Short answer: Owncast is free, open-source software, but running it costs whatever you pay for a VPS and any optional video storage or delivery. A current DigitalOcean price illustration starts at $4 per month for a Droplet; that is a server-price floor, not proof that the smallest plan can handle your stream. The total depends mainly on encoding, bitrate, stream hours, concurrent viewers, and the server’s region. Also, Owncast is a self-hosted streaming server—not a YouTube hosting product. If your goal is simply to keep prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different, cloud-based option.
What “for YouTube” means with Owncast
Owncast describes itself as a self-hosted live video streaming and chat server. Its software is open source, so the recurring cost is infrastructure: typically a VPS, outbound data transfer, and possibly separate object storage. Owncast is not a YouTube hosting service. Whether and how to use Owncast alongside YouTube depends on your streaming workflow; do not assume that paying for an Owncast VPS itself provides a YouTube stream.

There is no universal monthly total. Owncast’s requirements guide says, “It is impossible to give a single answer about what the requirements are for you to run Owncast, or what it will cost.” The practical way to estimate your bill is to size the server for encoding, calculate viewer traffic, and compare that traffic with the selected plan’s allowance and overage terms.

| DigitalOcean offering | Advertised price and listed configuration | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Shared CPU Droplets | From $4/month | A low starting price for a VPS; it does not establish that this plan has enough CPU, memory, or transfer for your workload. |
| Premium shared CPU | Starts at $7/month for 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GB NVMe, and 1,000 GB transfer | A more specific entry configuration to compare against your encoding needs and estimated traffic. |
| CPU-Optimized Droplets | From $42/month | A higher advertised starting point to consider when encoding requires more CPU; it is not an Owncast minimum. |

What drives the monthly bill
CPU: whether the server transcodes
Owncast uses CPU to transcode a stream into output qualities. Producing more qualities or using more demanding compression increases encoding work. Passthrough uses minimal CPU, but it does not remove the bandwidth cost of serving viewers. The actual load depends on the codec, bitrate, resolution, encoding preset, and host hardware, so Owncast’s rough examples are not guarantees for a particular VPS.

Outbound traffic: bitrate, hours, and viewers
If the VPS sends video directly to viewers, traffic grows with stream bitrate, duration, and audience size. Monthly transfer allowance and sustained network throughput are separate checks: having enough monthly gigabytes does not by itself guarantee adequate live delivery speed.
Region and overage terms
Included traffic varies by provider, plan, and location. Hetzner’s traffic documentation, accessed in 2026, lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX, and CAX cloud plans, compared with 1–5 TB for US locations and 0.5–5 TB for Singapore, depending on plan. The page also lists an overage charge for some products. Verify the exact selected plan and region at Hetzner’s traffic documentation; do not apply one location’s allowance to another.

Optional object storage
Owncast can use an S3-compatible storage provider to serve video to viewers, shifting viewer-facing traffic away from the VPS. That moves rather than eliminates cost: storage and delivery charges depend on the other provider’s terms. It is not established that this design is always cheaper, so compare both providers’ charges for your expected use.
Your broadcaster’s internet connection
The connection sending the stream to the VPS is separate from the VPS bill. Owncast recommends wired Ethernet and says broadcaster upload should be at least 1.5 times the streaming bitrate to allow for fluctuations and overhead. For a 5,000 kbps stream, its guide gives 7.5 Mbps as the target. This is upload capacity at the broadcaster’s end, not server-to-viewer egress.

Estimate traffic before choosing a plan
Owncast’s requirements guide gives this estimate:
(bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers) ÷ 8,000,000 = GB

Its published estimates for a two-hour stream are:
| Bitrate | 10 viewers | 25 viewers | 50 viewers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 kbps | 18 GB | 45 GB | 90 GB |
| 4,000 kbps | 36 GB | 90 GB | 180 GB |
| 6,000 kbps | 54 GB | 135 GB | 270 GB |
These are Owncast’s traffic estimates, not provider prices. Multiply the estimate by the number of events per month, then compare it with the transfer allowance for your chosen plan and region. For example, four two-hour events at 4,000 kbps and 25 concurrent viewers come to 360 GB by this formula (90 GB × 4). That is an arithmetic estimate, not a measured bill.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Check peak throughput too
Owncast’s peak outbound estimate is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. Its guide says most VPS providers offer 1 Gbps ports and estimates roughly 200 viewers at 5,000 kbps on such a port. Treat that as a rough guide: check the actual plan’s network limits and allow for overhead. Server location also matters because distance between the server and viewers can contribute to buffering.
How to think about the cost by workload
- Testing or a very small audience: Use the advertised $4/month DigitalOcean starting price only as a server-cost floor. It does not confirm that the plan can handle your chosen encoding or audience.
- Light production with passthrough or one output: Compare a shared CPU plan’s processor, memory, and included transfer with your bitrate, event hours, and expected concurrency. Passthrough uses minimal CPU, but viewer traffic still counts.
- Several output qualities or heavier encoding: Allow for more CPU headroom and test the specific configuration. DigitalOcean’s $42/month CPU-optimized starting price is a provider price anchor, not a minimum imposed by Owncast.
- Growing audience or limited VPS transfer: Compare direct delivery from the VPS with an object-storage design, including that provider’s storage and delivery charges.
When comparing plans, check monthly base price, vCPU type and memory, included outbound transfer for the exact region, sustained port speed, overage rate, and location relative to both broadcaster and audience. Add object-storage charges separately if you use that approach.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded video that stays live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate option from running Owncast: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
