There is no single ideal bandwidth limit for every home. Choose a plan by looking at what everyone does online during the busiest period—not just how many people live there—and make sure its download and upload speeds can handle those activities at the same time. If service seems slower than the plan promises, test the connection and check your equipment before upgrading.
What bandwidth means—and what “Mbps” tells you
Bandwidth is the amount of data a connection can carry over time. Internet plans usually express speed in megabits per second (Mbps). Download speed measures data arriving at your home; upload speed measures data leaving it. They are separate capabilities, and a plan can have a much lower upload rate than download rate.

When someone asks, “What internet speed do I need?” the useful answer depends on which activities overlap. A single stream may work well on a modest connection, while several streams, video calls, large downloads, and backups happening together can require considerably more capacity.
Estimate the busiest hour, not the household headcount
List the activities likely to happen at once during a normal busy period. Include streaming on each screen, video calls, online gaming, game or software downloads, cloud backups, and large file uploads. The number of connected devices alone is not a speed requirement: some use little data while idle, while one active download can consume substantial capacity.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The FCC reported an average of 20.2 connected devices per U.S. household in the first half of 2022, and approximately 21% of U.S. households had four or more people in 2022. Those figures help explain why household use varies, but they do not prescribe a particular plan. The FCC cautions that simply adding up estimates for individual activities can mislead; actual needs depend on the household’s simultaneous use and other factors. FCC 23-89 (2023)

For a service-specific reference, YouTube recommends approximate sustained speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K UHD, 5 Mbps for 1080p HD, 2.5 Mbps for 720p HD, 1.1 Mbps for 480p SD, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p SD. These are YouTube playback recommendations, not a household-wide allowance; they do not account for other devices or concurrent activity. YouTube system requirements

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Choose download and upload capacity separately
Download capacity is central to streaming, browsing, and receiving large files. Upload capacity deserves equal attention if people in the household make video calls, send large files, back up devices to the cloud, or broadcast live. Multiple callers or students working remotely can make simultaneous upload use important even when downloads appear adequate.
In its 2024 order, the FCC discusses upload needs for remote uses, including a 12 Mbps-per-student upload benchmark recommended by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) in 2021. That benchmark is attributed to CoSN through the FCC; it is not a universal upload requirement for every student or household. FCC 24-27 (2024)

When comparing plans, look at both advertised rates. A fast download tier may still be a poor fit if its upload rate cannot keep up with your calls, backups, or live-streaming workload.

Do not treat a stream’s published recommendation as the exact total speed your home needs. That figure describes one service’s playback guidance; other devices may be active at the same time, and real-world performance can vary. A plan should accommodate your peak overlap rather than only one activity in isolation.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

The FCC’s 2023 order discusses 100/20 Mbps as a level households could easily exceed; it is not a universal minimum for every home. The right choice depends on your actual use, available plans, and measured performance—not a single benchmark. FCC 23-89 (2023)
Test your current connection before upgrading
A speed test is a snapshot, not a permanent description of service. Google notes that results depend on when and where a test is run. Test at a typical busy time and repeat at another time; compare the results with the plan’s advertised rates. Where practical, test a computer connected to the router by Ethernet as well as a device over Wi-Fi. Google speed-test guidance
- Run and repeat a test. Measure at a typical busy time, then test again at a different time.
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi results. An Ethernet test helps distinguish the internet service from wireless limitations inside the home.
- If wired is as expected but Wi-Fi is slow, check the device’s distance from the router, walls and other obstacles, router placement, frequency band, interference, and device capability.
- Check the wired path. For internet service above 100 Mbps, Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable. Ensure the cable and every port along the connection support the target speed. Google Wi-Fi troubleshooting
- If wired results remain low, ask your ISP about the plan’s limits, outages, or congestion before replacing the router or other equipment.
A cable or port rated below the speed you are trying to use can bottleneck a wired connection. Replacing it with properly rated equipment can remove that local restriction, but it cannot increase the bandwidth your ISP supplies.

Compare plans using the whole connection
Once you know what the home needs, assess each available plan on more than its headline download number:
- Advertised download and upload rates.
- Whether both rates can support the household’s busiest simultaneous activities.
- Wired and Wi-Fi results measured during the busy period.
- Whether the router, cables, ports, and devices can handle the plan’s speeds.
- Local price, availability, data limits, and contract terms.
Prices, plan details, and availability depend on location and provider; check those terms directly for your address. If your current wired results match the plan but busy-hour use still feels constrained, an upgrade may help. If only Wi-Fi tests are poor, investigate the wireless network first.
