Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a single self-hosted n8n instance, budget roughly $5–$20 per month for a VPS with about 4 GB of RAM and PostgreSQL. Queue mode, multiple workers, large payloads, or high availability can push the server toward 8 GB of RAM and increase the bill. Those figures come from third-party hosting guides rather than live-verified provider quotations, so use them as planning ranges for 2026, not guaranteed prices.

Reported prices vary by provider, region, billing term, and whether management is included. The following figures were published in third-party guides; the guides did not establish a common publication year and prices may have changed since they were written.
| Example service or plan | Reported monthly price | Capacity or intended use stated by the source |
|---|---|---|
| Hetzner CX22 | About $4.51 | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB disk |
| VPS.US KVM1 | $10 | Testing plan |
| VPS.US KVM2 | $20 | Testing plan |
| VPS.US KVM4 | $40 | Production plan |
| MassiveGrid Professional | $19.16 | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB NVMe |
| Elestio managed n8n | About $17 | 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM |
A low-cost 4 GB server therefore lands near the lower end of the range, while a managed service or an 8 GB machine is closer to the upper end. A $40 production example shows that some vendors position a larger plan well above the commonly quoted $5–$20 budget.

What the budget buys: single-instance n8n
The $5–$20 range generally describes one n8n main process on one VPS, with a database and Docker-based deployment. It is the simplest useful architecture for personal automation, internal tools, and modest webhook traffic.
Practical resources
Hosting guides commonly describe 4 GB of RAM as a practical target for a basic production installation. They repeatedly cite 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, and 20 GB of SSD storage as a minimum, but that minimum is not confirmed by a single official n8n sizing statement. Treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee that every workflow will run comfortably.
- CPU: two virtual CPUs are a commonly quoted floor; CPU demand rises with simultaneous executions, code nodes, transformations, and document processing.
- Memory: 4 GB gives a basic single instance more headroom than the frequently quoted 2 GB minimum.
- Storage: plan for at least 20 GB unless execution history and logs are pruned aggressively. Workflow definitions, database growth, Docker images, backups, and temporary files all consume disk space.
- Operating system: the n8n host guide uses Docker on Linux or macOS, or Docker through WSL on Windows. Docker Compose is recommended for production deployments that include a database.
PostgreSQL 13 or later is the recommended production database. SQLite can be adequate for a simple single process, but it is not supported when n8n is configured for distributed queue mode.
How workload changes the monthly cost
Light personal or small-team automation
A 2 vCPU, 4 GB VPS with 20–40 GB of disk is the usual budget case. At the reported prices, this is approximately $5–$20 per month before optional backups and external storage. It suits scheduled jobs, API integrations, and webhook volumes that do not require several executions to run in parallel.

Heavier workflows and large payloads
Guides recommend moving toward 8 GB of RAM and 4 vCPU when executions are highly parallel, workflows manipulate large payloads, or many containers run alongside n8n. The MassiveGrid example provides a reference point at 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB NVMe for $19.16 per month in the cited guide. Your actual requirement depends on workflow behavior, not on the number of workflows alone.
Queue mode with workers
Queue mode separates execution work from the main n8n process. A commonly cited layout contains PostgreSQL, Redis, the n8n main process, Docker, and two workers. One hosting guide estimates about 8 GB of RAM for that combination. The extra memory and services are why queue mode normally costs more than a single-process installation.

Queue mode requires Redis as the message broker and a database. Workers may run on separate machines if they can reach both Redis and the database, allowing you to add capacity without moving the main UI process. Each worker also needs its own task-runner sidecar container when task runners are enabled.
Architecture items that add to the bill
PostgreSQL
Production-style deployments should budget for PostgreSQL 13 or newer. You can run it on the same VPS for a small installation, but a separate database server increases isolation and usually increases cost. Database storage grows with execution history, so retention settings directly affect disk requirements.

Redis and worker machines
Redis is mandatory for queue mode. You can place Redis on the n8n VPS for a small deployment or use a separate managed or self-hosted service. Additional workers require additional CPU, memory, and often additional VPS instances. Keep the connection path between workers, Redis, and PostgreSQL reliable; queue failures are frequently connectivity or capacity problems rather than n8n workflow errors.
Binary data storage
Filesystem binary storage is not supported in queue mode. Persisted binary data must use S3-compatible external storage, which creates a separate storage and data-transfer charge. This matters for workflows that handle images, archives, audio, video, or document attachments. A text-only automation may avoid most of this expense.
Concurrency and database connections
n8n recommends a concurrency value of 5 or higher per worker. Setting concurrency too low while deploying many workers can exhaust the database connection pool, so adding workers is not automatically cheaper or faster. Size PostgreSQL connections and worker concurrency together, then watch queue latency and database saturation.
Webhook routing
In a worker architecture, do not put the main process in the webhook load-balancer pool. The main process handles the editor and coordination duties; sending webhook traffic to it can degrade UI responsiveness. Route webhook requests to the appropriate webhook or worker processes instead.

