For a small Discord bot that must stay online, plan on about $5–$10 per month in 2026. A specialist host advertises an entry price of $4.99 per month. Comparable small workloads are estimated at $4.09 on Fly.io, $5 on DigitalOcean App Platform, $6 on a DigitalOcean Droplet, $7 on Railway, $7 on Heroku, $9.25 on Render and $14.09 on Hetzner Cloud. Those figures are planning estimates rather than guaranteed invoices: runtime, bandwidth, storage, databases, taxes, credits and region can change the amount you pay.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What you are paying for
Discord bot hosting is the server time, memory, networking and supporting services needed to run your bot process continuously. The code may be free, but a computer still has to execute it, keep a network connection available and restart it after failures. Most hosts divide the bill into some combination of compute, workspace or management fees, bandwidth, storage and data services.

A production bot that responds around the clock consumes a recurring allocation, even when it receives few commands. That always-on requirement is why a realistic hobby budget is higher than the headline price of a free tier.
2026 price snapshots for a small bot
The following figures use the same planning workload wherever a comparison is available: one small bot using approximately 0.5 vCPU and 512 MB of memory, with low traffic. The cross-provider figures were checked on 29 September 2026 and are estimates for a hobby API-style deployment, not promises of a fixed bill.

| Hetzner Cloud | $14.09 estimate | 0.5-vCPU/512-MB hobby workload | Estimate checked 29 September 2026; region, taxes and attached services affect the invoice. |
These numbers are best used to set a budget and compare deployment styles. They are not interchangeable plan names: one provider may charge for an application process, another for a virtual machine, and another for measured CPU-seconds, memory and network traffic.
Render’s current resource examples
Render’s current pricing table illustrates how memory and CPU selection changes a recurring bill. For the smallest listed application sizes, it shows:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Render compute size | Listed monthly price | Workload implication |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 1 CPU, 256 MB RAM | $6/month | Suitable only if the bot and its runtime stay within a very small memory footprint. |
| Less than 1 CPU, 1 GB RAM | $19/month | More headroom for larger libraries, caches or multiple background tasks. |
| 1 CPU, 2 GB RAM | $40/month | Designed for substantially heavier workloads than a basic single bot. |
Render also explains that its bill has three parts: “Render charges for three things: your workspace plan (flat subscription), metered features like bandwidth (usage-based), and compute for your applications (usage-based).” A $0 Hobby workspace therefore does not automatically mean $0 compute; add the workspace, application runtime and metered features together.
How the main hosting models differ
Free or allowance-based hosting
Free allowances can be useful for experiments, private bots or commands that tolerate interruption. Typical restrictions can include sleeping after inactivity, limited monthly runtime, low memory, bandwidth caps or a provider’s right to change the allowance. A sleeping process cannot receive events reliably while it is stopped, so a free service may be unsuitable for a bot expected to respond at any time. Check the selected provider’s current terms, because free quotas and sleep policies change.
Managed platform as a service
Railway, Render, Fly.io and Heroku remove much of the server administration. You connect a repository or container, select resources and let the platform handle deployment primitives, process supervision and logs. The trade-off is metered billing and less control over the underlying machine. Railway, Render and Fly.io can scale resource allocations, while Heroku’s documentation describes usage-based billing except for the Eco Dynos Plan. Always calculate the cost of a continuously running process, not merely the cost of creating an account.

Discord-specialist hosting
A specialist service packages the bot runtime and Discord-oriented setup. The advertised $4.99-per-month starting price can be attractive when your priority is convenience rather than infrastructure control. Before subscribing, verify whether that price includes enough RAM for your language and libraries, unlimited or capped bandwidth, automatic restarts, backups, log retention, support and a specific region. A low headline price is only comparable with a managed platform when those inclusions match.

