In a 30-day month, a continuous 5-watt load uses 3.6 kWh; 10 watts uses 7.2 kWh. Those are example calculations, not measured results for a Raspberry Pi 5 running FFmpeg.
Estimate the monthly electricity cost
Use this formula for a 30-day month:
Monthly electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 hours × your marginal price per kWh

For other periods, replace 720 with the actual number of streaming hours. The marginal rate is the per-kWh charge that applies to additional consumption on your bill; taxes, fixed charges and other billing rules may affect the final total.
| Average wall draw | Energy in 30 days at 24 hours/day | Cost calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 5 W | 3.6 kWh | 3.6 × your price per kWh |
| 10 W | 7.2 kWh | 7.2 × your price per kWh |
For a 365-day year, the same continuous loads use 43.8 kWh at 5 W or 87.6 kWh at 10 W. To turn any of these energy amounts into money, use your local electricity rate; without your location and tariff, a currency estimate would be misleading.

Why the Pi 5 power-supply rating is not its electricity use
Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for the Pi 5, but that rating is the supply’s capacity, not a claim that the computer continuously draws 27 W. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation gives 800 mA as typical active current consumption for the bare board and notes that peripherals change power demand. It also says a 3 A supply limits downstream USB current to 600 mA. See Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation and setup guidance.
Raspberry Pi’s 2023 launch article says consumption can reach around 12 W under the most intensive, pathological workloads. That is a peak reference for extreme workloads, not an expected average for FFmpeg streaming. The article also describes the optional Active Cooler for uncased operation under continuous heavy load; cooling should be chosen for the workload and setup, not assumed to reduce electricity use. See Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 launch article.

Measure your actual streaming setup
The most useful estimate comes from measuring the complete setup while it is doing the work. A plug-in energy monitor at the wall captures the board, power-supply conversion losses, fan, storage and attached devices together.

- Connect the assembled Pi 5 setup through a plug-in energy monitor.
- Run the actual FFmpeg stream, including the resolution, frame rate, encoding workload and peripherals you plan to use.
- Record energy over a representative period. A longer interval is preferable if encoding load or fan activity varies.
- If the monitor reports average watts, multiply by streaming hours and divide by 1,000 to calculate kWh. If it reports accumulated kWh directly, use that reading for the measured interval and scale only when the interval is representative.
- Multiply the resulting kWh by your applicable marginal energy rate.
The 800 mA bare-board typical active-current figure and the around-12 W intensive-workload peak are reference points, not substitutes for measuring your assembled system. Your actual FFmpeg command, storage, cooling and peripherals determine the result.

Include network costs separately
Resolution and bitrate affect the sustained upload capacity and data transfer needed for a stream; they do not directly determine the Pi’s electricity bill. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. For 30 fps, it lists 2–6 Mbps for 720p and 4–10 Mbps for 1080p. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and make sure your connection can sustain the chosen upload rate.
Any data-cap overage or network charge depends on your ISP plan, so check that contract separately from your power bill. No universal data cost follows from the video settings alone.
