If you keep lots of games, photos, videos or offline downloads on your phone, look for 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage when the price difference is reasonable. These are practical buying recommendations—not Android requirements or a guarantee of speed. The processor, software, storage speed and the manufacturer’s memory management matter too.
Is 4GB RAM and 128GB storage enough for a 5G phone?
It can be enough for calls, messaging, web browsing, streaming and modest app use, especially if you do not keep many large files on the phone. But 4GB leaves less room for apps to remain open while you switch between them. For a general-purpose phone, 6GB is the safer RAM target; consider 4GB only if the phone’s software and price make that compromise worthwhile.

With 128GB of advertised storage, remember that the full amount is not available for your files: the operating system and preinstalled software use space. For example, Samsung’s regional Galaxy A16 5G listings report about 108–109GB available on 128GB variants. The usable amount varies by phone and configuration.
Choose a configuration for how you use your phone

Why Android minimums are not buying targets
Google describes Android (Go edition) as “a mobile operating system built for entry-level smartphones with less RAM than standard in higher-end devices.” Its page lists 2GB as the minimum RAM for Android 13 Go edition. That figure is specific to the Go edition and Android version; it does not establish how much RAM a particular buyer needs for comfortable everyday use. Google’s Android (Go edition) overview
Android platform compatibility documents also specify technical requirements, including available application-private-data storage and memory available to the kernel and userspace. Check the exact model and storage variant before buying
A phone-family name alone does not tell you how much memory a particular unit has. Samsung’s Galaxy A16 5G pages show market variants with 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The cited Brazil, India and Singapore listings report roughly 108–109GB available on their 128GB variants. This is a useful reminder to check the local listing and exact model number rather than relying on a review or listing from another country.

Do not count virtual RAM as physical RAM
Some listings promote a combined figure that includes physical RAM and virtual memory. Do not treat that headline total as equivalent to the same amount of physical RAM. The cited sources do not quantify the performance benefit of virtual RAM, so compare the physical RAM figures shown for the exact variant.

When a microSD card helps—and when it does not
A memory card can add room for media on phones that support one, but it is not automatically a substitute for internal storage. Support, maximum capacity, SIM-tray layout and what can be stored on the card depend on the exact phone.
For example, Motorola’s 2025 moto g user guide says the phone supports an optional microSD card up to 128GB for portable media storage such as photos, videos and music, and explicitly says apps cannot be stored on it. A quick checklist for comparing budget 5G phones
- Confirm the exact local variant. Check the RAM and internal storage for the country and model number you intend to buy; configurations can differ by market.
- Look for usable storage. Compare the available space reported for the exact model, not just its advertised capacity.
- Compare physical RAM. Separate it from any virtual-memory figure in the phone’s marketing.
- Verify expansion details. Confirm whether the phone has a microSD slot, the supported capacity, whether the tray is shared with a SIM, and whether apps can use the card.
- Match capacity to your habits. Games, frequent app switching, offline video and locally saved camera files make extra headroom more useful.
- Check software support. Verify the manufacturer’s current update policy for the exact model; RAM alone cannot make an older or poorly supported phone a better long-term choice.
