The commonly cited specification is a maximum DC output of 600 watts per power supply for the large-pedestal system, with two supplies available for redundancy or current sharing. That is the capacity of the power supplies, not the number of watts the complete server normally takes from an outlet.
To find what a particular AlphaServer 2100 uses, measure its AC input with a suitably rated plug-in power meter. Record the settled idle reading, repeat it during a defined workload, and use the meter’s accumulated kilowatt-hours for longer energy estimates. If the server has two power cords, include both inputs.

What the published AlphaServer 2100 power figures actually mean
The most specific figure for the large-pedestal AlphaServer 2100 appears in the 1994 Digital Technical Journal system-specifications table: 600 W maximum DC power output per supply. The same table indicates that two supplies can be installed in redundant or current-shared mode. You can read the specification in the archived journal PDF at Digital Technical Journal, “AlphaServer Multiprocessing Systems” (1994).

“Maximum DC output” describes how much usable direct-current power a supply is designed to deliver to the computer’s internal loads. It does not say that the server draws 600 W from the wall, that it draws 1,200 W with two supplies, or that either number is a normal idle or operating value. AC input includes conversion losses, and the actual load depends on the installed hardware and its operating state.

The Digital Equipment AlphaServer 2000 Owner’s Guide, EK–400MP–OP. A01 (first printing October 1994), covers one- and two-supply arrangements in the family. Its 400 W maximum combined-output description belongs to that guide’s stated configuration context; it should not be substituted for the 600 W-per-supply entry in the technical-journal table.
A November 1996 Digital Systems and Options Catalog includes AlphaServer 2100A cabinet and rack information and heat-dissipation figures. Those entries are configuration-specific and are not a measured, all-purpose consumption number for an AlphaServer 2100.
Why two AlphaServer 2100s can draw different amounts
Hardware configuration
Processor modules, memory capacity, internal disks, removable media, expansion cards, and other installed options all change the electrical load. The available documentation identifies these configuration variables but does not provide a validated idle-versus-loaded watt table for each combination. A small-pedestal, large-pedestal, rackmount, and cabinet installation should therefore be treated as a different measurement subject, not as interchangeable examples.

One supply versus two
A two-supply machine may use redundant operation, in which one supply can support the system if the other fails, or current-shared operation, in which both contribute to the load. The presence of two 600 W-capable supplies does not imply a 1,200 W wall draw. Conversely, a redundant arrangement can still place some load on both input cords, so measuring only one cord can under-report the server’s total input.

- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Idle, startup, and workload state
Startup can briefly differ from settled idle because drives spin up and the system initializes. A compiler run, database activity, disk-intensive job, or other sustained workload can produce a different reading again. A number without the machine’s state and workload is not a useful comparison.
What your measurement includes
Decide whether the measurement boundary is the server alone or the server plus external disk enclosures, a console terminal, a monitor, or other peripherals. Record that choice. Otherwise two apparently comparable readings may be measuring different equipment.
How to measure an AlphaServer 2100 at the wall
The safest practical method is an external plug-in AC watt meter (also called an electricity-usage monitor) rated for the receptacle’s voltage, plug type, and the expected current. This is an observational measurement, not a chassis service procedure.

