If a starter is officially inactive and has not locked in your fantasy lineup, move an eligible bench player into the open active slot, save the change, and confirm it before kickoff. A player sitting on your bench does not count toward your team total; the replacement must occupy an active slot.
Replace the inactive player before the applicable lineup lock
-
Open your team’s lineup or roster page and find the inactive starter. Check the player’s scheduled kickoff and the lock time displayed by your fantasy platform.

-
Choose an eligible player already on your bench who can fill the vacated position under your league’s roster rules. If that player cannot fill the slot directly, check whether an eligible flex slot is available.

Apply the swap and make sure the replacement appears in an active slot. In Yahoo’s documented workflow, turn on Swap Mode, select the position being replaced, then select a highlighted position: Yahoo Fantasy roster and lineup changes.

Save or confirm the change, then check the lineup again before the player’s game begins. Do not assume that selecting a replacement automatically completed the transaction.
Check the lock time for your platform and league
An official inactive designation and a fantasy lineup lock are separate events. A player may be ruled inactive before kickoff, but you can replace them only if your lineup is still editable under the rules for your platform and league.

There is no universal deadline. ESPN documents settings that allow changes until each player’s scheduled game time, as well as settings that lock roster moves when the first game of the week or day begins; its guidance was updated April 10, 2025: ESPN roster settings and lock options. Yahoo says daily lineup changes in applicable leagues can be made until the player’s scheduled real-life game starts, while weekly roster settings use the first game on the designated day: Yahoo Fantasy roster and lineup changes. NFL Fantasy’s 2025 rules say a player’s status may be changed before their NFL team is scheduled to start, according to NFL.com’s clock: NFL Fantasy 2025 rules.

Choose a suitable bench replacement
Start with players already on your roster; swapping a bench player into your lineup is different from adding a free agent, which may involve separate waiver, add/drop, or transaction rules. Among eligible bench options, compare current game status, expected role and opportunity, matchup, and your league’s scoring. Check that the replacement’s own game has not started and that they are not also listed as inactive.
When automatic substitution is available
NFL Fantasy offers an optional setting called Auto-Swap Inactives. NFL Support says NFL teams designate players inactive “about 90 minutes” before a scheduled game, and that the feature swaps a starter projected for zero points with the highest-ranked player on the manager’s Backups list: NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives. NFL Support describes it this way: “Auto-Swap is a setting you can activate to automatically swap out an injured starter for someone on your bench.”
This is an NFL Fantasy feature, not a universal function across fantasy platforms. If you use it, set and rank your backups in advance; continue to monitor injury news and lock times rather than relying on an automatic move to cover every situation.
If the player is already locked
Once a player or roster is locked, the available remedy depends on the platform and league rules. Check whether the lineup page still allows a change and consult your league’s settings or commissioner if the platform blocks it. Do not assume that a commissioner can override a lock or that a post-kickoff correction will be allowed.
