Site Isolation and disabling JavaScript address different risks, so one is not a substitute for the other. Site Isolation separates sites into renderer processes and limits some cross-site data exposure. Disabling JavaScript stops pages from running scripts, which can reduce some script-driven activity but also breaks many sites. For most people, leave the browser’s built-in Site Isolation at its default; if you want to restrict scripts, do so selectively where possible.
What each setting changes
Site Isolation separates sites into processes
Browsers use the Same-Origin Policy to restrict one site from reading another site’s data. Site Isolation adds a process boundary: pages from different sites run in separate renderer processes. In Chrome, Cross-Origin Read Blocking (CORB) also aims to keep certain cross-origin HTML, XML, and JSON responses out of a renderer that should not receive them. These measures add protection if a renderer is compromised or a browser enforcement bug undermines ordinary site boundaries; they do not guarantee complete containment or replace the browser sandbox. JavaScript blocking stops page scripts
Disabling JavaScript prevents ordinary client-side scripts from executing on pages. That can stop some script-based behaviors and trackers, but it does not create a separate process boundary, block every kind of web content, or close every route for an attack. It also stops legitimate scripts that provide functions such as interactive controls or application logic.
The term can be confusing in Firefox administration: Mozilla’s DisableJit policy turns off JavaScript just-in-time compilation for a site; it does not turn off JavaScript itself. Mozilla warns that sites may become slower or break under that policy, and WebAssembly will not run. See the Firefox administrator reference.

The comparison is not a choice between mutually exclusive protections: a browser can use Site Isolation while scripts are restricted.
How much do the performance costs matter?
Site Isolation’s overhead depends on platform and workload
More renderer processes can increase memory use, and Chrome documentation notes possible latency on cross-site navigations. Parallel rendering can help some frames, so the effect is not simply a slowdown in every case. Historical figures illustrate why a single percentage should not be treated as a current expectation: Chromium reported about 10–13% additional memory for Chrome 67 desktop when all sites were isolated with many tabs open, and about 3–5% for Chrome 77 Android when isolating sites users log into. Both are version- and configuration-specific figures, not current universal benchmarks. Blocking every script has substantial compatibility costs
A 2023 study by Abdul Haddi Amjad, Zubair Shafiq, and Muhammad Ali Gulzar evaluated 100,000 websites. Blocking all scripts significantly degraded functionality on approximately two-thirds of the tested sites. The study also classified approximately 15% of scripts as “mixed”: they combined tracking with legitimate functions, so blocking them could break features. Its results describe the study’s evaluation, not a guarantee about every browser, extension, or site.
The same study found that blocking a subset of JavaScript methods reduced major breakage by 3.8 times while providing the same tracking-prevention level in its evaluation. That is evidence for the potential of finer-grained approaches, not a promise that a particular tool will deliver the same result. What to leave enabled, and when to restrict scripts
For most users, keep the built-in isolation default
Google’s managed Chrome documentation says Site Isolation is enabled by default on desktop from Chrome 76. On Android, it says isolation applies to most sites users log into from Chrome 77; Chromium’s security overview describes the original logged-in-site behavior as intended for devices with at least 2 GB of RAM, with expansion for some site types in Chrome 92. These are version-specific statements, not a promise that every current device or site is isolated in the same way. Google says most users do not need to take action. Check current browser documentation for the implementation on your platform and version. See Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education guidance.
Use script restrictions when you accept the tradeoff
If your goal is to reduce script-driven tracking or behavior, a site-specific or selective restriction can be easier to live with than disabling JavaScript everywhere. You may still encounter breakage, especially where a script combines a site feature with tracking. If a page stops working, you can narrow or remove the restriction for that site rather than abandoning the browser’s process isolation.

Administrators have separate policy controls
Chrome administrators can require Site Isolation or isolate selected origins using policies documented by Google, including SitePerProcess and IsolateOrigins. Firefox’s site policies include controls such as DisableJit, DisableServiceWorkers, and HttpsOnly; these change distinct browser behaviors and should not be confused with a general JavaScript-off switch. Consult the relevant Chrome management documentation or Firefox policy reference before deploying policies across managed devices.
