There is no single internet speed that is “OK” for every household. The right Mbps depends on what people do online at the same time, whether they stream in HD or 4K, and whether they need upload capacity for calls, live video, or large files. Use service recommendations as starting points, then check the speeds your devices actually receive.
What counts as an OK internet speed?
Start with simultaneous use, not just the number of people in your home. A single HD stream has different demands from several people streaming, joining video calls, gaming, or downloading files at once. Google’s illustrative household tiers describe 7 Mbps and up as “Ok” for one HD stream, 25 Mbps and up as suitable for multiple HD videos, and 100 Mbps and up for several activities such as multiple 4K streams, games, or a video call. These are examples, not universal minimums or guarantees. Google Nest Help’s household speed guidance does not establish a single threshold that fits every home.

For a specific service, use its own recommendations. YouTube recommends sustained download speeds of 5 Mbps for 1080p playback and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD playback. Those figures apply to YouTube playback; they are not a complete household plan recommendation. The difference between YouTube’s playback guidance and Google’s household examples reflects their different purposes: one describes service-specific video playback, while the other illustrates overlapping household activities. YouTube’s system requirements lists its playback recommendations.
How to estimate speed for your activities
Use the figures below as reference points, not promises of performance. An activity can be affected by other people and devices using the connection at the same time.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Why upload speed matters too
Download speed affects receiving content such as video and webpages. Upload speed matters when you send video or files, join calls, or broadcast a live stream. A plan with ample download capacity can still feel limiting if its upload capacity is insufficient for the household’s use.
Regulatory discussions offer context, but their figures should not be treated as a required upload speed for every home. In a 2024 proceeding, the FCC cited a 2021 Consortium for School Networking benchmark of 12 Mbps upload per student and discussed whether a 3 Mbps upload benchmark could be inadequate even for one student’s household needs. The FCC’s 2023 proceeding also discussed a 20 Mbps upload benchmark. These are cited educational and regulatory contexts, not universal residential recommendations. See the FCC’s 2024 discussion and FCC 23-89.

For creators, an upload bitrate is a different measure from the speed a viewer needs to watch. YouTube recommends a 50 Mbps bitrate for live encoding at 4K/2160p and 60 frames per second using H.264. That is the encoder’s stream sent to YouTube Live, not a normal viewer’s download requirement. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance gives the context.

- Test where the problem happens. Run a speed test on the device and in the room where streaming, calls, or downloads are slow. Record both download and upload results.
- Repeat the test. A single result may not represent typical performance. Retest if the result is unexpected, and note whether other people or devices were using the connection.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if practical. A wired test can help isolate whether Wi-Fi contributes to the issue. YouTube recommends hardwiring as a troubleshooting step for streaming. A wired result does not increase the speed supplied by your internet provider. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Use the comparison to choose what to investigate. If Ethernet is materially faster than Wi-Fi, in-home wireless conditions may be contributing. If both are poor, check your plan and service conditions or contact your provider. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee about the cause.
Observed speeds can vary with time of day, concurrent use, device capability, router placement, wireless interference, and the test endpoint. The cited guidance supports testing and retesting; it does not establish a universal extra-Mbps cushion that every household should add.

When to consider a plan or Wi-Fi change
Consider a faster plan only after checking actual performance and comparing it with the household’s simultaneous activities. When comparing plans available at your address, check upload as well as download speed, price, availability, and any data limits; these details depend on location and provider.
If a wired result is good but Wi-Fi is weak in certain rooms, investigate coverage and wireless conditions before assuming the internet plan itself is too slow. A router or mesh system may be relevant to a coverage problem, but changing equipment cannot raise the capacity delivered by the provider’s plan. If wired and wireless tests are both poor, focus first on the plan or service conditions.
