A Valheim server can cost nothing for the software or about $5–$15 per month for a small rented server in 2026. Self-hosting uses the free dedicated-server download through SteamCMD, but you still pay with electricity, bandwidth, setup time and your own responsibility for uptime and security. Managed hosting costs more, but usually includes a ready-to-use control panel and may include backups or mod support.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Prices below are indicative listings and guide estimates available in October 2026. Plans, currencies, introductory offers and renewal rates change, so confirm the current checkout price before committing.

The two ways to run a Valheim server
Your real cost depends first on whether you run the server yourself or rent infrastructure from a game-server provider.
Self-hosting: free server software, paid operating costs
Iron Gate’s dedicated server distribution is available through SteamCMD at no software charge. The Steam application ID is 896660. That makes self-hosting free in licensing terms, but not necessarily free in practice. A computer must remain powered while friends play, and your internet connection must handle the traffic.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Electricity: A desktop, mini-PC or home server consumes power for every hour it runs. The actual amount depends on your hardware and local electricity tariff.
- Bandwidth: Your internet plan must tolerate the server’s upload traffic. A metered connection can create a separate bill.
- Hardware: You need a machine with enough memory, processor capacity and storage, either at home or in a location you control.
- Administration: You handle operating-system updates, firewall rules, passwords, backups, crashes and recovery.
Cybernews’ discussion of self-hosting highlights the trade-off: you gain control and customization, but must accept more work around load times, uptime and security. A home server can be excellent for a small group that already owns suitable hardware; it is less attractive if the machine is old, unreliable or shared with other demanding workloads.
Managed hosting: a recurring monthly bill
A managed game-server host charges a monthly fee for the machine, network connection and management tools. The provider normally keeps the server online in a datacenter, so your home computer does not need to run continuously. You generally receive a web panel for starting the server, changing settings and installing a world.

Current listed prices and what they include
The following are advertised monthly prices captured in October 2026. “From” prices are starting points, not guaranteed totals for every configuration. The currencies are shown exactly as listed.
| Listing | Advertised monthly price | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Game-serverhosting | From €6.32 for 4 GB; €12.32 for 8 GB | The 8 GB plan is presented as the recommended Valheim tier. |
| Supercraft | From $7.99 | Listing mentions BepInEx, Thunderstore mod support and daily backups. |
| WinterNode | $11.94 for 6 GB; $15.92 for 8 GB | The 8 GB option is presented as recommended. |
| Indifferent Broccoli | $5.99 for one player; $18.99 for the largest listed plan | The largest listing is described as supporting 10 players. |
| Codeless (ShockByte) | From $14.99 | This figure comes from a low-confidence listing and should be verified especially carefully. |
These numbers are provider-listing snapshots rather than official industry statistics. Taxes, billing currency, location, optional backups, extra storage and longer-term promotions can change the amount charged. A monthly “from” price may also apply only to the smallest memory tier.
What makes a Valheim server more expensive?
RAM is usually the main price lever
The ESA Games estimate identifies RAM as the primary driver of hosting cost. The plan examples support that pattern: an 8 GB tier is repeatedly marked as recommended, while 4 GB and 6 GB plans are cheaper starting points. More memory gives the server room for a larger active world, additional background services and mod loaders.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
For a small, lightly modded group, the least expensive tier may be adequate. If several players explore different regions at once, the world has been running for months, or you use a substantial mod list, moving to the provider’s 8 GB tier is the common recommendation in the available listings. Do not treat 8 GB as a universal technical guarantee; it is a recurring plan recommendation, not an official requirement published by Iron Gate.
Player count and world age
More simultaneous players increase the server’s workload, and a long-lived world accumulates buildings, discovered areas, items and backups. Hosting guides therefore place larger or persistent worlds in the €10–€15 range rather than the entry-level €5 range. The often-repeated 10-player limit appears in guides and provider descriptions, but an official Iron Gate or Steam specification was not established here, so regard provider capacity labels as plan-specific claims rather than a universal limit.
Mods and management extras
Modded servers can require a larger memory tier and more storage. Supercraft’s listing explicitly includes BepInEx and Thunderstore tooling, as well as daily backups; comparable features may be bundled, limited or charged separately elsewhere. Before choosing a cheap plan, check whether the control panel supports the mod loader and whether backups are automatic, retained for a useful period and restorable without opening a support ticket.

