The maximum depends on the exact motherboard model and revision, the installed CPU, supported memory type and module configuration, and sometimes the BIOS version. Check the board and processor specifications together before buying memory; without both model numbers, no exact maximum can be established.
What determines your system’s RAM limit?
Motherboard specifications
Start with the official specifications and manual for the exact motherboard model. Look for maximum memory capacity, supported memory generation and type, number of DIMM slots, and supported module populations. Read the footnotes: a stated capacity can depend on a particular BIOS version or other conditions. A chipset name or socket alone does not establish the board’s maximum.

CPU memory support
The processor is a separate constraint. Its built-in memory controller connects directly to RAM, so check the CPU manufacturer’s specifications for maximum memory size and supported memory type as well as the motherboard’s limits. Intel’s guidance recommends consulting the processor specifications and the motherboard vendor or manual for compatibility: Intel’s processor memory lookup guidance and Intel’s motherboard buying guide.
Memory configuration and BIOS
Slot count is not the whole answer. A board may support different capacities or speeds depending on how many modules are installed and which slots they occupy. Follow the manual’s recommended slot order, and check for any BIOS prerequisite attached to the capacity or memory support specification.

How to find the maximum for your PC
- Identify the motherboard. Find its exact model name and revision, if the manufacturer lists revisions separately. A model name on the board itself or in system information can help; confirm it against the manufacturer’s product page.
- Read the matching board specifications and manual. Record the stated maximum capacity, memory type, DIMM count, supported population, and any BIOS-related footnotes. MSI’s support guidance describes how to check a motherboard’s RAM specifications: MSI: How to check RAM specification?
- Identify the installed CPU. Check its official specifications for maximum memory size and supported type. The CPU limit may be lower than the board’s published capacity, so do not use the motherboard number by itself.
- Check the memory QVL. Search the board maker’s qualified vendor list for the exact memory part number and the intended module count. ASUS explains its model-specific QVL lookup process here: ASUS: How to query the CPU or memory QVL. A listed kit is useful compatibility evidence for the tested configuration; an unlisted kit is not, by itself, proof of incompatibility.
- Check BIOS requirements and installation guidance. Confirm the installed BIOS version meets any stated prerequisite, and install modules in the slots the manual recommends for the chosen configuration.
Motherboard maximum, CPU maximum, and usable RAM are different
The board’s published maximum describes a supported hardware capacity under its stated conditions. The CPU may impose a separate memory limit, while the operating system may report less usable memory than is physically installed. Keep these figures distinct when diagnosing a system: a displayed usable amount does not, on its own, identify the motherboard’s maximum.
For context, an older ASUS P8C WS manual says DIMM support depends on the installed CPU and includes a note that 32-bit Windows may use a maximum of 3 GB in that documented context: ASUS P8C WS manual. This is a legacy, model-specific note—not a current universal Windows limit.
Rank #2
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Maximum capacity is not memory speed
A system can support a kit’s total capacity yet run it below the speed printed on its packaging. The advertised profile may be faster than the memory’s default SPD setting, and actual operation depends on the CPU specifications, motherboard, installed slots and modules, and BIOS configuration. Intel’s guidance on matching RAM frequency discusses these checks: Intel: Configure RAM frequency to match processor specifications.

If memory runs slower than expected, check the default SPD speed, the BIOS or UEFI memory settings, the manual’s slot order, CPU limits, and the QVL for the exact kit and population. Changing speed settings does not increase the motherboard’s supported capacity.

Example: why the exact board matters
MSI’s specification page for the B450M-A PRO MAX II lists two DDR4 slots and a 64 GB maximum, with a BIOS requirement for that support. Those details apply to that named model; they do not establish a capacity for every B450 motherboard.

Once you know the exact motherboard and CPU, compare the kit against the configuration you intend to install:
Rank #4
- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
- Dynamic RGB Lighting: Individually addressable RGB lighting delivers vibrant effects through a sleek, understated panoramic diffuser
- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Onboard voltage regulation for reliable power at high frequencies
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
- Total capacity and capacity per module
- Memory generation and type supported by both the board and CPU
- Number of modules, slots used, and recommended slot placement
- Supported speed for that CPU and module population
- Whether the kit’s exact part number appears on the board’s QVL
- Any BIOS prerequisite stated by the motherboard maker
Choose a kit only after those checks. Compatibility is specific to the combination of board, processor, memory type, capacity, and configuration; no single desktop RAM kit is suitable for every motherboard.
