You can live stream on YouTube for no added equipment or software cost if you already have a suitable phone, computer or console, an internet connection, and access to YouTube Live. The actual cost depends on what you own, what you plan to stream, and whether you choose optional upgrades or paid services. There is no single required YouTube streaming fee or universal setup price.
What determines the cost?
Separate the costs into five categories: YouTube and streaming software, equipment, internet, electricity, and optional production or cloud services. Some may already be covered by things you own or pay for anyway; others depend on your location and setup.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Platform and software: YouTube supports several ways to go live, and OBS Studio is free. You do not need to buy a paid streaming program just to broadcast.
- Equipment: A phone, built-in webcam, headset microphone, or console may be enough. A separate camera, microphone, lights, or capture device is an upgrade only when your chosen workflow or a specific limitation calls for it.
- Internet: Your stream needs reliable upload capacity. Your internet subscription price, data limits, and any extra charges are set by your provider and location.
- Electricity: Running a computer, lights, or other equipment uses power, but the cost depends on the devices, duration, and local electricity rate.
- Optional services: A paid service may be useful for a specific workflow, such as keeping prerecorded videos streaming continuously from the cloud. It is not a requirement for ordinary live broadcasting.
Which streaming method fits the equipment you own?
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and game console as streaming methods. Choose based on your source and workflow rather than starting with a shopping list. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16 years old. Check the YouTube live-streaming help page for current eligibility and setup details.
| Route | What you may already have | When an extra purchase could make sense |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A suitable phone and its built-in camera and microphone | If a particular need—such as better audio, a tripod, or lighting—cannot be met by what you have |
| Webcam | A computer with a built-in or existing webcam | If the built-in camera or microphone is inadequate for your intended stream |
| Encoder | A computer and streaming software such as OBS Studio | If the source or production requires extra camera, audio, lighting, or capture equipment |
| Game console | A supported console and the streaming options available for your setup | Only if your chosen console-to-stream workflow actually requires additional hardware; YouTube’s method list does not make a capture card a universal requirement |
For a computer-based talking-head stream, a separate webcam or microphone can improve picture or sound, but neither is automatically required: YouTube’s webcam route calls for a computer with a webcam. For gameplay or console content, confirm how your specific source will reach YouTube before buying capture equipment.

Can you stream for free?
Often, yes. If you already have an appropriate device and internet access, you can start without buying streaming equipment. OBS Project describes OBS as free, open-source software; its help page says it has no watermark or use limitations and allows commercial use. See the OBS Project’s licensing and cost explanation.
“Free” here means no required purchase of a streaming app or new gear in that scenario. It does not mean internet access, electricity, or optional equipment has no cost. Test your existing camera, microphone, device, and connection before spending money; buy an upgrade to solve an identified problem.

What do example equipment budgets look like?
A March 2026 guide from StreamerW estimates about $150 for a starter set of peripherals and about $280 for its best-value setup. Both examples assume you already own a capable computer; they are not prices for a complete computer build or a universal YouTube setup. Retail prices vary with country, retailer, tax, product availability, and new or used condition, and can change over time. See StreamerW’s setup-cost guide for the examples.
| Example | Published estimate | What the estimate does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Starter peripherals | About $150 (StreamerW, 2026) | A complete setup including a computer, internet, electricity, or recurring service costs |
| Best-value peripherals | About $280 (StreamerW, 2026) | A price that applies across countries, retailers, or creators’ needs |
These are dated examples, not required spending targets or market-wide averages. If you need better image or sound, address the weak point: for example, consider a webcam only if your existing camera is not adequate, or a microphone only if your existing audio is not doing the job. A professional event may also need multiple cameras, audio inputs, lighting, operators, and connectivity, but its price depends on the event and cannot be inferred from a starter gear list; request a production quote.

How much internet speed does a YouTube stream need?
Upload bandwidth affects whether a stream can be sent reliably; it is separate from your internet plan’s price and any data charges. YouTube advises creators to test upload speed and stream health, then choose settings that remain reliable on their connection. Its encoder guidance recommends a 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps and gives a maximum of 6 Mbps for that setting. It also recommends RTMPS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates.
Bitrate is the encoded data rate of the stream, not the internet subscription speed you should buy. Leave room for other household traffic and connection variation, and test the exact settings you intend to use. A setting that works on a speed test alone may still fail if the connection is unstable or shared.

What should you budget for a 24/7 prerecorded stream?
A continuous stream of uploaded videos is a different workflow from going live with a phone or camera. A computer-based setup must keep its streaming software and connection running; a cloud service can run the loop without leaving your home computer on. If you are weighing that route, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the videos looping from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.

Copyright, archives, and monetization costs
Equipment spending does not grant rights to use music, video, or other material in a stream. Check that you have permission to broadcast and archive everything in your playlist or live production, and review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and copyright rules before going live. Reused or copyrighted material can affect a channel independently of how much its setup cost.
YouTube’s August 12, 2026 article says qualified watch hours include public archived livestreams and exclude livestreams that are not archived. That is an eligibility-accounting detail, not a promise of monetization or income, and it does not offset gear costs by itself. See YouTube’s monetization update for the stated rule.
Common cost-planning mistakes
- Buying everything before testing: First check your built-in camera and microphone, streaming route, and connection. Purchase only what addresses a real shortcoming.
- Treating an encoder bitrate as an internet plan price: The bitrate is a stream setting. Broadband cost and available upload capacity depend on the provider and location.
- Assuming every console stream needs a capture card: Confirm the specific source and workflow first; YouTube’s supported-method list does not establish that as a universal requirement.
- Adding unrelated totals: A peripheral estimate does not include an unspecified computer, broadband plan, electricity bill, or cloud service. Price those separately for your situation.
- Counting on revenue to repay purchases: Monetization eligibility is not guaranteed income, and a public archive rule does not predict earnings.
Or let it run in the cloud
