For generally healthy adults, there is no established daily EPA/DHA dose for heart health. U.S. guidance focuses on eating seafood—typically one to two servings each week, preferably fatty fish—as part of a healthy eating pattern. Advice differs for people with coronary heart disease or high triglycerides, and those clinical doses are not general fish-oil supplement targets.
What omega-3 amount is recommended for a generally healthy adult?
U.S. guidance does not set a recommended daily amount of EPA and DHA for heart health in the general adult population. Instead, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating fish regularly: its consumer guidance describes one to two seafood servings per week, while its advisory recommends at least two fish servings weekly, preferably fatty fish. See the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) consumer fact sheet and the AHA seafood advisory.

That is a food-based recommendation, not a prescription to take a daily capsule. The likely dietary benefit also depends on the overall eating pattern, including whether seafood replaces less healthy foods.
How ALA differs from EPA and DHA
“Omega-3” refers to several fatty acids, and their intake figures are not interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- ALWAYS FRESH, NEVER FISHY: Say goodbye to fishy aftertaste, burps, and lingering odor. Our Triple Strength Omega-3 Fish Oil undergoes a 10-step molecular distillation and purification process designed to deliver a high-potency EPA and DHA that’s freshness-verified in every softgel.*
- WHAT’S INSIDE – JUST ONE A DAY: Each pescatarian-friendly softgel delivers 1250mg of fish oil, providing a minimum of 1040mg of Omega-3 fatty acids in the preferred triglyceride form—with 690mg EPA and 260mg DHA per capsule. This powerful formula allows you to meet your daily omega-3 needs with just one softgel per day, eliminating the need for multiple doses or megacaps.*
- SUSTAINABLY SOURCED FROM ALASKA POLLOCK: We source exclusively from wild-caught Alaska Pollock harvested in the cold, pristine waters of the Bering Sea. Our oil is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified sustainable and IFOS 5-Star rated, guaranteeing purity, freshness, traceability, and eco-responsibility at every step of the supply chain.*
- OMEGA-3 POWERHOUSE FOR TOTAL BODY WELLNESS*: Omega-3 fatty acids—especially EPA and DHA—are clinically shown to support cardiovascular health, joint support, and eye health.* With 950mg EPA + DHA content per softgel, Sports Research delivers one of the most concentrated and effective omega-3 products available.*
- THE SPORTS RESEARCH DIFFERENCE: Manufactured in the USA in a cGMP-compliant facility, our Omega-3 Fish Oil is Non-GMO tested, pescatarian-friendly, gluten-free, hexane-free, and third-party tested for heavy metals, oxidation, and active potency. Clean, potent, and traceable—because you deserve supplements that work as hard as you do.*
- ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is found mainly in plant foods and oils. The adult adequate intake values reported by NIH ODS are 1.6 g per day for men and 1.1 g per day for women. These are ALA amounts—not EPA/DHA targets for heart health.
- EPA and DHA are long-chain omega-3s found in fatty fish and seafood, as well as fish-oil and some algal-oil supplements. NIH ODS says recommended amounts for EPA and DHA have not been established for the general population.
The body converts only small amounts of ALA to EPA and then DHA. For the intake distinctions and figures, see the NIH ODS health professional fact sheet.
What the seafood recommendation means in practice
AHA guidance is expressed as weekly servings, not as a required daily supplement dose. Its advisory defines a serving as 3.5 oz and notes that one 4 oz serving of fatty fish such as salmon per week can provide about 250 mg per day of long-chain omega-3 on average. That figure is an average intake equivalence; it is not a prescribed daily dose.

Choose seafood you enjoy and can eat regularly. Fatty fish is preferred in the AHA recommendation, but the guidance is about a dietary pattern rather than meeting a capsule target. The AHA advisory explains the serving sizes and average equivalence: Fish and seafood in a healthy dietary pattern.

| Situation | Guidance or treatment amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Generally healthy adult | No established general daily EPA/DHA amount | Follow food-based seafood guidance; this is not a general supplement prescription. (NIH ODS) |
| Existing coronary heart disease | Approximately 1 g/day EPA plus DHA | AHA guidance summarized by NIH ODS says this amount is preferably obtained from oily fish; supplements may be considered under a health-care provider’s direction. It applies to this clinical group, not everyone. (NIH ODS) |
| High triglycerides requiring treatment | 4 g/day prescription omega-3 | The AHA’s 2019 advisory says prescription EPA-only or EPA-plus-DHA therapy can lower triglycerides by approximately 20–30%. This is treatment under medical care, not an over-the-counter fish-oil target. (AHA) |
The 4 g/day prescription treatment is not equivalent to taking 4 g of ordinary fish-oil capsules: products differ in how much EPA and DHA they contain, and the advisory concerns prescription formulations and clinical care. See the AHA science advisory on omega-3s for hypertriglyceridemia.

Do omega-3 supplements prevent heart disease?
The evidence for preventing cardiovascular events is mixed and depends on the formulation, population, comparison treatment, and outcome measured. NIH ODS summarizes a high-dose EPA-only trial with a positive result and a high-dose EPA-plus-DHA trial that did not show significant cardiovascular benefit. These findings do not establish that routine fish-oil supplements prevent heart disease.
The FDA-qualified claim reproduced by NIH ODS is carefully limited: “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” Read the qualification as part of the claim; it is not proof that omega-3 prevents heart disease. The trial context and claim are summarized in the NIH ODS health professional fact sheet.

If you use a supplement, check the EPA and DHA—not just “fish oil”
For someone who does not eat oily fish, an EPA/DHA supplement may be an option to discuss, but it is not required for every healthy adult. One expert quoted in an AHA News explainer called supplements “a completely viable option for people who don’t eat oily fish”; that comment is not a universal AHA recommendation. See the AHA News explainer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Read the label for the amount of EPA and DHA per serving. The total milligrams of “fish oil” are not the same as the EPA+DHA amount.
- Do not use prescription triglyceride-treatment doses as a reason to take high-dose over-the-counter products.
- Discuss supplements with a health-care provider if you take regular medication or have a cardiovascular condition.
NIH ODS reports that the FDA recommends no more than 5 g per day of combined EPA and DHA from dietary supplements. This is an upper limit, not a target or an assurance that unsupervised high-dose use is appropriate. The NIH ODS consumer fact sheet covers this limit.

Safety considerations, especially at high doses
Commonly reported supplement effects are usually mild and can include unpleasant taste, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, headache, and odoriferous sweat. Supplements can also interact with medicines, so people taking regular medication should discuss use with a health-care provider.
There is a specific high-dose concern: two large trials found a slight increase in atrial fibrillation among people with cardiovascular disease or high cardiovascular risk taking 4 g per day for several years. That finding does not establish the same risk for every dose or person, but it is another reason not to treat a prescription-level amount as routine self-care. NIH ODS summarizes the safety information in its health professional fact sheet.
