For a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 workstation, choose up to 128GB of memory if your work depends on large local AI models, graphics, or other data-heavy workloads that benefit from a large shared memory pool. Pick less only after checking the needs of your actual applications; there is no established universal minimum. Choose SSD capacity separately, based on the operating system, apps, models, datasets, and project files you intend to keep locally. System configurations and upgrade options vary by manufacturer and SKU.
How much memory does a Ryzen AI Max+ workstation support?
AMD lists the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with a 256-bit LPDDR5x memory interface, LPDDR5x-8000 speed, and a maximum of 128GB. These are processor-platform specifications, not a guarantee that every workstation using the chip is sold with every capacity.

The processor family uses shared memory for CPU, integrated graphics, and NPU workloads. AMD says that up to 96GB of a 128GB unified-memory configuration can be available for graphics; this describes an allocation capability, not a fixed reservation or a guarantee that applications will have that amount available. Choose memory for the workload you run at once
Development, office, and general creator work
Base the capacity on the applications, project sizes, and number of tasks you expect to keep active together. The available manufacturer specifications do not establish a universal minimum for these workloads, so avoid treating a particular lower capacity as sufficient for every user.

Local AI and graphics-heavy work
A larger shared pool can give applications room for larger model or graphics workloads. Capacity alone does not establish that a particular model will run acceptably: quantization, context length, software support, memory allocation, and performance requirements also matter. Check the requirements and supported GPU or NPU path of the software you plan to use.
Check whether the memory can be changed
Do not assume that a workstation takes standard desktop DIMMs or that its memory is upgradeable. AMD specifies LPDDR5x for the processor, while MSI lists LPDDR5X and a 128GB maximum for its PRO MAX EDGE AI+ platform. The cited product and store specifications do not establish upgradeability across all models. Confirm the exact system’s supported configurations and whether its memory is soldered before ordering.

Choose SSD capacity separately from RAM
Memory is working space for active tasks; SSD storage holds the operating system, applications, local model files, datasets, caches, media, and project files. Estimate what needs to stay installed and leave practical headroom, particularly if you keep several large models or datasets locally. The available specifications do not establish a workload-based storage minimum, so 2TB should be treated as an example configuration rather than a universal target.
AMD lists its Ryzen AI Halo developer platform with a 2TB M.2 SSD, 128GB LPDDR5x-8000 memory, and 256GB/s memory bandwidth. Those figures describe that named developer platform, not every Ryzen AI Max+ workstation. See AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo specifications.

Can you add another SSD?
That depends on the system, not just the processor. MSI lists two M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD slots for the PRO MAX EDGE AI+ platform, and its US store listed one 11M-006US configuration with a Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 128GB memory, and 2TB M.2 NVMe storage when accessed on October 4, 2026. These are MSI-specific examples; they do not establish that another model has a free slot or the same drive support. Consult the MSI PRO MAX EDGE AI+ specification and US store listing for the named product, then verify the exact SKU before buying.
Before adding a drive, confirm the number of unoccupied slots, supported M.2 dimensions and interface, user-installation terms, and warranty conditions for your specific system. A second listed slot does not by itself mean that it is empty, accessible, or compatible with any M.2 SSD.
