There is no universal cheaper option. Cloud APIs charge according to the model and how much you use, while local inference adds hardware, electricity, setup, and upkeep. Local use can be economical if you already own suitable hardware or keep a new system busy enough—but the fair comparison is the cost of producing equally useful results, not a GPU’s power bill versus an API’s token rate.
What determines the cost?
The answer depends on the workload and what counts as an equivalent result. Compare the same kind of task, expected quality, context length, and output volume. A small model that runs locally may cost less but may not match a cloud model’s quality or supported features.

- Cloud API: model-specific input and output token rates, plus any applicable charges for tools or other features. Batch processing, caching, and service modes can change the bill.
- Local inference: hardware purchase cost, electricity, any cooling or hosting, setup and maintenance, and how much useful work the system performs during its life.
For a cloud estimate, multiply expected input tokens by the input rate and expected output tokens by the output rate, then add relevant service charges and apply any eligible discounts. For a local estimate, spread hardware cost across its realistic useful life and the work it actually completes, then add electricity and other operating costs. NVIDIA describes the hourly cost for on-premise deployments as the effective cost derived from amortizing owned infrastructure, rather than treating owned hardware as free.
How much do cloud APIs cost?
Rates vary by provider, model, and service mode, and can change. Check the live price table for the exact model and effective date before estimating a bill.

Token rates and service options
Google’s Gemini Developer API pricing lists model- and mode-specific rates, free and paid tiers, batch, flex and priority modes, caching, and scheduled price changes. The table returned on October 7, 2026 listed Gemini 3 Flash Preview at $0.50 per million input tokens and $3 per million output tokens in its displayed schedule. These are not rates for every Gemini model or mode; verify the live table and its effective date.
Anthropic says its Batch API offers a 50% discount on both input and output tokens. The applicable rate remains model-specific, so check the provider’s current pricing table before calculating.

What belongs in the API estimate?
- Estimate input and output tokens separately; they can have different rates.
- Account for caching, batch or other modes only if they apply to your workload.
- Add relevant tool or other non-token charges rather than assuming the token calculation covers everything.
- Use the provider’s price for the specific model you need, not a headline rate for a different model.
What does local inference cost?
Electricity is only one part of local inference cost. A complete estimate includes the system’s purchase price and useful life, energy use, cooling or hosting if applicable, and the time and effort spent setting it up and maintaining it. Utilization matters: hardware that sits idle spreads its purchase cost over fewer completed tasks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEstimate the full cost
- Choose a comparable model and workload. Set the task, quality target, context length, and expected input and output volume.
- Account for hardware. Include the purchase price and allocate it over a realistic useful life and the work the system will actually perform.
- Estimate energy and hosting. Use the system’s power draw, expected operating time, and your electricity rate; add cooling or hosting costs where relevant.
- Include operations. Factor in setup, software and hardware upkeep, and the time needed to keep the system working.
- Check throughput. Estimate how many useful outputs the system can deliver in the time available, rather than comparing electricity expense alone.
If you already own a capable machine, it is useful to show two figures: the marginal running cost of doing additional work on it, and the fully loaded cost that also allocates part of the hardware purchase price. The first helps answer “what will this extra workload cost me?”; the second helps compare local inference with a cloud service over time.

Why GPU-hour prices can mislead
A low hourly expense does not necessarily mean a low cost per useful result. A slower system can take longer to complete a task, and its output may not meet the same quality target. NVIDIA’s vendor-produced comparison reports $4.20 per million tokens for an H200-based Hopper system and $0.12 per million for a GB300 NVL72 Blackwell system, using assumed GPU hourly costs of $1.41 and $2.65 respectively. Those figures apply to the configurations and workloads described on NVIDIA’s page, not to local inference in general. NVIDIA also emphasizes throughput as a key factor in token cost.
Is local inference cheaper than an API?
It can be, but only for a particular combination of workload, model, hardware, utilization, and local energy or hosting prices. Existing hardware can make the additional running cost look low, while a new purchase must be amortized over the work it will actually do. Higher utilization spreads that purchase cost across more outputs; low utilization does not.

The available figures do not establish a universal monthly cost or break-even token count. To find a useful break-even point for your situation, compare the local and API estimates for the same workload, quality target, and expected output volume. Recalculate if the model, token mix, service mode, hardware, energy price, or workload changes.

What do published energy and infrastructure figures tell you?
Published figures can provide context, but they are not interchangeable benchmarks for a home computer, every cloud API, or every local model.
- Google service estimate: Google Cloud reported that a median Gemini Apps text prompt used 0.24 Wh, 0.03 gCO₂e, and 0.26 mL of water in its 2025 methodology. It also reported a narrower accelerator-only estimate of 0.10 Wh, 0.02 gCO₂e, and 0.12 mL, and cautioned that this narrower figure understates the full operational footprint. These estimates describe Google’s Gemini Apps prompts and methodology, not a universal API or local-model benchmark. See Google Cloud’s August 21, 2025 explanation.
- Large-scale H100 scenario: The OECD’s 2026 discussion assumes about 700 W for one H100 at full capacity, with up to another 700 W for cooling, RAM, and CPU. Using an average European electricity assumption of about USD 0.25/kWh and PUE around 1.3, it estimates electricity at about USD 300 per month per H100, and assumes colocation at approximately USD 1,200 per H100 GPU per month. These are scenario assumptions for large-scale infrastructure, not a consumer-PC estimate or a current quote for every provider.
What else should you compare?
A cost comparison is meaningful only if both options are usable for the job. Consider these factors alongside dollars:
- Capability and quality: A locally runnable open-weight model may not match a selected cloud model’s quality, context handling, or modality support.
- Latency and throughput: One option may respond faster, while another may handle more work over time.
- Memory and hardware requirements: The model must fit and run acceptably on the local system.
- Privacy and data handling: Local processing changes where computation occurs, but it does not by itself guarantee privacy; the entire setup and its data flows matter.
- Uptime and offline availability: Cloud access depends on service availability and connectivity; a local setup has its own hardware and maintenance dependencies.
- Operational effort: Include the time and expertise needed to install, update, monitor, and troubleshoot local inference.
A practical way to decide
- Write down the workload: task, quality requirement, context length, and expected input/output volume.
- Select the cloud model and local model that can plausibly meet that requirement.
- Calculate API spend using current model-specific rates, the input/output mix, and applicable discounts or other charges.
- Calculate local cost with hardware amortization, electricity, cooling or hosting, utilization, and maintenance.
- Compare cost per useful output, then weigh latency, privacy, uptime, capability, and operational effort.
If the local model cannot produce results that meet the same requirement, its lower cost is not a like-for-like saving. If it can, the comparison should still reflect how much the system is used and the full cost of keeping it productive.
