How Much Does It Really Cost to Host a Website?

Hosting can start at a few dollars monthly, but renewal prices, plan inclusions, and add-ons determine what it really costs.

Website hosting can cost a few dollars per month at an introductory shared-hosting rate, but that is not necessarily the amount you will pay over time. The real budget depends on the hosting type, billing term, renewal price, and what the plan includes. Current provider examples range from low-cost shared hosting to more expensive managed WordPress and VPS plans; cloud bills depend on the resources you use. There is no supported universal market-wide average.

Current hosting prices: examples, not a market average

These dated provider listings illustrate how much prices can vary. They use different currencies, terms, and plan types, so compare each provider’s renewal rate and inclusions rather than treating the figures as equivalent quotes.

DreamHost Managed VPS Business, euro listing €13.75/month for the first year; €31.99/month at renewal Lists 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, daily automated backups, and unmetered bandwidth. DreamHost’s 2026 page was accessed October 4, 2026. DreamHost plan details
Namecheap Stellar shared hosting $2.28/month, or $26.88 annually Namecheap’s comparison page, updated July 16, 2026, also lists Stellar Plus at $2.98/month and Stellar Business at $4.98/month, with different storage and file allowances. These are provider-listed prices, not a neutral comparison. Namecheap plan details
Bluehost Starter shared hosting $11.99/month for a 12-month renewal term Bluehost’s renewal list was updated February 11, 2026. It lists different renewal prices for monthly, 12-month, and 36-month terms and says prices are subject to change. Bluehost renewal pricing
Amazon Lightsail entry Linux/Unix virtual server $5/month AWS lists a bundle with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. This is a self-managed virtual server, not a managed WordPress plan. Pricing was accessed October 4, 2026. Lightsail pricing

The examples show why an introductory rate alone can mislead: the amount may change at renewal, and each price represents a different service and set of inclusions. Prices and promotions can change, so verify the provider’s current terms before committing.

Why the hosting type changes the bill

Shared hosting

Shared hosting is positioned as a low-cost option for simpler sites. It can be a sensible starting point when you want a basic site and a plan that bundles common services. The relevant question is not only the starting price, but whether the plan’s storage, bandwidth, support, backups, and renewal cost suit your needs.

Managed WordPress

Managed WordPress plans add platform-specific service and typically cost more than an entry-level shared plan. Check exactly what management covers, including backup retention and support, rather than assuming every operational task is included.

VPS hosting

A virtual private server offers allocated resources, but a low server price does not automatically include the labor involved in setup, updates, security, backups, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Managed and self-managed VPS offers should not be compared as if they provide the same service.

Cloud hosting

Cloud pricing depends on selected resources and usage. Bundled plans can make some costs easier to understand, but storage, snapshots, databases, load balancers, and data transfer may be separate line items. For example, AWS lists Lightsail snapshot storage at $0.05 per GB-month, block storage at $0.10 per allocated GB-month, and load balancers at $18/month on pricing pages accessed October 4, 2026. What to check before comparing plans

  • Introductory and renewal rates: Record both prices and the billing periods they apply to. Compare the cost across the initial term and at least one renewal term, not just the checkout promotion. DreamHost says its plan cards show renewal prices alongside promotional prices. DreamHost plan details
  • Billing duration: A monthly price may depend on paying for a longer term in advance. Compare plans over the same period and note the amount due upfront.
  • Domain: Check how long any included domain registration lasts and what renewal costs. An included first-year domain is not the same as a permanently free domain.
  • Email, SSL, and backups: Confirm whether each is included, whether inclusion is temporary, and what backup frequency and retention the plan provides. DreamHost lists a three-month professional email trial on relevant plans; Namecheap lists SSL and backups among shared-plan features. DreamHost plan details and Namecheap plan details
  • Resources and limits: Check storage, bandwidth or data-transfer allowance, file limits, and any overage charges. For cloud services, include separate resources your design requires.
  • Support and management: Assess how much setup and maintenance you can handle yourself. Paying more for a managed service may reduce operational work, while a cheaper self-managed server leaves more responsibility with you.

How to calculate a realistic hosting budget

  1. Add the hosting charges across the period: Include the first-term total and the renewal-term total, using the provider’s actual billing durations.
  2. Add services not covered by the plan: Include domain renewal, paid email, SSL, backups, and any required add-ons. Do not assume these are extra if the plan includes them, or free if an inclusion expires.
  3. Estimate usage-based charges: For cloud hosting, account for resources such as extra storage, snapshots, databases, load balancers, and data-transfer charges that your architecture may need.
  4. Include one-time costs separately: Note any migration or setup charge without disguising it as a recurring monthly fee.
  5. Make a like-for-like monthly figure: Divide the total for the period by the number of months it covers, and keep the upfront payment and renewal date visible in your budget.

A useful calculation is: first-term hosting total + renewal-term hosting total + domain renewal + paid services or add-ons + expected usage charges. Plan inclusions differ: some provider plans list items such as SSL, backups, bandwidth, or a first-year domain, while cloud resources may be priced separately. Read the current plan terms for each candidate.

How to interpret broad cost ranges

One third-party guide, Website Cost Estimator, gives these indicative ranges: shared hosting $3–$15/month, managed WordPress $25–$100/month, VPS $20–$80/month, dedicated servers $80–$300/month, and cloud $50–$500/month. These are the publisher’s planning estimates from April 2026, not an authoritative market average; the guide advises verifying provider pricing. Use them only for rough orientation, not as a quote or a substitute for current plan terms. Website Cost Estimator

No independent industry-wide statistic establishing an average hosting cost is established by the cited sources. The provider prices above are individual offers, not evidence of what every website owner pays.
