For a basic local AI study-assistant setup, 16GB of RAM is a sensible starting point—not a guarantee that every model or study workflow will run well. Official guidance from LM Studio and AnythingLLM both points to 16GB for basic use. Storage has no universal target: it depends chiefly on the local model files you download, so choose the software and model before deciding how much space you need.
How much RAM should you plan for?
Use 16GB of system RAM as a practical baseline for a basic local setup. LM Studio recommends at least 16GB on Windows and 16GB or more on Apple Silicon; AnythingLLM lists 16GB for a basic configuration. These are vendor recommendations, not a promise that every model, context length, or combination of apps will fit comfortably. See LM Studio’s system requirements and AnythingLLM’s system requirements.

When 8GB may be enough
LM Studio says some Macs with 8GB of memory may work with smaller models and modest context sizes. Treat that as a limited-use possibility, not a general recommendation for longer study sessions or large document collections. An 8GB machine has less room for model operation alongside the operating system and other open applications.

Why model and context size matter
When a local model runs, its weights and other parameters occupy memory. The computer also needs memory for the operating system, the assistant itself, and any other applications in use. A larger model or a larger context—the material the model can consider at once—can make a nominal RAM figure less adequate. LM Studio explains model loading and setup in its Get started with LM Studio guide. Select the intended model and context settings before treating a computer’s installed RAM as available to the assistant.

How much storage does a local model need?
There is no single storage requirement that applies to all local AI study assistants. AnythingLLM says the space needed varies with the size of the local LLM stored on the computer. Check the actual download size for the model and version you intend to use, then leave additional room for study documents and application data. The reviewed requirements do not quantify those extra files, so a universal storage number would be misleading.
Model files are stored on disk and loaded into memory when used; storage capacity and RAM are related to the same model but solve different problems. A computer can have enough disk space for a download yet lack the memory to run that model suitably.

Do you need a dedicated GPU?
GPU guidance depends on the application and operating system, and it is not interchangeable with system-RAM guidance. On Windows, LM Studio recommends 4GB of dedicated VRAM. AnythingLLM describes 8–12GB or more of VRAM as useful and says GPU support can accelerate local inference. These are different vendor recommendations, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of a particular speed. Check the requirements for the runtime you plan to use; AnythingLLM’s Windows installation guidance covers its Windows setup.

- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
What changes if you use a hosted model?
If the assistant connects to a hosted model instead of running one locally, the computer does not need to store that model or perform its inference. AnythingLLM describes its client as lightweight in this arrangement, which requires an API key. This shifts model storage and computation away from the PC; it does not make the same hardware assumptions as local inference. The cited documentation does not establish a general privacy or answer-quality advantage for either approach.
Choose a computer by the workload, not RAM alone
Before buying or upgrading, check these details for the exact assistant, runtime, and model you plan to use:
Rank #4
- Capacity – Single Module 16GB Speed up to 3200MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered 260-Pin 1.2V SODIMM.
- Specs – PCB Color (Green or Black, or Blue) and Rank (1Rx8 or 2Rx8) may vary depending on production batch. Performance and quality remain consistent across all Timetec products. 3200MHz Memory RAM can automatically downclock to 2933MHz or 2666MHz if system specification only supports 2933MHz or 2666MHz.
- Compatibility – Designed for selected DDR4 Laptop, Notebook, Mini PCs, and All-In-One systems(AIO) that support 260-Pin SODIMM memory. NOT compatible with Desktop DIMM slots.
- Installation – Plug-and-Play Upgrade, Quick and Easy to Install, no expertise required (please refer to your system's manual for guidelines).
- Warranty – All Timetec products are high-quality and rigorously tested to meet stringent standards. Backed by Timetec Limited Lifetime Warranty and professional technical support based in the United States.
- Available system memory: compare installed RAM or unified memory with the software’s guidance, allowing for the operating system and other running apps.
- Model and context settings: identify the model and the context size needed for the study materials you want it to handle.
- Storage: check the model’s actual download size and leave room for documents and app data.
- Graphics requirements: check that runtime’s own VRAM guidance rather than applying another product’s recommendation.
- Local or hosted inference: decide whether the computer will store and run the model or connect to a provider using an API key.
If your current computer has less than 16GB, first check whether it can be upgraded and whether the intended software and model support the machine. A RAM upgrade is useful only when the computer is upgradeable and memory is the constraint; it does not create more storage or guarantee acceptable performance.

What these recommendations do—and do not—tell you
The figures above are product-vendor configuration recommendations, not results from a general performance study. The requirements pages were accessed on October 3, 2026, and may change as software and models are updated. Because the question does not specify an assistant, model, quantization, context length, document collection, or speed target, the evidence cannot establish one exact PC configuration or fixed storage capacity for every student.
