How to Choose Canned Fish: Omega-3s, Sodium, and Sustainability

To choose canned fish, compare the actual Nutrition Facts serving and sodium, then check the species, catch origin, fishing method, and any certification. No species or front-of-package claim guarantees the same omega-3 content or sustainability across every product.

Start with the label and the portion you will eat

Nutrition Facts values apply to the serving size shown on the can, not automatically to the whole container. Check both the serving size and servings per package, then adjust the numbers if you eat more or less than one serving. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains that % Daily Value (%DV) shows how much a nutrient in one serving contributes to a daily diet: FDA guidance on Daily Value.

Use sodium %DV as a quick comparison

The FDA sodium Daily Value is 2,300 milligrams per day. As a general label-reading guide, 5% DV or less is low and 20% DV or more is high. These are broad comparison cues, not individualized medical targets. Compare cans using equivalent serving sizes; if one serving is smaller, its sodium figure may look lower even when the amount per equal portion is not.

If you rinse a sodium-containing canned food such as tuna, the FDA says rinsing removes some sodium. It does not make the food sodium-free, and the label’s listed amount is not a post-rinsing measurement. See FDA: Sodium in Your Diet.

What canned fish provides omega-3s?

Fish can provide the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, and FDA/EPA fish advice encourages variety. But a species name alone is not enough to establish how much DHA and EPA a particular can contains. The available agency guidance does not provide a directly comparable set of quantities for canned salmon, tuna, and sardines using the same serving size and preparation, so a universal milligram figure or precise ranking would be misleading.

For a specific product, use its package information when omega-3 content is listed, or consult a nutrient database that matches the species, portion, and preparation. For advice about fish choices and mercury—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or choosing fish for a child—use the current FDA/EPA advice about eating fish and shellfish rather than applying a generic canned-tuna allowance.

Check sourcing at the fishery level

Environmental guidance depends on more than whether a can says tuna, sardines, or another species. Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch recommendations can vary by species, catch area, fishing method, and fishery. Start with the relevant current guide and look for the origin and gear information needed to match the product to a recommendation.

For tuna, identify the method and origin

Seafood Watch’s sustainable tuna buying guide separates advice for canned or pouched tuna by sourcing details. It identifies methods such as pole-and-line, troll, and FAD-free for particular origins; those terms are not blanket ratings for every fishery using them. Match the can’s stated information to the guide instead of treating all tuna as interchangeable. Seafood Watch also cautions: “Dolphin-safe does not mean the tuna is environmentally sustainable.”

For sardines, anchovies, and herring, seek harvest details

The sardine, anchovy, and herring guide advises checking harvest information or certification. It includes some MSC-certified options, but certification does not make every product in a category equivalent: the recommendation remains tied to the particular product and fishery. Do not infer that a can is certified unless its current label or certification record confirms it.

Do not mistake processing country for catch origin

For processed seafood, a “Product of” country statement may identify where the fish was processed rather than where it was caught. Look for more specific sourcing information on the package or check the fishery-specific guide. The March 2026 Seafood Watch National Seafood Guide is one starting point; recommendations are updated periodically, so consult the current edition when making a decision.

A practical comparison checklist

When comparing two cans, assess the same dimensions rather than relying on a single front-label claim:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Serving basis: serving size, servings per package, and the portion you expect to eat.
  • Sodium: milligrams and %DV for equivalent portions.
  • Fish identity: species stated on the label.
  • Origin and method: catch area and fishing method, when provided.
  • Sourcing evidence: a certification or other claim that can be checked against the relevant current fishery guidance.
  • Ingredients and packing liquid: compare these according to your preferences, not as a substitute for checking nutrition or sourcing.

Nutrition values belong to the individual product, while sustainability advice is fishery-specific. If origin or method is missing, the package alone may not provide enough detail to match it confidently to a recommendation.

Other label detail: fish with bones

Canned seafood with edible bones, including some salmon and sardines, can contribute calcium. The amount depends on the product and serving, so check its Nutrition Facts label. The FDA’s Vitamins and Minerals Chart identifies canned seafood with bones as a calcium source.
