To schedule announcements on a 7 Days to Die server, create a scheduled task that runs a console or RCON command, then use say "Your_Message_Here" as the command. On a managed server, this is usually done in the hosting control panel. On a self-hosted server, a manager such as CatalysmsServerManager (CSMM) can run commands at intervals and send timed messages. The crucial detail is that the task must execute a game-console command; editing serverconfig.xml alone will not broadcast a message.

What you need before scheduling a message
A scheduled announcement depends on three separate pieces: a running server, an administration connection, and a scheduler that can execute a command inside the game. Confirm each one before creating a task.

- Server ownership: Determine whether the world runs on a game-hosting provider or on hardware you manage yourself. The setup location and maintenance work are different.
- Console or RCON access: The scheduler needs permission to submit commands to the server console. A task that only runs an operating-system script or edits a configuration file cannot send a live chat message.
- A scheduler: Look for a control-panel feature named Scheduled Tasks, Scheduler, or Automation. The task type you need is usually labeled Console/RCON Command. If your panel does not expose that option, install or connect a server manager that supports recurring commands.
- Administrative credentials: Keep the console/RCON password available, but do not paste it into public documentation, screenshots, or chat. The exact fields available depend on the server software and host.
The seven-day setup plan
Use this sequence to move from an unverified environment to a dependable announcement schedule. The first test should be short and visible before you add a production timetable.
Day 1: Identify where the server is managed
Open the provider’s game-server panel if the server is hosted for you. Search its navigation for Scheduled Tasks, Tasks, Automation, or a similar label. You are looking for a task action that runs a command in the game, not a generic backup or file-edit job.

For a self-hosted installation, decide whether you will use the server’s built-in console/RCON interface or a web-based manager. CSMM describes support for running any command at an interval and for timed server messages, making it a fallback when the host has no scheduler.
Day 2: Verify the version and configuration model
Check the server version shown by the host panel or startup log. The current configuration reference for version V3.3.0 says the server reads 69 properties from serverconfig.xml. It also notes that 30 older properties were removed in V3.0 and that many gameplay controls now belong in SandboxCode or runtime preferences.

Scheduled chat messages are sent at runtime through the console command, so they should not be implemented by changing a deprecated gameplay property.
Day 3: Check the administration interface
Review the live server configuration for the administration fields your installation supports. The settings reference lists TelnetEnabled, TelnetPort, TelnetPassword, and TerminalWindowEnabled. These fields indicate whether remote Telnet administration, its listening port and password, or a local terminal window are available.
Use the interface that your host documents. If remote access is disabled, enable it only through the provider’s supported controls and protect the credentials. A scheduler that cannot authenticate will create a task but will not deliver its command.
Day 4: Create a one-message test task
In the scheduler, create a new task and select Console/RCON Command rather than the default task type. Enter this command exactly:

say "Server restart in 10 minutes"Keep the quotation marks around the message. They define the text passed to the say command, especially when the announcement contains spaces. Save the task, but use a short test interval or a one-time run while you watch the server.
Day 5: Confirm delivery to connected players
Join the server with an account that can see global chat. Wait for the test execution and verify that the announcement appears to every connected player, not only in the administrator console. If you see a console error but no chat line, the task may be reaching the server while using the wrong command context.
Do not move to a long interval until one complete execution has been observed. Testing with a harmless sentence avoids confusing a failed scheduler with a real restart warning.
Day 6: Add the production timing
After the command works, replace the test with the cadence your community needs. A practical restart-warning sequence is 30, 15, 10, 5, and 1 minute before maintenance; these intervals are an operational recommendation, not a requirement imposed by the game or the hosting documentation.
Each warning can be its own scheduled task, or your manager can run a series of timed commands if that feature is available. Include the action and the remaining time in every message, for example say "Server restart in 5 minutes". Avoid relying on a single warning that players might miss.
Day 7: Save, apply, and document the task
Hyper Layer’s documented workflow is to save the task settings and then apply the scheduled task. Follow the equivalent action in your own panel; some interfaces call it Apply, Enable, or Deploy. Record the task name, command, timezone shown by the panel, interval, and the account or service that owns it.

Keep a second, disabled test task if your panel supports it. That gives you a safe way to verify command delivery after a host migration or server update without changing the live restart schedule.
The command that sends a message
Use the say command
The documented pattern is:
say "Your_Message_Here"Replace the placeholder with the text players should see. For example:
say "Event starts in 15 minutes"
say "Server restart in 5 minutes"
say "Restart complete; you may reconnect"The quotation marks should remain around each complete message. They are particularly important when the announcement contains spaces. Do not add brackets, markdown, or a leading slash unless your host’s command field specifically requires those characters.
Why a file edit is not a broadcast
serverconfig.xml stores server properties and administration-interface settings. It is not a queue of chat messages. A generic operating-system task that edits that file may change a setting after a restart, but it does not execute say for players who are currently connected. Use a Console/RCON task or a server manager that submits the command to the running process.
Setting up the task in a managed hosting panel
- Sign in to the game-server control panel and open the server instance.
- Open Scheduled Tasks, Scheduler, or the panel’s equivalent automation page.
- Create a new task and change Task Type to Console/RCON Command. Hyper Layer specifically instructs users to select this option instead of the default task type.
- Paste a complete command such as
say "Server restart in 10 minutes"into the command field. - Set a one-time or short test schedule. Check the panel’s displayed timezone before choosing a clock time.
- Save the task, then select the panel’s Apply, Enable, or Deploy action so the scheduler begins using it.
- Watch the console and in-game chat for one execution. Only after it succeeds should you add the remaining warnings or a recurring interval.
Panel names vary, but the required combination does not: a scheduled action, authenticated console/RCON access, and the say command.
Using a self-hosted manager when the panel has no scheduler
If you run the server yourself, you can use the local terminal or a remote administration interface for occasional messages. That is suitable for an announcement you send once, but it does not solve recurring restart warnings.

