That is a baseline, not a guarantee: some video apps need more, and the speed and resolution available at the device can vary. For HD, Google TV’s troubleshooting guidance says at least 2 Mbps, but that figure comes from a different support context.
Google’s recommended speed for Chromecast
Google says Chromecast 4K content requires a 4K-capable display and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps. Its separate 4K streaming guide also recommends at least 20 Mbps and cautions that some video apps may require faster speeds. These are Google support recommendations; the pages do not state a publication year.

Think of 20 Mbps as a starting point for the 4K stream, not a promise that every app will play reliably at its highest quality. Other household internet use and changes in the connection can affect what reaches the Chromecast.
Why Google’s support pages show different numbers
Google publishes other speed figures in Google TV troubleshooting and compatibility guidance. They are not all Chromecast-specific recommendations, so do not average them or treat them as interchangeable.

| Google guidance | Speed figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Chromecast device requirements | At least 20 Mbps | Chromecast 4K content; also requires a 4K-capable display. |
| Google’s 4K streaming guide | At least 20 Mbps recommended | 4K streaming; some video apps may need faster speeds. |
| Google TV playback troubleshooting | At least 2 Mbps for HD; at least 14 Mbps for 4K | Speed guidance in troubleshooting steps. |
| Google TV 4K device requirements | At least 15 Mbps | Download-speed requirement in the 4K device compatibility section. |
For a Chromecast 4K question, use Google’s Chromecast-specific 20 Mbps guidance as the clearest reference. The 14 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures belong to separate Google TV contexts and do not establish a guaranteed minimum for every Chromecast app or setup.
Check that the Chromecast and screen can deliver the quality you want
A fast connection cannot make an incompatible device or display play in 4K. Google lists Google TV Streamer (4K), Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and Chromecast Ultra as supporting 4K; Chromecast with Google TV (HD) does not. Google’s 4K guidance also calls for a 4K display, HDCP 2.2 support in the HDMI path, 4K programming, a high-speed HDMI cable, and the included power supply. HDR is separate: the display must support HDR for HDR playback.

App availability, the content itself, and any service subscription requirements also matter. Check the specific app and screen setup rather than assuming that a 4K-capable Chromecast alone guarantees 4K output.

An advertised internet-plan speed is not the same as the throughput available at the TV. Google warns that ISP network availability over time and other factors can affect internet speed and the best resolution the device can show.

- Check the connection’s actual download performance near the streaming setup, rather than relying only on the plan’s advertised rate.
- Consider whether other devices are using the connection when streaming slows down.
- Do not treat any particular speed-test procedure or extra headroom percentage as a Google requirement; its cited guidance does not specify one.
Troubleshoot buffering or lower-than-expected quality
- Confirm the playback chain. Check the Chromecast model, display capability, HDMI path, content quality, and app requirements against the target resolution. For 4K, Google’s guidance calls for a supported 4K device and display, HDCP 2.2 support, and 4K programming.
- Check real-world connection performance. Look at download performance near the Chromecast and account for other household use or changes in ISP availability. A plan’s advertised rate alone does not show what reaches the device.
- Consider Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable. Google lists separately sold Ethernet power adapters for Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K. Chromecast Ultra’s power adapter has an Ethernet port. Verify compatibility for the exact model before buying; a wired local connection may help with an unreliable Wi-Fi link, but it does not increase the speed supplied by the internet plan.
Google’s Chromecast requirements, 4K streaming guide, and device specifications provide the relevant model, display, and connection details.
