Choose an NBN plan for the things your household does at the same time, especially during the evening—not simply for the number of people or devices in the home. Start by checking concurrent streaming, gaming, video calls and uploads, then compare the available plans’ download and upload speeds, busy-period performance, address eligibility and price. A plan’s advertised tier is not a guarantee of the speed every device will receive.

Start with what happens during the evening peak

Think about a typical busy evening, particularly between 7 pm and 11 pm. Ask: how many people will be online together, what devices will they use, and what will they be doing? NBN recommends considering this period because internet traffic is often at its peak then. Its household speed-selection guidance uses activity examples to help frame the decision.

Make a short inventory of simultaneous activity rather than adding every device in the house. For example, a television streaming video, a laptop on a work call, a game download and a phone backing up photos at once create a different demand from those same devices sitting idle. NBN says connected devices share the plan’s bandwidth, and that multiple simultaneous streams, games or large uploads can affect performance. Its connected-device guidance cites OMDIA’s 2023 estimate of around 25 connected devices per household globally among fixed-broadband households. That is a global figure, not an Australian household average, and it does not mean every device is using substantial bandwidth at once.

  • Note the number of people likely to be online together at the busiest time.
  • List demanding concurrent activities: high-definition or 4K streaming, online gaming, video calls, large downloads, uploads and cloud backups.
  • Include work or study requirements, such as several simultaneous video calls or sending large files.
  • Think about the devices that will do those activities and whether they connect by Wi-Fi or cable.

This inventory is a practical guide, not a precise bandwidth calculator. NBN’s examples describe activity and plan capabilities; they do not establish a universal Mbps-per-person rule. Household size alone cannot tell you how much speed you need.

Use the household guide as a starting point, not a promise

NBN’s household guide groups needs by the kind of use a connection is expected to support. Its typical busy-period download benchmarks are broad categories—not current retail plan names, guaranteed results or a formula for every home.

NBN household-guide category Typical busy-period download benchmark Activity examples in the guide
Basic Less than 15 Mbps Very basic use
Standard At least 15 Mbps A few people browsing, emailing or watching SD video
Standard Plus At least 30 Mbps Many users or devices, HD streaming, online games and working from home
Premium At least 60 Mbps Multiple users or devices, 4K streaming, and large file uploads and downloads

These figures are NBN’s guide benchmarks for typical busy-period download speed. They are not a statement that every retail service in a category will deliver that speed to every household. They are most useful for narrowing the sort of service to investigate after you have identified your busiest activities.

Understand what current NBN wholesale tiers describe

NBN’s residential wholesale speed-plan page uses product names and capability descriptions that differ from the household guide’s Basic, Standard, Standard Plus and Premium labels. The figures below are wholesale product descriptions, not retail prices or a promise of actual customer speed. Technology and address affect which services are available and what performance is attainable.

Wholesale product example Download figure in the product description Capability examples described by NBN
Home Basic II 25 Mbps 4K on one device or HD streaming, basic online games and video calls
Home Standard 50 Mbps on FTTP and HFC; 25–50 Mbps listed for FTTN/B Designed to support 4K on one or two devices, online gaming and video calls

NBN describes higher tiers as supporting more simultaneous activity, including multiple 4K streams alongside gaming, calls or large transfers. Check the current residential wholesale speed-plan descriptions for the technology-specific tiers relevant to your address. A capability example such as “supports 4K” should not be read as a guarantee that every stream, device or room will perform perfectly: home Wi-Fi, provider network performance and other conditions also matter.

Compare upload as well as download

Download speed affects receiving streamed video, webpages and files. Upload speed matters when sending large files, backing up photos or video to cloud storage, and transmitting your side of a video call. If the household has several people on calls at once or regularly uploads large projects, compare upload figures rather than choosing only by the download number.

The NBN speed-plan page lists both upload and download information and gives examples of large-file upload times. Those capabilities vary by plan tier and access technology. Before choosing, check the relevant product details and the retailer’s offer for both directions; do not assume that two plans with similar advertised download speeds have the same upload performance.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps | Reliable Performance, Easy Set Up, 20 devices, 4× Gigabit Port, Dual Band, AX1800
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

A fast download tier may be worthwhile for a home that frequently moves large files, but it will not solve every call or upload problem. If the connection is unreliable only in a distant room, the limitation could be Wi-Fi coverage. If calls are affected when several people are uploading, upload capacity may be relevant. Matching the symptom to the direction of traffic helps avoid paying for a larger download tier that does not address the bottleneck.

