How Much Mobile Data Does Larix Broadcaster Use for a YouTube Livestream?

Larix data use depends mainly on outgoing bitrate and runtime. Use bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.45 for a decimal-GB estimate, then leave room for variation and carrier accounting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimate Larix Broadcaster’s mobile data use from the stream’s average bitrate and duration: GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.45. At 10 Mbps, for example, a one-hour stream uses about 4.5 decimal GB for the encoded stream. Actual phone or carrier usage can differ, so leave extra room for overhead and bitrate variation.

Estimate data use from bitrate and runtime

Larix Broadcaster has no single fixed data-use figure per hour. Its outgoing stream’s bitrate and how long you broadcast are the main inputs. For a quick planning estimate, use:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × stream hours × 0.45

This uses decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB) and estimates encoded stream data at the stated average bitrate. It does not measure all data counted by your phone or carrier, and it does not include a guaranteed allowance for network overhead or retransmissions.

Examples for YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates

YouTube lists recommended bitrates for live encoder settings. The data figures below are calculations from the H.264 recommendations, not data-use measurements published by YouTube or Softvelum.

YouTube H.264 setting Recommended bitrate Estimated data per hour Estimated data for two hours
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps About 1.8 GB About 3.6 GB
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps About 2.7 GB About 5.4 GB
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps About 4.5 GB About 9 GB
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps About 5.4 GB About 10.8 GB

The recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. These examples use YouTube’s H.264 column; consult its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for other settings.

Why your actual usage may differ

  • Bitrate: The configured or actual average bitrate is the biggest factor in this estimate. Softvelum, the publisher of Larix, says that the selected or default bitrate is the encoder’s target and that Larix generally publishes the stream at that target. See the Larix FAQ.
  • Runtime: At a steady bitrate, twice the streaming time means roughly twice the encoded data.
  • Adaptive bitrate and connection conditions: Larix offers adaptive bitrate for poor network conditions, so the rate can change rather than remain at one fixed target. The Larix FAQ does not give a universal percentage by which this reduces data.
  • Network and carrier accounting: The cited guidance does not establish one overhead percentage for protocol data, retransmissions, or carrier counters. Do not treat the formula as an exact prediction of your plan’s billed usage.

Check your Larix settings and plan a stream

  1. In Larix Broadcaster, check the outgoing video bitrate and the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Use the settings that match the actual broadcast, not just the phone’s screen resolution.
  2. Multiply the bitrate in Mbps by the planned stream duration in hours, then by 0.45. For example, 6 Mbps × 2 hours × 0.45 gives an estimate of 5.4 GB.
  3. Confirm that your mobile upload can sustain the selected stream rate. YouTube advises speed testing, representative pre-stream testing, and monitoring stream health during a broadcast in its encoder settings guidance.
  4. If your data allowance is tight, run a representative test and compare your phone or carrier data counter immediately before and after. Keep a margin rather than planning to use the full allowance based only on the calculation.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded video or playlist that you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than from Larix on your phone: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube, not camera livestreaming. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
