There is no well-supported single global total for AI’s electricity use. The best available headline figures measure all data centres—AI and non-AI workloads together. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated their electricity use at 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024 and 485 TWh in 2025; its latest central projection puts the total near 950 TWh in 2030. AI is a major driver of growth, but those totals should not be described as AI-only consumption.
How much electricity do data centres use?
A terawatt-hour is a unit of energy: one trillion watt-hours. The figures below are annual electricity consumption, not the amount of power a facility draws at a single moment. The IEA’s 2025 and 2026 figures are successive estimates and projections, not measurements of AI alone.

| Scope and geography | Year and figure | Status and source |
|---|---|---|
| Data centres worldwide, including AI and non-AI workloads | 2024: 415 TWh; about 1.5% of global electricity | IEA estimate published in 2025 |
| Data centres worldwide, including AI and non-AI workloads | 2025: 485 TWh | IEA estimate published in 2026 |
| Data centres worldwide, including AI and non-AI workloads | 2030: about 945 TWh | IEA 2025 base-case projection; just under 3% of global electricity |
| Data centres worldwide, including AI and non-AI workloads | 2030: about 950 TWh | IEA 2026 central projection; around 3% of global demand |
| AI-focused data centres worldwide | 2025–2030: electricity consumption projected to triple | IEA 2026 projection; this is an AI-focused facility measure, not all data-centre electricity |
| Data centres in the United States | 2023: 176 TWh, or 4.4% of U.S. electricity consumption | U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), summarizing the 2024 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) report |
| Data centres in the United States | 2028: 325–580 TWh, or 6.7–12% of U.S. electricity | LBNL forecast range reported by DOE in 2024; not a global projection |
The two IEA projections for 2030 are close, but each belongs to a particular report and forecast. They are not future measurements, and the global totals include non-AI computing, storage, networking and facility systems. The 2025 IEA report estimated that data-centre electricity use had grown by about 12% annually over the preceding five years.

Why does AI increase data-centre demand?
AI workloads use accelerated servers
Training a model and serving it to users both require computing. As organizations adopt AI, they are adding accelerated servers designed for demanding workloads. In the IEA’s 2025 base case, electricity use by accelerated servers grows about 30% per year from 2024 to 2030, compared with 9% annual growth for conventional servers. Accelerated servers account for nearly half of the projected net increase in data-centre electricity use over that period.

More computing power is concentrated in less space
AI hardware can pack substantial electrical demand into a relatively small physical area. The IEA’s 2026 analysis finds that AI-server power density increased 11-fold between 2020 and 2025. A dense installation needs electrical connections and power equipment capable of delivering that load, as well as systems that remove the resulting heat. High power density is a facility-design and grid-connection challenge even when annual electricity totals are considered separately.
The facility consumes more than the servers
Data-centre electricity also serves storage and networking equipment, cooling, uninterruptible power supplies and other supporting systems. The division varies with facility design and installed equipment; server electricity is not the whole facility bill. In the IEA’s 2025 base case, cooling and other infrastructure account for about one-fifth of the net increase in data-centre demand through 2030.

Why can a modest global share matter to local grids?
Annual global totals conceal where and when electricity is needed. Data centres are clustered: the IEA reported that the United States accounted for 45% of global data-centre electricity use in 2024, China 25% and Europe 15%. Nearly half of U.S. data-centre capacity was concentrated in five regional clusters. A large new load in one area can therefore be consequential for local generation, transmission and connection capacity even if the worldwide share remains limited.
In the IEA’s 2025 base case, data centres make up less than 10% of global electricity-demand growth from 2024 to 2030, while they could account for nearly half of U.S. electricity-demand growth through 2030. These figures use different geographic scopes; they illustrate why global averages alone do not describe the pressure on a particular grid. The IEA also notes that AI-focused data centres can draw as much electricity as power-intensive factories.

Where will the electricity come from?
The IEA’s 2025 analysis projects renewables will meet nearly half of the growth in data-centre electricity demand through 2030. It also projects natural gas and coal together will meet more than 40% of that additional demand. Those are estimates of the physical electricity supply, including grid and on-site generation, and the mix varies by region.
A company’s renewable-energy contract does not by itself mean that renewable generation physically serves every data-centre load at every hour. Contractual procurement and the power physically supplied to a facility are different accounting questions.

The IEA’s 2026 update describes rapid changes in AI training and model-use loads as a reliability concern. It estimates that global data-centre battery installations could reach 20–25 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 if incentives support deployment. Some U.S. developers are also pursuing on-site natural-gas generation amid delays in connecting to the grid; on-site generation does not remove the need to address grid bottlenecks.

Can you calculate the electricity used by one AI prompt?
Not as a universal figure from these sources. Electricity per request depends on the model, the task, the hardware, utilization and the boundary being counted—for example, whether the estimate includes only computation or also facility overhead. Aggregate and scenario-level estimates do not establish one number that applies to every prompt. A per-prompt claim is meaningful only when its workload, system and accounting method are specified.

How to interpret claims about AI energy
- Check what is being counted. A data-centre total includes non-AI workloads and supporting facility equipment unless the source explicitly defines a narrower scope.
- Check the geography and year. The U.S. DOE/LBNL figures describe U.S. data centres, while the IEA figures above describe global totals.
- Separate power from energy. Power density and GW describe the rate of electricity delivery; TWh describes energy consumed over time.
- Keep projections separate from measurements. Scenario results depend on assumptions and are not observed future consumption.
- Distinguish physical supply from purchasing claims. A renewable contract is not the same as an hour-by-hour account of electricity delivered to a facility.
The IEA’s 2026 executive summary of Key Questions on Energy and AI describes AI as “the most important driver of this growth, alongside growing demand for other digital services.” That statement identifies AI as a leading driver, not the sole source of data-centre demand.