High availability
Multi-main high availability is available only with a self-hosted Enterprise licence. It also requires sticky sessions behind a load balancer. The licence, load balancer, multiple main instances, shared database, Redis, and operational monitoring can make an HA design substantially more expensive than a single VPS. It is a different budget category from a $5–$20 hobby or small-team server.
Managed hosting versus a raw VPS
A raw VPS has the lowest visible monthly price, but you administer Docker, PostgreSQL, upgrades, TLS, firewall rules, backups, monitoring, and recovery. The $4.51–$20 examples are therefore infrastructure prices, not a complete operating-cost estimate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A managed option such as the cited Elestio example was listed at about $17 per month for 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM. That price can trade server administration for a service fee, but the stated capacity is smaller than the 4 GB commonly recommended for a basic production setup. Confirm included backups, upgrade responsibility, storage limits, execution retention, support boundaries, and overage charges before treating a managed plan as equivalent to a raw 4 GB VPS.
- Choose a raw VPS when you are comfortable maintaining Linux, Docker, databases, backups, and security updates.
- Choose managed hosting when operator time is more expensive than the price difference and the provider’s included resources match your workload.
- Use separate services when database isolation, queue throughput, or recovery requirements justify paying for more than one machine.
A practical 2026 budgeting method
- Count execution patterns. List scheduled jobs, webhook bursts, long-running workflows, and any steps that process large files. Parallel and memory-heavy work matters more than the raw workflow count.
- Select the baseline. Start with 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, and at least 20 GB SSD for a basic single instance. Treat 2 GB RAM as a test-oriented floor rather than a production promise.
- Choose the database layout. PostgreSQL is the production choice. Running it on the same VPS lowers the bill; moving it elsewhere improves isolation but adds a service or server charge.
- Decide whether queue mode is necessary. If one process can handle your concurrency, avoid paying for Redis and workers. If you need parallel workers or independent scaling, budget for Redis, roughly 8 GB RAM for the cited two-worker layout, and task-runner sidecars.
- Estimate storage growth. Include the operating system, Docker images, PostgreSQL data, execution history, logs, and backups. Add S3-compatible storage when queue-mode workflows persist binary data.
- Add operations. Price backups, monitoring, alerting, TLS and domain services where applicable, plus the time needed for updates and incident recovery.
- Leave headroom. A server that runs at its memory limit can fail during a burst or database vacuum. Moving from 4 GB to 8 GB may cost less than repeated outages or emergency migrations.
Example monthly scenarios
| Scenario | Likely shape | Reported infrastructure range | Costs to add to the estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small single instance | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, PostgreSQL on the same VPS | About $5–$20 per month | Backups, administration time, and extra storage if history grows |
| Heavier single instance | Up to 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM for parallel or large-payload workflows | About $19.16 in the cited 8 GB example; provider prices vary | Backup storage, monitoring, and possible database separation |
| Queue-mode deployment | Main process, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, two workers, and task runners | Higher than a basic VPS; one guide targets about 8 GB RAM | Worker machines, Redis, external binary storage, and database capacity |
| Managed small instance | Provider-managed service with 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM in the cited example | About $17 per month | Plan limits, storage, backups, and support terms |
Self-hosting cost compared with n8n Cloud
One third-party source cites an n8n Cloud Pro price of $50 per month for 10,000 executions and 15 active workflows. That figure was not verified against the current n8n pricing page, so check the live offer before using it for a purchase decision. Cloud pricing can be easier to forecast because the provider handles the server, while self-hosting replaces part of the subscription with infrastructure and your own operating time.
For a fair comparison, place the VPS bill beside the value of setup, updates, backups, troubleshooting, security work, and downtime risk. A $10 server is not economically equivalent to a managed service if maintaining it consumes several hours every month or if a failed disk has no tested recovery path.

Common mistakes and fixes
Starting with too little memory
Symptom: containers are killed, executions stall, or the operating system swaps heavily. Fix: inspect container and host memory use, reduce simultaneous executions, prune old execution data, and move to a 4 GB or 8 GB plan as the workload requires.
Recommended Free Tools
Using SQLite for queue mode
Symptom: the distributed design cannot operate as intended. Fix: migrate to PostgreSQL 13 or later before enabling queue mode.
Forgetting binary-storage rules
Symptom: text workflows work but file-based executions fail or cannot persist data across workers. Fix: configure S3-compatible external storage for persisted binaries and include its recurring storage and transfer charges.
Adding workers without database planning
Symptom: more workers increase connection errors or queue delays. Fix: set worker concurrency deliberately, keep it at the recommended 5 or higher where appropriate, and size the PostgreSQL connection pool for the number of workers and executions.
Putting the main process behind webhook balancing
Symptom: the editor becomes sluggish during webhook bursts. Fix: keep the main process out of the webhook load-balancer pool and route incoming work to the designated webhook or worker processes.
Skipping recovery planning
Symptom: a VPS failure removes both n8n and its database. Fix: maintain tested backups of PostgreSQL, workflow credentials, encryption settings, and any external binary data; verify that a new host can be restored before relying on the system for critical automations.
Bottom line for 2026
Use $5–$20 per month as the planning range for one modest n8n instance on a 4 GB VPS, with PostgreSQL and at least 20 GB of storage. Expect a higher bill when you need 8 GB of RAM, 4 vCPU, queue mode, Redis, multiple workers, external binary storage, managed operations, or Enterprise high availability. Provider figures in this range are guide-based and can change, so verify current regional pricing and included backups before ordering. Most importantly, include the value of your own maintenance time: self-hosting lowers the infrastructure invoice, but it does not make n8n free to operate.
