interpret a display, its shape and context are more useful evidence than the fact that the case is nearby.
Apple also says AirPods can set up automatically through iCloud on supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This is distinct from the first-time nearby setup animation: it describes setup across supported devices associated with the account. The exact requirements depend on the AirPods model and software. For example, Apple’s current guidance lists iOS 26 or later for AirPods Pro 3. Check Apple’s model-specific requirements rather than applying one version threshold to every AirPods generation.

If the AirPods animation does not appear
- Try the documented setup position. Return to the Home Screen, place the AirPods in their charging case, open the case, and hold it next to the iPhone.
- Use Bluetooth as the fallback. Put the AirPods case into pairing or discovery mode, open Settings > Bluetooth, and select the AirPods if they appear. Follow the model’s instructions for making the case discoverable.
- Check compatibility. Confirm the iOS requirement for the exact AirPods model and that the iPhone is running a supported version. Apple’s “Connect your AirPods and AirPods Pro to your iPhone” and “AirPods requirements” pages cover the setup flow and model-specific conditions.
- Separate account setup from initial pairing. Automatic setup on other supported devices depends on signing in to the same Apple Account; it is not a substitute for checking the model’s first-pairing steps.
Bluetooth accessories: pair them in Settings
For a standard Bluetooth accessory, Apple’s general instructions are to put the accessory in discovery mode, turn on Bluetooth in Settings, and select the device when it appears. The iPhone must be within about 33 feet (10 meters) of the Bluetooth accessory to pair, according to Apple Support. This is an approximate pairing distance, not a promise about how far every accessory can be detected or remain connected in all conditions.
Bluetooth pairing does not require UWB. The relevant steps are the accessory’s discovery mode and the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings. If a device does not show up, verify that it is actually discoverable using its manufacturer’s instructions, then check the list in Settings > Bluetooth. Apple’s range figure concerns pairing; it should not be generalized to Find My, Nearby Interaction, or every device’s ongoing connection range.
App-guided accessory discovery is a separate route
An accessory may be set up through its maker’s app rather than through the general Bluetooth list. Apple’s AccessorySetupKit framework lets developers build a picker for supported Bluetooth or Wi-Fi accessories: the app supplies identifiers for the accessories it supports, discovers matching nearby devices, and lets the user select one. Apple says this approach can avoid broad Bluetooth or Wi-Fi access for discovery.

For a user, the practical implication is that opening Settings > Bluetooth may not be the entire setup process. Follow the manufacturer’s app flow when the accessory is designed to be configured there. A picker presented inside that flow is evidence of app-mediated setup; it does not mean iPhone automatically scans for every product around it. AccessorySetupKit is a developer implementation choice, and it applies to apps that use it.

Nearby Interaction is Apple’s developer framework for supported spatial interactions. With compatible Ultra Wideband (UWB) hardware and a participating app, it can report a peer’s direction and distance. Apple’s developer overview describes foreground reporting in meters. This is useful for an app that needs a spatial interaction; it is not a general explanation for AirPods setup, Bluetooth device lists, or Dynamic Island prompts.
Third-party accessory sessions have additional steps. The app establishes a data link to the accessory, receives configuration data, and uses that information to begin ranging through Nearby Interaction. A nearby accessory alone is not enough: the supported hardware, app implementation, connection, and session all matter.

Background behavior has its own conditions. Apple’s developer documentation describes requirements involving a Bluetooth LE pairing or connection, or a Live Activity on iOS 18.4 and later, alongside the app’s required capabilities. Those rules are relevant to developers building a continuing interaction; they do not turn every accessory into a background-ranging device.

Find My is for locating a supported item, not for initially pairing an ordinary accessory. For AirTag, Apple’s Find Nearby or Precision Finding experience can provide distance and direction on compatible iPhones. The cited Apple Support guidance says Find Nearby is available on iPhone 15 and later and requires an iPhone that supports Ultra Wideband. Walls, materials, and objects between the phone and AirTag can affect performance, so the directional guidance may not behave the same in every setting.

What Dynamic Island does—and does not tell you
On supported iPhone models, Dynamic Island can show alerts and Live Activities while the iPhone is unlocked. Apple’s examples include an AirDrop connection, Maps directions, and a Voice Memos recording. A user can touch and hold an activity to expand it, swipe up to collapse it, and tap to switch between two activities. Apple says iPhone 18 Pro models can show up to three Live Activities at once.
These examples describe ongoing activities or alerts, not a universal accessory-proximity indicator. A nearby device could produce a setup animation, a Bluetooth settings entry, an app’s own picker, a system alert, or an app Live Activity; the available Apple documentation does not say generic accessory detection itself is shown in Dynamic Island. Identify the activity displayed before concluding that the Island detected an accessory.
Dynamic Island is also limited to supported iPhone models. If the same accessory flow looks different on another iPhone, model support may explain the display difference, but it does not change which setup route the accessory uses. Check the iPhone’s model and the accessory’s software requirements before treating a missing Dynamic Island display as a pairing failure.
Choose the right steps for the problem
- AirPods setup prompt missing: use the case-opening setup sequence, then pair from Settings > Bluetooth if necessary; verify the exact model’s iOS requirement.
- Another Bluetooth accessory is absent: put it in discovery mode according to its instructions and select it in Settings > Bluetooth, staying within Apple’s approximate 10-meter pairing distance.
- The accessory is managed by an app: complete the manufacturer’s app setup and select the device in its picker if prompted.
- You need to find a lost item: open Find My and use the supported locating option for that item; Precision Finding depends on compatible iPhone hardware and can be affected by surroundings.
- You see something in Dynamic Island: inspect whether it is an alert or Live Activity such as AirDrop, Maps, or Voice Memos before linking it to nearby-device detection.
For compatibility questions, use the Apple Support page for the specific AirPods or Find My task and Apple’s developer documentation for app frameworks. These features change with hardware and software releases, so model-specific guidance is more reliable than assuming one proximity rule applies to every accessory.
