Use this formula:
Cost = average watts × stream hours ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For example, a system averaging 300 W for four hours uses 1.2 kWh. At the U.S. average residential rate of 17.30 cents/kWh in 2025, that illustrative session costs about $0.21. The 300 W is an arithmetic example—not a measured or representative streaming PC. Replace it with your own measured average and bill rate.
How to calculate your streaming electricity cost
- Find average power draw. Measure the setup at the wall during a representative stream, preferably over the full session. Use the average, not the power supply’s rated maximum or a component’s advertised maximum.
- Record the stream duration. Use hours; for example, 90 minutes is 1.5 hours.
- Use your electricity rate. Enter the price per kWh that best reflects the additional electricity use. Your bill or utility tariff is more relevant than a national average.
- Apply the formula. Multiply watts by hours, divide by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours, then multiply by the rate.
If the meter covers only the computer, call the result PC-only. A wall measurement of the complete setup can also include displays, capture equipment, lights, audio equipment, and network gear drawing through that outlet. Include other devices only if they are inside the measurement boundary or measured separately.

Example with a dated U.S. reference rate
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports a 2025 average residential electricity price of 17.30 cents/kWh. At that rate, a 300 W setup running for four hours uses 1.2 kWh and costs about $0.21. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a claim about typical PC power use or anyone’s personal tariff. Why the cost varies from one stream to another
PC workload and stream settings
Power draw depends on the computer and what it is doing. OBS notes that requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; gameplay or other demanding scenes can also change the workload. Keep codec, resolution, frame rate, scene, game workload, and encoder configuration consistent when comparing measurements. OBS Studio System Requirements

What Replay Buffer and recording change
Replay Buffer is an optional OBS capture feature, separate from sending a live stream. Turning it off may change the work your system performs, but the available guidance does not establish a universal wattage or percentage saved. The effect depends on the system and configuration. Likewise, disabling recording outputs can simplify a comparison, but it does not imply a known reduction in power.

Software versus hardware encoding
Hardware encoding moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. That describes where the work is performed; it does not prove that hardware encoding always reduces total system electricity use. Compare measured wall power under the same workload rather than assuming one encoder is more efficient. OBS Hardware Encoding
Bitrate is not an electricity-cost figure
YouTube’s bitrate recommendations concern stream ingestion and video quality, not the power drawn by your computer. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 8 Mbps at 720p60 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60; its AV1/H.265 recommendations are 6 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively. Check the official table for your exact format before configuring a stream. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That platform-side process is not a reason to treat bitrate as a direct measure of your PC’s electricity use. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Choosing an electricity price for the estimate
The EIA’s 2025 figures provide broad U.S. reference points, not a personalized rate: residential, 17.30 cents/kWh; commercial, 13.41 cents/kWh; industrial, 8.62 cents/kWh; and all sectors combined, 13.63 cents/kWh. For an individual household estimate, the residential figure is the closest broad comparison, but your own bill is better. EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3

In 2025, EIA’s all-customer-type state range ran from 8.20 cents/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72 cents/kWh in Hawaii; this is not a residential-only comparison. Local tariffs can also involve taxes, fixed charges, time-of-use periods, and other billing structures. Use the marginal or effective rate that best matches the added use, and state which rate you used. EIA: Prices and factors affecting prices
How to compare OBS settings fairly
- Measure average wall watts over a representative session, rather than relying on a rated maximum.
- Keep stream duration, encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, game or scene workload, and other settings consistent.
- Use the same meter boundary each time: PC-only results should not be compared with a reading that also includes displays or accessories.
- Apply the same electricity rate to both readings so the comparison isolates power use rather than tariff differences.
- Change one setting—such as Replay Buffer or a recording output—at a time. No controlled benchmark establishes a general OBS Replay Buffer saving.
Common estimation mistakes
- Using the power supply rating as actual consumption: its rated capacity is not the PC’s measured draw during a stream.
- Leaving out devices without labeling the result: a PC-only measurement does not include a display or other equipment unless it is measured too.
- Assuming Replay Buffer has a fixed cost: its effect varies, and no universal wattage saving is established.
- Assuming hardware encoding always saves electricity: it changes where encoding work happens, but whole-system consumption must be measured.
- Using bitrate as a power proxy: bitrate recommendations guide YouTube stream quality and ingestion, not electricity billing.
- Applying a national average as your exact price: local rates and billing structures vary; use your own bill where possible.
