For professional photos plus regular video, 512 GB is a sensible starting point if you keep active projects and originals on your iPhone. Consider 1 TB if you frequently record ProRes, shoot long days, or retain many files locally. A 256 GB model can work for mostly stills and HEVC/H.264 video if you regularly transfer files off the phone. These are workflow recommendations, not guaranteed capacity figures: actual storage use varies with format, resolution, frame rate, what you film, and how long you keep originals on-device.
Choose storage by the way you shoot and keep files
| Workflow | Practical starting point | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly still photos with occasional short clips | 256 GB | Can be reasonable if you routinely back up or move photos and clips off the phone. |
| Professional stills and frequent HEVC/H.264 video | 512 GB | Provides a more comfortable working buffer for active projects and local originals. |
| Frequent ProRes or long recording days | 1 TB | Offers more internal room for large footage and originals you want to retain locally. |
These tiers are guidance, not measured capacity tests or Apple recommendations. Apple does not provide a universal number of photos or recording minutes per gigabyte for every iPhone model and setting. Leave room for apps, iOS, other files, exports, and a usable free-space buffer rather than treating the advertised capacity as entirely available for camera files.

Why video format changes the answer
Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files, and ProRes recording requires at least 10% of the device’s storage to remain free. The size of a ProRes file is not fixed: Apple’s Apple ProRes technical document says data rates vary with codec type, image content, frame size, and frame rate.
HEVC and H.264 are also listed among the video formats supported by the standard iPhone 17, which records 4K Dolby Vision video up to 60 fps according to Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications. A phone used mainly for still photography and compressed video has a different storage burden from one recording high-resolution ProRes footage.

Check which ProRes modes your iPhone supports
Storage capacity can affect the ProRes recording modes available. Apple’s About Apple ProRes on iPhone table limits 128 GB models to ProRes 1080p at 25 or 30 fps. It lists 1080p at 60 fps for 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities, and lists ProRes 4K at 24, 25, and 30 fps for supported models. Availability depends on the iPhone model as well as its capacity, so check Apple’s table for the exact device before choosing a configuration.
For compatible Pro models, external recording can shift some footage storage from the phone to a connected drive:

Questions to answer before buying
- Which format will you record? Distinguish HEVC/H.264 from ProRes; ProRes can consume substantially more space.
- What resolution and frame rate do you use? Pay particular attention to 4K60 and 4K120 ProRes, including whether your model can record those modes internally or externally.
- How long are your shoots, and how many takes do you keep? Longer sessions and multiple retained takes increase the amount of footage you need to manage.
- Where will originals live? Decide whether you will keep them on the iPhone, transfer them to a computer or drive, or use a cloud workflow.
- How much working space do you need between transfers and edits? Build in room for exports and everyday phone use, as well as the free-space buffer ProRes recording requires.
What cannot be predicted as a fixed number
Neither Apple’s cited support page nor its codec document establishes a guaranteed photos-per-gigabyte or minutes-per-gigabyte figure that applies across models and settings. In particular, ProRes size varies with the content and recording settings. Estimate your needs from your own formats, typical shoot length, and offload schedule rather than relying on a single universal capacity conversion.