Check address availability and actual busy-period performance

Plans and speeds are not identical across the NBN footprint. Access technology, service configuration, provider network design, equipment and setup, software, and busy-period conditions can all affect the experience. For Fixed Wireless, the number of people using the service concurrently is also relevant; satellite connections can have latency that is noticeable in interactive uses. NBN’s household guidance and speed-plan descriptions explain factors that shape performance.

When comparing offers, distinguish the plan’s headline or maximum capability from the speed expected during busy periods. This is particularly important for Fixed Wireless: NBN’s page discusses different measures and periods, and a potential maximum download speed is not a guaranteed evening speed. Its Fixed Wireless network explanation provides further context on network capability. Check the offer and address-specific information from the retail provider before switching.

NBN announced in May 2026 that more than 150 providers offered NBN plans and listed wholesale price changes effective 1 July 2026. Wholesale charges are paid within the supply chain; they are not the monthly prices households pay. Retail prices, included terms and address eligibility need to be checked with providers at the time you compare.

Rule out home Wi-Fi and equipment limits before upgrading

If a speed test or device feels slow, first work out whether the issue is the NBN service or the connection inside the home. A plan supplies bandwidth to the premises; Wi-Fi coverage, router capability, cabling, ports and the device itself determine how much of it a particular device can use. NBN notes that a Wi-Fi 4-only router can limit connected devices to a maximum speed of 100 Mbps. That is a router limitation, not a reason to assume every household needs a faster plan.

Try these checks before changing tiers

  1. Compare locations. Test near the router and in the room where the problem occurs. A large difference points toward coverage or interference rather than necessarily indicating insufficient plan speed.
  2. Check the router and connection path. Confirm the router, cable, Ethernet port and device can support the speed you are paying for. A weak link anywhere in that chain can cap performance.
  3. Improve placement. NBN recommends placing the router centrally and away from thick walls and furniture. Its in-home setup guidance covers practical optimisation steps.
  4. Check whether several people are using the connection at once. Repeat a test when fewer demanding activities are running and during the evening period that matters to you. Compare like with like; a single result cannot explain every slowdown.
  5. Consider new Wi-Fi equipment only if it addresses the limit. A Wi-Fi 6 router or mesh system may help when the existing router or coverage is the bottleneck, but check compatibility and the home layout first. New equipment cannot increase the underlying NBN service speed.

NBN’s device-count guidance supports treating in-home setup as part of the decision, not as an automatic equipment-shopping prompt. If a wired device near the router performs well while Wi-Fi devices farther away struggle, a higher-tier broadband plan may not fix the actual problem. If all devices, including a wired one, slow down together during busy periods, check your plan’s actual performance and contact the provider about the service.

Choose a plan by comparing the whole offer

Once you have a realistic picture of concurrent use and ruled out obvious home-network constraints, compare plans available at your address. Look beyond the largest download number: the best fit is a service that meets the household’s peak needs at a price and with terms that make sense.

  • Address and access technology: Confirm the offer is available at your location and note the technology, since speed options and performance differ.
  • Busy-period speed: Compare the retailer’s typical evening speed information with the activities you expect to run together, not just the maximum or tier label.
  • Upload: Check it if calls, cloud backups, creative work or large file transfers are routine.
  • Retail price and terms: Compare the monthly charge and any included conditions directly with the provider. NBN wholesale prices are not retail bills.
  • Home-network readiness: Consider whether your router, Wi-Fi coverage, ports and devices can use the service you are considering.

If the household mainly browses, emails and watches lower-resolution video, a top tier may bring little practical value. If several people regularly stream 4K, game, join calls and transfer large files at the same time, a higher tier may be more appropriate—but only if it is available and the service, upload capability and home network can support those uses. Revisit the choice when household routines change rather than upgrading solely because the device count has grown.