- Use a properly grounded receptacle. The owner guide states: "Plug this equipment into a properly grounded power receptacle."
- Do not defeat the earth connection, open a power supply, or probe mains wiring.
- Do not place a handheld multimeter in series with live AC conductors.
- Check that the meter is rated for the outlet voltage, plug arrangement, and load. If two cords are present, make sure your method measures both without exceeding any device rating.
Step-by-step procedure
- Document the exact system. Identify the form factor (large pedestal, small pedestal, rackmount, or cabinet), processor modules, memory, drives, expansion cards, and the number and mode of power supplies. Photograph the rear panel or transcribe the configuration so the result can be reproduced.
- Choose the measurement point. A plug-in meter can measure one cord at a time. For a one-cord system, connect the meter between the grounded wall receptacle and the server cord. For a two-cord system, use equipment specifically rated to measure both inputs together, or measure each cord separately and add the readings. Do not assume one cord represents the total.
- Start with a known boundary. Decide whether external storage, a monitor, console equipment, or other accessories are included. Disconnect or separately meter anything that is outside the server-only result.
- Record settled idle watts. Power up normally and wait until startup activity has finished and the reading is stable. Note the settling time, operating system state, and whether drives or attached devices are active. Record the instantaneous watts shown by the meter.
- Run a defined workload. Repeat the measurement while the machine performs a named, repeatable task. State what ran, for how long, and whether storage or network activity was involved. A brief peak and a sustained workload are different observations.
- Measure energy over time when needed. Reset or note the meter’s accumulated kWh counter, operate the server for a stated interval, then record the ending value. The difference is the energy used during that interval by everything connected within the measurement boundary.
- Preserve the conditions with the result. Include date, line voltage if the meter reports it, ambient conditions when relevant, peripherals, supply arrangement, and workload. These details matter more than an unexplained single watt number.
Watts versus kilowatt-hours
Watts (W) describe power at a moment or during a defined operating state. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe accumulated energy over time. For example, if a meter records 3.6 kWh during a 12-hour observation, the interval’s average power is 300 W: 3.6 kWh multiplied by 1,000 and divided by 12 hours. That average is valid only for the equipment and workload included in that interval.

You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Do not take a short startup peak, multiply it by 24 hours, and label the result a daily average. If the machine alternates between idle and busy periods, measure a representative schedule or leave the kWh interval intact and describe what happened during it.
How to report a useful AlphaServer 2100 measurement
A reproducible report should answer five questions: which machine, which operating state, what was measured, for how long, and what equipment was included. This format keeps the 600 W supply-capacity specification from being mistaken for a consumption result.
Configuration: form factor, processor modules, memory, drives, expansion cards, supplies and supply mode
Meter: make/model, AC rating and measurement range
Measurement point: server cords only, or server plus specifically listed equipment
Settled idle: watts after the stated startup-settling period
Workload: task description, duration and observed watts
Energy: kilowatt-hours over the stated interval
Line voltage: meter reading, if available
Date and conditions: date, ambient conditions and notable peripheral activity
If two inputs were measured independently, list each cord’s reading and the arithmetic used to obtain the combined value. If the meter cannot display true power factor or fluctuating loads accurately, identify the meter’s limitation rather than presenting extra precision.
Comparing measurements without misleading yourself
There is no evidence-based idle-versus-loaded benchmark table for a defined AlphaServer 2100 configuration. You can still make valid comparisons when every reading uses the same axes:

| Comparison axis | Keep constant or state explicitly |
|---|---|
| Server form and configuration | Pedestal, rack, or cabinet form; processor count; memory; storage; expansion options |
| Supply arrangement | Single, redundant, or current-shared operation; number of AC cords measured |
| Operating state | Settled idle, startup, or a named workload with duration |
| Measurement boundary | Server alone versus server plus external storage, console, monitor, or other peripherals |
| Metric and interval | Instantaneous watts versus accumulated kWh over a stated period |
Comparing a 2100 pedestal’s settled-idle watts with a 2100A cabinet’s catalog heat figure, or comparing one-cord input with two-cord input, produces a number but not a meaningful engineering comparison.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling 600 W the server’s typical consumption
Why it fails: 600 W is maximum DC output capacity per supply. Correction: label it as a supply specification and obtain wall input with a meter.
Doubling the number because two supplies are installed
Why it fails: redundant supplies are not automatically operating at their maximum output, and current sharing depends on the actual load. Correction: measure both AC cords or use a device rated to measure their combined input.

Ignoring attached equipment
Why it fails: external disks, terminals, and displays can add their own load. Correction: define the boundary and list every included device.
Reporting a peak as an average
Why it fails: startup and short workload peaks do not represent a full day. Correction: collect kWh over a stated interval or report separate idle and workload readings.
Bottom line for an AlphaServer 2100 owner
The defensible published specification is 600 W maximum DC output per supply for the large-pedestal AlphaServer 2100, with two supplies possible. It is not a typical wall-consumption figure. Because processor, memory, storage, options, supply mode, peripherals, and workload all matter—and no authoritative idle/load wall measurements were found for a defined configuration—the only reliable answer for your machine comes from measuring both AC inputs at the wall and documenting the conditions.