Virtual private server
A VPS gives you a general-purpose Linux machine. The dated comparison places a small DigitalOcean Droplet at an estimated $6 per month and Hetzner Cloud at $14.09 for the stated 0.5-vCPU/512-MB workload. A VPS can be flexible and inexpensive, but you must patch the operating system, configure a process manager, protect credentials, monitor disk and memory, handle deployments and recover from failures. The hourly server charge is not the same as a fully managed service.
What makes the monthly bill rise
Continuous runtime
Metered platforms charge for the time your process is allocated resources. Running 24/7 costs more than starting a bot only during development or scheduled events. If a provider bills by the second or minute, stopping unused environments can reduce compute; if you need guaranteed availability, budget for the full month.
CPU and memory
Memory is often the first bottleneck. A Python, Node.js or Java bot with a large command framework, image processing, voice features or a cache can exceed 256 MB. Moving from Render’s 256-MB example at $6 to 1 GB at $19 is a concrete illustration of the cost of headroom. CPU-intensive moderation, media conversion and large scheduled jobs can require a higher tier even when memory is adequate.
Bandwidth and egress
Text-only command traffic is usually light, but attachments, image generation, audio, large embeds and frequent API polling increase outbound data. Providers may include a quota and charge for overages. Record expected monthly transfer and check whether downloads, logs and object storage are counted separately.

Databases, disks and queues
Storing per-server settings, user profiles, moderation records, queues or analytics may require a managed database or persistent disk. Those services can cost more than the bot process itself. Include database storage, backups, replicas and connection limits in the budget, and do not assume a container’s temporary filesystem survives a restart.
Workspace and management fees
Some platforms separate an account or workspace subscription from application compute. Render explicitly lists workspace plans in addition to compute and metered features. Add every workspace, team, build-minute and observability charge before comparing a platform with a single-price VPS.
Taxes, credits and region
The published and estimated figures may exclude sales tax or VAT. Promotional credits can make an initial invoice look lower, while a different data-center region can change compute or bandwidth rates. Treat the prices above as pre-tax planning references unless your account shows otherwise.
How much capacity does a Discord bot need?
Start with one process and measure it under realistic command traffic. A small text-command bot often fits below 0.5 vCPU and 512 MB RAM, which is the assumption behind the dated comparison. That is not a guarantee: the language runtime, dependency set, sharding model, cache size and enabled features determine actual use.
- Basic commands and moderation: begin with the smallest always-on tier that provides at least the memory your runtime needs, then watch peak memory rather than only the average.
- Large caches or many servers: reserve additional RAM and consider an external database so a restart does not erase state.
- Voice, media or image work: expect higher CPU, memory and bandwidth; isolate heavy jobs from the event-handling process when possible.
- Multiple bots: compare one larger instance with separate services, including the effect on failure isolation and total minimum charges.
Set an alert for memory, CPU, restart count, disk use and outbound bandwidth. A cheap plan that repeatedly runs out of memory can create more downtime and troubleshooting work than a slightly larger plan.

