But there is no single monthly budget that fits every move: city, neighborhood, household, housing standard, and transport choices can change the result substantially. The figures below are country-level examples, not a quote for an individual household.
How to read the comparison
The price examples are from Numbeo’s Mexico–United States country comparison, last updated 2 October 2026. They are contributor-submitted observations, shown in Mexican pesos with the page’s US-dollar equivalents—not official price statistics or a custom household budget. The page reported 752 Mexico contributors and 8,414 US contributors over the previous 12 months. Numbeo advises that “for major cities in these countries you get more relevant data by specifying cities.” Numbeo’s country comparison

Housing, services, and family costs
Rent is among the clearest differences in this comparison. The figures are monthly listings for the specified apartment type, rather than a prediction for a particular neighborhood or standard of housing.

| Expense | Mexico | United States |
|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom apartment, city centre, monthly | Mex$12,975.59 (US$711.60) | Mex$29,984.37 (US$1,644.39) |

| Three-bedroom apartment, city centre, monthly | Mex$24,475.67 (US$1,342.29) | Mex$48,478.85 (US$2,658.66) |
| Basic utilities for a 915-square-foot apartment | Mex$1,272.49 (US$69.79) | Mex$3,961.71 (US$217.27) |
| Broadband, unlimited data, 60 Mbps or higher | Mex$530.11 (US$29.07) | Mex$1,340.53 (US$73.52) |
| Private full-day preschool, monthly | Mex$4,738.32 (US$259.86) | Mex$26,682.66 (US$1,463.32) |
| International primary school tuition, annual | Mex$113,815.38 (US$6,241.83) | Mex$464,701.27 (US$25,485.01) |
Utilities depend on actual consumption and climate, while the childcare and tuition rows describe particular private-service categories. They do not represent every public or private option. Compare equivalent housing and services in the specific locations you have in mind.
Food and transportation are not uniformly cheaper
The comparison lists lower prices in Mexico for an inexpensive restaurant meal (Mex$200, or US$10.97, versus Mex$364.69, or US$20) and a mid-range meal for two (Mex$800, or US$43.87, versus Mex$1,458.74, or US$80). Grocery prices vary by item: rice, eggs, chicken, and tomatoes are listed lower in Mexico, while milk is higher and bananas are close to equal. Some internationally branded clothing and shoes are similar in price or higher in Mexico. A household’s cooking habits and purchases of imported or branded products matter.

Public transport examples favor Mexico, but car-related costs do not all follow the same pattern.

| Taxi fare per mile | Listed higher in Mexico; price not stated in the comparison summary | Listed lower in the comparison; price not stated in the comparison summary |
The fare direction comes from Numbeo’s comparison; specific gasoline and taxi amounts are not included here. A transit-oriented routine and a car-dependent commute can therefore produce very different comparisons.

Prices need to be considered alongside income
Numbeo lists average monthly net salary after tax at Mex$14,207.20 (US$779.15) in Mexico and Mex$78,703.99 (US$4,316.26) in the United States. These are broad comparison-page estimates, not a likely salary for any individual. Lower prices do not automatically mean that a cost is equally affordable on local earnings.
As wider economic context, the World Bank reports 2025 GDP per capita of US$13,889.234 for Mexico and US$90,026.516 for the United States, with 2025 consumer-price inflation of 3.8% and 2.9%, respectively. GDP per capita is not household income or a personal cost-of-living measure, so it should not be used to calculate an individual budget. World Bank GDP per capita data and World Bank inflation data
