Measure the PC’s average power draw at the wall while it is streaming, multiply by the hours it runs, then apply the marginal electricity rate that applies to your household. The PC’s power-supply rating is not its actual consumption, and your location, tariff slab, subsidy and streaming duration all affect the bill.
Calculate the stream’s electricity use and cost
Use these formulas for the PC itself:
Energy (kWh) = average PC draw (W) × stream hours ÷ 1,000

Estimated energy cost (₹) = energy (kWh) × applicable marginal tariff (₹/kWh)
For a continuous stream, use the actual hours in the billing period; 24 hours × the number of days is a reasonable duration input if it runs without interruption. To calculate a monthly estimate, multiply the PC’s average watts by the hours it will run that month, divide by 1,000, and multiply by your applicable marginal rate.

For example, leave your own measured wattage and bill rate in this calculation: (W ÷ 1,000) × hours × ₹/kWh. Without those inputs, a specific rupee figure would be a guess.
Measure the PC while it is actually streaming
The useful number is the whole PC’s average wall-side draw under the OBS settings and scene you intend to use—not the maximum wattage printed on the power supply or the rated draw of an individual component. A plug-in electricity usage meter can measure consumption at the outlet. Choose one suitable for your outlet and electrical rating; no particular meter model is established here.

- Set up the intended loop. Use the resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene and other OBS settings you plan to run. A different workload may draw different power.
- Connect a suitable meter. Measure the PC at the wall. If you want the complete setup’s electricity use, include the other equipment you intend to count, such as a monitor, router, capture device or audio equipment.
- Run the stream for a representative period. Record the average watts, or record the kWh consumed over that period. Avoid estimating from a brief idle reading if the PC will be encoding and streaming continuously.
- Scale the reading to your schedule. With a watt reading, use the formula above. With a kWh reading, multiply the measured kWh by the number of equivalent periods in your planned run, then price those units using your applicable marginal rate.
State what your estimate covers: PC alone or the complete streaming setup. Add peripherals only if they are within the scope you want to estimate.

Retail electricity tariffs in India are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize eligible consumer classes, according to the Ministry of Power / PIB statement of 10 August 2026. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation is a national reference for state and category context. Check your current bill and the latest tariff order from your regulator or distribution company for the rate that applies to you.

Some schedules charge energy in slabs, so the stream’s extra units may be billed at a different marginal rate from units earlier in the month. For example, Chhattisgarh’s FY 2026–27 schedule describes domestic energy charges as telescopic and notes that eligible domestic consumers may receive a state subsidy; it is a location-specific example, not an India-wide rate. See the CSERC schedule. Lakshadweep’s FY 2026–27 tariff page also lists different domestic energy charges across consumption bands: Department of Electricity tariff schedule.
For an incremental estimate, apply the marginal slab rate to the additional units used by the stream. Fixed charges, duties, subsidies and time-of-day rules can affect the final bill. Do not automatically add the entire household fixed charge to the stream’s cost; it is a bill-level charge, not necessarily an incremental cost caused by streaming.

Why OBS settings matter to the estimate
Power draw depends on the PC and the work it is doing. OBS workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee adequate streaming or recording performance. OBS Studio system requirements. That is another reason to measure the PC with the intended loop and settings rather than assign a universal wattage to an “OBS stream.”