Billing term and renewal price
Hosting companies often display a lower effective monthly rate for a multi-month or multi-year commitment. Promotional pricing can end at renewal, and the recurring rate may be materially higher. Read the term, renewal amount, cancellation rule and tax treatment together. Compare the total amount due over the period you actually expect to play, not only the highlighted first-month figure.
Self-hosting requirements and network choices
Storage
One SteamCMD-based guide recommends at least 15–20 GB of free disk space for the dedicated server. That is a floor, not a comfortable long-term allocation. Leave additional room for world files, logs, updates, mod packages and more than one backup copy. A full disk can prevent a world from saving correctly, so monitor free space instead of allocating only the minimum.
Ports or crossplay relay
The traditional direct-connection setup requires forwarding UDP ports 2456 and 2457 from your router to the server machine, and allowing them through the host firewall. If you cannot configure port forwarding, the -crossplay launch argument can relay traffic without that router change. Crossplay relay changes the networking path, so test connections from outside your home network before inviting the whole group.
Best Value
Reliability and security
Use a separate operating-system account where practical, keep the server and operating system patched, choose a strong world password and restrict administrative access. Schedule backups to a different disk or machine; a backup stored on the same failing drive is not a recovery plan. A home server also needs a plan for power cuts and router restarts. Managed hosting shifts much of that physical responsibility to the provider, but you still need to understand its backup and recovery policy.
How to set up a self-hosted server without a hosting bill
- Prepare the machine. Confirm that it can remain powered for the intended play schedule and that at least 15–20 GB of disk space is free, with extra capacity for mods and backups.
- Install SteamCMD. Use SteamCMD to download the Valheim dedicated-server application identified by App ID
896660. Keep the installation directory separate from your saved-world backup location. - Choose the network method. Either forward ports
2456and2457to the server and permit them in the firewall, or launch with-crossplaywhen router forwarding is unavailable. - Set the world and access details. Select the world, server name and password in the server configuration, and avoid sharing administrative credentials in a public chat.
- Start and test. Launch the dedicated server, connect from another device or an external network, and verify that the intended players can join before beginning a major build.
- Automate maintenance. Keep a repeatable update and restart routine, copy world files to separate storage and check available disk space regularly.
This route avoids a hosting subscription, but your time is part of the cost. If troubleshooting networking, updates or corrupted saves would interrupt your group’s play, a managed plan may be cheaper in practical terms even when its monthly price is higher.
Which option fits your group?
| Use case | Most suitable approach | Budget expectation | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friends with an always-on spare PC and basic networking knowledge | Self-hosted SteamCMD server | Software is free; electricity and bandwidth vary | You manage uptime, security, ports and backups. |
| Small vanilla group wanting quick setup | Entry-level managed game-server plan | About $5–$15 or roughly €5–€10 per month | Lower control and a recurring bill. |
| Persistent world with several players | Managed plan around the recommended 8 GB tier | Often around €10–€15, with provider-specific pricing | Higher monthly cost, especially with add-ons. |
| Custom operating system and full server control | Self-managed generic VPS | Not stated in the available listings | You configure the OS, security, networking, updates and backups yourself. |
A practical 2026 budget
Small vanilla group
Plan on approximately $5–$15 monthly when renting, with the lower end aimed at a small and lightly loaded world. In euro-denominated guidance, €5 is the commonly cited basic target. Check memory allocation rather than selecting solely by headline price.
Modded or long-running world
Budget closer to the middle or upper part of the range, often €10–€15 in the cited guidance, and look for at least the provider’s recommended 8 GB tier. Confirm mod-loader compatibility, backup retention and storage limits before paying.
Home server
Budget $0 for the dedicated-server software itself, then account for electricity, bandwidth, hardware wear, your internet plan and the value of your administration time. The monetary result can be lower than renting, but the reliability burden is higher.
Common cost and setup mistakes
- Choosing the cheapest “from” price without checking RAM: The entry tier may not match your player count or mod list.
- Confusing introductory and renewal rates: Record the recurring price and billing term before checkout.
- Assuming backups are included: Confirm frequency, retention and restoration procedure.
- Filling the disk with worlds and logs: Keep free space beyond the 15–20 GB starting recommendation.
- Opening ports unnecessarily: Use the
-crossplayoption when appropriate, and limit firewall exposure to the required traffic. - Testing only from inside the home network: An internal test can pass even when external players cannot connect; test from a separate connection.
If players cannot connect, first verify the server is running, then check the firewall and ports 2456 and 2457. If forwarding is impossible, test a launch using -crossplay. If the server starts but lags or crashes as the world grows, review memory allocation, remove incompatible mods and move to the next RAM tier before buying unrelated extras.
