How Much Free Space Should You Keep on a Windows C: Drive?

Microsoft has no universal free-space target for C:. Learn typical update requirements, where to check available space, and ways to clear it safely.

There is no single free-space quota that Microsoft recommends for every Windows C: drive. Keep enough room for your files and normal Windows operation, and use the space requirement shown in Windows Update when installing a particular update. Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6 GB–11 GB or more, while quality updates typically need 2 GB–3 GB or more; actual needs vary by device and update.

Free space is not the same as drive capacity

A drive’s total capacity is how much storage it has; occupied space is what files and software are using; free space is what remains. Windows 11’s minimum requirement of a 64 GB or larger storage device refers to total capacity—not 64 GB that must remain free. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications describe the capacity minimum, not a free-space target.

Update installation has its own temporary storage needs. Windows may need room to download and apply an update and to support the option to remove it, typically for 10 days. Personal files, installed apps, optional features, language resources, drivers, quality updates, and system files such as hiberfile.sys and pagefile.sys can all affect the amount needed.

How much space do Windows updates need?

Microsoft Support gives these typical figures, while noting that requirements can vary. The amount Windows Update displays for your device and update is the more useful target when you are ready to install.

Update type Typical free space stated by Microsoft What to know
Feature update 6 GB–11 GB or more Need depends on the update path and what is installed; this is not a guaranteed maximum.
Quality update 2 GB–3 GB or more Actual device requirements can vary.

Microsoft describes different feature-update paths depending on available space and the installation approach. Examples include about 5.5 GB or more for a minimal-content path optimized for disk space, 13.75 GB or more for a higher-content minimal-space path, and 20 GB or more for a path optimized to reduce offline time. These examples describe particular configurations, not a universal reserve to keep free. See Microsoft’s update storage guidance for the update workflow and its examples.

Check how much space is available

  1. In File Explorer: Open File Explorer and select This PC. Available space appears under Devices and drives.
  2. In Settings: Open Settings > System > Storage to see a categorized view of storage, including installed apps, temporary files, and system or reserved use. Labels can vary slightly between Windows versions.

Windows does not publish one percentage of C: that everyone should leave free. Microsoft notes that the low-space threshold varies with disk size and minimum operating thresholds. A fixed 10% or 15% rule is not a Microsoft requirement.

Free space without deleting files you want

Review cleanup suggestions first

Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations and review the proposed items before removing them. You can also use Storage Sense for temporary files and other content you choose to manage. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance explains its settings and behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:. By default, it can run when the device is low on disk space and remove unnecessary temporary files. Recycle Bin contents may be removed according to the period you configure. Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default unless you change those settings; files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense’s cloud-content management. Check the selected categories and settings before cleanup.

Move large personal files or change where new files go

Moving videos, archives, or other large personal files to another drive can create room without removing them. You can also change where new content is saved so the system drive does not keep absorbing it. Choose a destination you can access and back up; moving files is not itself a backup.

Use OneDrive Files On-Demand selectively

Files On-Demand can keep eligible OneDrive files represented by smaller placeholders on the PC while the full files remain in the cloud. This can reduce local storage use, but opening cloud-only files depends on access to the OneDrive account and an internet connection. Files set to Always keep on this device remain stored locally.

Check for unexpected storage use

If storage has disappeared unexpectedly and you suspect malware, Microsoft advises running a malware scan. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system folders or files to reclaim space; Windows may need them to operate or update.

If Windows Update says there is not enough space

  1. Use the update’s own estimate. If Windows Update offers a Fix issues flow, follow it to see the options for that device and update.
  2. Review and remove only what you choose. Check Cleanup recommendations, temporary files, and large personal files before deleting or moving anything.
  3. Consider external storage only if offered. Microsoft’s described update workflow can use an external storage device with at least 10 GB free. Back it up first; Windows may still require some additional space on the internal drive. An external drive is a conditional option for an update or file relocation, not a routine requirement. See Microsoft’s instructions for freeing update space.

Choose an approach that fits the files and update

Approach Risk to wanted files Ongoing effect Network dependence
Reviewed Cleanup recommendations Lower when you inspect each item before removal; deleting selected files is still permanent unless backed up. Usually a one-time cleanup. No cloud connection required for local cleanup.
Storage Sense Depends on configured settings; review what it can delete, especially Recycle Bin or any categories you opt into. Can run automatically under configured conditions. Cloud-content management depends on its settings; Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default.
Move files or redirect new content Files remain yours, but the destination should be reliable and backed up. Moving files frees local space; redirecting new content can prevent the drive from filling as quickly. No cloud service required if using local or external storage.
OneDrive Files On-Demand Files remain in OneDrive, but cloud-only copies are not locally available if account or network access is unavailable. Can reduce local use for eligible files while they remain cloud-only. Yes, for files that are not downloaded locally.
External storage for an update Back up the device before using it in the update workflow. May help with a particular update or file move; not a standing free-space requirement. No cloud access required, but the update may still need internal free space.

The first options to try are the ones that let you identify and keep the files you care about. Use an external drive only when moving files or the specific update flow makes it useful.
