The captain does not have special authority under the Laws of the Game, and neither role outranks the referee during a match.
What does the captain do?
Each team must have an identifiable captain on the field wearing an armband. The captain remains a player, not a manager or an assistant referee. IFAB’s Laws of the Game 2025/26, Law 3 puts the formal responsibility this way: “The team captain has no special status or privileges but has a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of the team.”

In practice, captains often encourage teammates, set an example and help communication between players and staff. Those are common leadership duties, not powers granted by the Laws. The captain’s influence therefore varies with the player and the team’s culture.

The coach is a team official who guides the team’s technical work and player development. That can include preparing players, developing tactics and directing coaching work. FIFA’s coach-development resources describe training and education intended to help coaches guide talent.
#1 Best Overall
A coach’s authority is about the team’s preparation and play, not refereeing decisions. Coaches and other team officials remain subject to the Laws and must behave responsibly.
How do their roles compare?
| Question | Captain | Coach |
|---|---|---|
| Who is it? | A player on the field, identified by an armband. | A team official. |
| Main contribution | Peer leadership and responsibility for team behaviour. | Technical guidance and player development. |
| Authority under the Laws | No special status or privileges; cannot overrule the referee. | Can direct coaching work but cannot control refereeing decisions. |
| Relationship with the referee | May have a designated role in certain referee interactions if the competition adopts the relevant guidance. | Is a team official, not the on-field representative described by the captain provisions. |
Who has the final say during a match?
The referee has authority to enforce the Laws of the Game. Under IFAB Law 5, that authority also includes taking action when team officials fail to behave responsibly. The captain can lead teammates and the coach can direct the team, but neither can replace the referee’s match authority.

Can only the captain speak to the referee?
Not as a universal rule. IFAB approved updated “Only the captain” guidance for inclusion in the 2025/26 Laws, effective 1 July 2025, but competitions can choose whether to apply it in specified situations. Check the competition’s rules before assuming the guidance applies. Where it is adopted, it governs particular referee interactions; it does not give the captain general authority over the referee. See IFAB’s “Only the captain” guidelines.