CSMM is a web-based 7 Days to Die server manager. Its project README lists “Server automation – Run any command in any time interval you want” and “Timed server messages.” In practice, you install and maintain the manager, connect it to the server’s supported administration interface, and create an interval rule containing the same say command.
- Install the manager according to its project documentation on a machine that can reach the game server.
- Connect it using the administration method enabled on your server, such as the documented Telnet/RCON settings.
- Create an automation rule for a harmless test command and confirm that the manager reports a successful connection.
- Set the message text and interval, then run the rule while a player is connected.
- Enable the production rules only after the test message appears in game, and monitor the manager after server or operating-system updates.
A self-hosted manager adds another service to patch, back up, secure, and keep online. Its benefit is flexibility when a hosting panel cannot schedule arbitrary console commands.

The first row reflects the workflow documented by Hyper Layer. The automation and timed-message capabilities in the second row are listed by the CSMM project. The maintenance differences follow from where each tool runs: a provider manages the panel infrastructure, while a self-hosted manager becomes your responsibility.

Restart warnings
State both the event and the remaining time. “Restart in 10 minutes” is more actionable than “Maintenance soon.” If the restart is scheduled for a known clock time, include it only when the panel and players use the same timezone. Otherwise, use a countdown so daylight-saving or timezone differences do not create confusion.

Use a separate message for a save or maintenance action rather than combining several instructions into one long line. Short messages are easier to read in a busy chat window. Create the task only after confirming that the underlying command is supported by your server version and manager.
Events and community notices
For an event, schedule one announcement far enough in advance for players to prepare and a second reminder closer to the start. Keep event messages separate from restart tasks so you can disable one schedule without accidentally removing operational warnings.
Version and configuration details that affect troubleshooting
The V3.3.0 configuration reference says the server reads 69 properties from serverconfig.xml. It also documents 30 properties removed in V3.0, with many gameplay controls moved to SandboxCode or runtime preferences. An older tutorial may therefore show fields that your current server ignores.
These version changes do not change the basic message command: the scheduler still needs to submit say to the running console. They do change where you look when an administration connection fails or a configuration edit appears to have no effect. Always compare the property names and interface instructions with the version actually running on your server.

Troubleshooting: why a scheduled say command does nothing
The task ran, but no player saw a message
- Open the task and verify that its type is Console/RCON Command, not a generic command, backup, or file operation.
- Check that the command begins with
sayand that the message is enclosed in quotation marks. - Confirm that you saved the task and used the panel’s apply or enable action.
- Run the task manually, if the panel offers that button, while a test player is connected.
The scheduler reports an authentication or connection error
- Check whether the server’s Telnet or RCON interface is enabled.
- Verify the configured port and password against the live server configuration; the relevant fields include
TelnetEnabled,TelnetPort, andTelnetPassword. - If the server uses a local terminal instead of remote administration, select the manager or panel integration that supports that interface.
- After changing an administration setting, restart only when your host’s procedure requires it, then repeat the harmless test command.
An edit to serverconfig.xml had no effect
First verify the version. In V3.3.0, the server reads a defined set of 69 properties, and older properties removed in V3.0 are ignored. Gameplay controls that moved to SandboxCode or runtime preferences must be changed in their current location. A configuration edit also cannot replace a runtime say command for live players.
The host does not offer scheduled console commands
Ask the provider whether its control panel supports Console/RCON scheduled tasks. If it does not, run a compatible server manager such as CSMM on a system you control, or continue with manual console announcements for infrequent events. Do not assume that an ordinary cron job or task scheduler can broadcast to the game unless it is connected to the game’s administration interface.
Messages arrive at the wrong time
Check the timezone displayed by the scheduler and the server’s operating-system timezone. Prefer countdown wording when players are distributed across regions, and document the chosen timezone beside each production task. Test one execution after any daylight-saving or host migration change.
Keeping scheduled messages reliable
- Maintain a single list of enabled tasks with their command text, interval, timezone, and purpose.
- Keep production messages short enough to read in the chat feed.
- Review the task after a game-version, host-panel, or server-manager update.
- Retest the command after changing Telnet/RCON credentials or ports.
- Disable obsolete event tasks instead of deleting them immediately, if your scheduler supports a disabled state; this preserves the wording and timing for future reference.
- Never publish administration passwords or place them inside a message command visible to other players.
Once a test execution is visible in game, the same say command can support restart warnings, event reminders, and other routine announcements without an administrator logging in for every message.