Free hosting: when it works and when it does not
You can sometimes host a Discord bot at no charge using a provider’s free allowance, but “free” normally means limited rather than unlimited. Confirm four conditions before relying on it:
- Does the process remain awake, or does it sleep after inactivity?
- Is monthly runtime sufficient for the hours you require?
- Are the memory, CPU and bandwidth ceilings compatible with your bot’s peak usage?
- Can you use persistent storage, private environment variables and logs without a paid upgrade?
A free tier is reasonable for learning, a test bot or a service where occasional downtime is acceptable. For a public bot that must answer commands continuously, budget for paid always-on compute and treat any free allowance as a bonus rather than a permanent entitlement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between a PaaS, specialist host and VPS
| Decision factor | Managed PaaS | Discord-specialist host | VPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly total | Usage-based; the dated 0.5-vCPU/512-MB estimates range from $4.09 to $9.25 among the listed services. | Advertised from $4.99/month; included resources must be confirmed. | Dated estimates are $6 for a DigitalOcean Droplet and $14.09 for Hetzner Cloud. |
| Always-on guarantee | Depends on the selected paid resource; free allowances may sleep or stop. | Advertised as always-on Python bot hosting; verify the plan terms. | You control the running process, but uptime still depends on your administration and the provider’s infrastructure. |
| CPU and RAM | Select a measured resource tier; Render lists 256 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB examples at different prices. | Plan-specific; not stated for the $4.99 entry price. | Choose the VPS size and can resize later, subject to availability and pricing. |
| Sleep behavior | Free tiers may sleep; paid behavior varies by service. | Confirm whether the advertised plan suspends or restarts workloads. | No platform sleep is expected while the VPS is running, but your process can still crash. |
| Bandwidth and storage | Quotas and overages vary; databases and disks are usually separate line items. | Included limits are not stated and must be checked. | Defined by the VPS plan plus any attached volumes or backups. |
| Deployment difficulty | Lowest operational burden: connect code, set variables and deploy. | Usually the simplest path for a Discord-specific setup. | Highest: install, secure, deploy and update the server yourself. |
| Regions | Choose from the provider’s available regions; latency and price can vary. | Check which region the plan uses. | Select an available data center and account for latency to Discord services and your database. |
| Logging and monitoring | Basic logs are generally integrated; retention and advanced metrics may cost extra. | Verify log access and retention. | You configure the tools and retain the logs, consuming your own disk or a separate service. |
| Backups and support | Backups and support levels depend on the service and plan. | Confirm whether backups and human support are included. | You are responsible unless you purchase and configure backup and support products. |
| Security updates | The provider maintains the platform; you still patch application dependencies and secrets. | The host manages the platform layer; you still maintain bot code and credentials. | You handle operating-system patches, firewall rules, SSH access, runtime updates and incident response. |
A practical budgeting and deployment checklist
- Define availability. Decide whether the bot must run 24/7 or only during testing and scheduled events. This determines whether a sleep-capable free allowance is acceptable.
- Measure the bot locally. Record peak RAM, CPU and outbound traffic while running its largest commands. Include startup time and the size of any cache.
- Choose the operating model. Pick a managed platform for less server work, a specialist host for turnkey Discord setup, or a VPS when you are comfortable administering Linux.
- Price the complete stack. Add compute, workspace, bandwidth, persistent disk, database, backups, monitoring and taxes. Do not compare a bare VPS price with a PaaS total that includes managed add-ons.
- Set deployment safeguards. Store the Discord token as a secret, restrict repository and server access, enable automatic restarts, and configure a health check or alert for a stopped process.
- Test failure recovery. Restart the process, redeploy a new version and restore the database or configuration from backup before inviting many servers.
- Review the invoice after the first month. Compare measured CPU, memory, runtime and bandwidth with the estimate. Downgrade unused capacity or move up before limits cause outages.
Common cost mistakes and fixes
Choosing a free tier for a bot that must be online
Symptom: commands fail after idle periods or the bot appears offline. Fix: use an always-on paid resource or redesign the bot so delayed jobs do not depend on a sleeping process.
Ignoring the database
Symptom: settings disappear after redeploying. Fix: use persistent storage, schedule backups and include those services in the monthly budget.
Under-sizing memory
Symptom: repeated restarts, out-of-memory errors or dropped gateway connections. Fix: inspect peak memory, remove unnecessary caches and move to the next memory tier before adding unrelated optimizations.
Best Value
Leaving a VPS unmaintained
Symptom: expired packages, exposed SSH access or no usable logs after a crash. Fix: establish a patch schedule, firewall policy, non-root deployment user, credential rotation, monitoring and tested backups.
Budgeting from a promotional credit
Symptom: the second invoice is much higher than the first. Fix: calculate the post-credit recurring price and verify tax, region and bandwidth rates in the provider’s billing console.

Which budget should you plan for?
For one modest, continuously running bot with low traffic, reserve $5–$10 per month for compute and leave room for tax or a small storage add-on. A specialist entry plan may start at $4.99, while the dated estimates place several managed options between $4.09 and $9.25. A VPS can be near the low end when you provide the administration yourself.
Increase the budget when the bot needs more than roughly 512 MB, handles media or voice, serves many guilds, stores substantial history, or requires managed databases and backups. Render’s published examples show how quickly resource requirements can move a service from $6 for 256 MB to $19 for 1 GB and $40 for 2 GB. The right plan is the least expensive one that maintains the required availability without exhausting CPU, memory, bandwidth or storage.
