For most people buying a 15.6-inch laptop, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD make a flexible general-purpose starting point. If you mostly browse, stream, and work in cloud apps, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage can be enough. Gaming, creative projects, and large collections of files may call for more.
The screen size does not determine these capacities. Choose RAM for the applications you run at the same time, and storage for the operating system, apps, and files you keep on the laptop.

What RAM and storage do—and why they are different
RAM is the laptop’s short-term working memory for open applications and active tasks. More RAM can help when you keep many tabs or programs open, or use memory-intensive software. Storage is the longer-term space for Windows, applications, games, photos, videos, and other files. An SSD is the usual internal storage type in current laptops.

The processor also matters, and demanding graphics work or gaming may depend heavily on the GPU. Microsoft and HP both advise considering those components alongside memory and storage in their buying guidance (Microsoft Windows laptop buying guide; HP laptop specifications guidance).

Choose a configuration for your workload
| Use | RAM target | Internal storage target | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browsing, email, documents, and streaming | 8 GB is workable; 16 GB allows more multitasking room | 256 GB SSD for cloud-first use; 512 GB for more local files | Microsoft recommends 8–16 GB of RAM generally. Its buying guide suggests 128–256 GB for cloud-oriented users and 512 GB–1 TB for people keeping many files locally (Microsoft). |
| School and everyday multitasking | 8–16 GB; prefer 16 GB when budget and available configuration allow | 512 GB SSD is a useful default | HP lists 8–16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD for students and multitasking in its use-case guidance (HP). |
| Photo and video editing or creative projects | At least 16 GB is a reasonable starting point; heavier projects may need more | 512 GB–1 TB or more, depending on project libraries | Microsoft says editing may call for closer to 16 GB or more, and large files increase storage needs. Check the requirements for the specific software and projects (Microsoft Support). |
| Gaming | 16 GB is a common starting point; Microsoft lists 16–64 GB for gaming laptops | 512 GB–2 TB or more, depending on the game library | Game requirements and file sizes vary. Check published requirements for the games you play and count how many you want installed at once. |
| Professional or high-performance work | Consider 32 GB or more when the applications or workflow justify it | 1 TB or more for large local working sets | HP’s 2026 guidance recommends 32 GB+ and 1 TB+ for professional and AI workloads; that is a use-case-specific recommendation, not a universal minimum (HP). |
Is 8 GB of RAM enough for a 15.6-inch laptop?
It can be enough for basic browsing, email, documents, streaming, and cloud-first use, especially if you do not keep many demanding apps open together. It offers less headroom for heavy multitasking or creative applications. Microsoft’s Windows laptop buying guide recommends 8–16 GB generally, while its memory guidance says 8 GB is recommended for longer-term use and 16 GB or more can suit photo or video editing and high-performance projects (Microsoft; Microsoft Support).
Do not treat Windows 11’s minimum system requirement as a comfortable buying target: Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage for eligibility, not as a recommendation for a general-purpose laptop (Windows 11 system requirements).

How much SSD storage should you get?
Start with how much you expect to keep offline. Cloud documents and streaming media use less internal space than downloaded videos, a large photo library, installed games, or active editing projects. Microsoft’s buying guide suggests 128–256 GB for cloud-oriented use and 512 GB–1 TB for people saving many photos, videos, and documents locally (Microsoft).

- 512 GB: a practical default for everyday use with a moderate set of local files and apps.
- 1 TB or more: consider it for large game libraries, creative project files, or substantial local archives.
A portable external SSD can supplement internal storage for archives, but it does not increase the laptop’s built-in capacity. Files and applications you need available away from the drive still require enough internal space.

Check upgradeability before you buy
RAM and storage upgrade options vary by exact laptop model. Some configurations may not allow a straightforward RAM upgrade, and supported memory modules, drive types, and maximum capacities are model-specific. Before buying a laptop—or parts for one—check the manufacturer’s specification page, support page, or manual for the precise model number. Microsoft also recommends checking the device documentation for upgrade details (Microsoft Support).
If you expect to keep the laptop for years, do not assume you can add RAM later. Confirm the upgrade path before choosing a lower-capacity configuration.
Quick Recap
Make the final choice
- List your regular tasks. Separate light browsing and documents from gaming, editing, or specialized professional applications.
- Estimate what stays local. Include applications, games, active projects, and files you want accessible without an internet connection.
- Check software requirements. Use the published requirements for the applications and games you actually use; they may call for more RAM or storage than a general recommendation.
- Verify the exact laptop configuration. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for installed RAM, SSD capacity, and whether either can be upgraded.
- Balance the whole system. For demanding work, assess the processor and GPU as well as RAM and storage; capacity alone cannot make an underpowered system suitable.
