A second internet connection adds a recurring local service cost, but it does not automatically make one YouTube stream faster. For live broadcasting, its main value is outage resilience—if a compatible dual-WAN router is configured to fail over to it and the second service remains available when the first fails. For watching YouTube, it usually adds little when your current connection already sustains the resolution you want.
The answer depends first on what “YouTube streaming” means: watching videos or broadcasting live. They have different bandwidth needs, and neither has a universal second-line price. Compare the cost and performance available at your address before signing up.

Watching YouTube: a second line is usually unnecessary if the first is fast enough
YouTube lists approximate sustained connection speeds of 5 Mbps for 1080p HD playback and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD playback. These are playback recommendations, not guarantees for a particular household, Wi-Fi network or service plan. YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices are a useful starting point.

Check performance on the device and in the room where you watch, especially during normal household use. If your existing connection reliably sustains the resolution you want, a second subscription is not an automatic picture-quality upgrade. If it does not, first identify whether the bottleneck is the internet service, Wi-Fi coverage, or simultaneous household traffic; a second line only helps if the device or network is actually configured to use it.

Broadcasting live: calculate upload headroom before buying another line
For a live broadcast, the encoder sends data out, so upload capacity and stability matter. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total bitrate. That headroom is guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. Test upload performance under realistic household conditions at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingestion bitrate ranges include 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 11–42 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps. These are encoder bitrate ranges, not recommended internet-plan tiers or measured upload speeds. The upper end of a chosen range requires more upload capacity than the lower end; leave the recommended headroom above your stream’s total bitrate. If one connection provides enough stable upload capacity for your chosen settings, a second one does not automatically increase the bandwidth available to that stream. Its clearest potential benefit is continuity when the primary connection fails.

Failover: a resilience option, not extra stream speed
A compatible dual-WAN router can use one internet service as the primary connection and another as a backup. When configured for failover, it switches traffic to the backup if the primary WAN connection fails. ASUS describes this behavior in its Dual WAN introduction and setup guide, last updated August 13, 2025. The feature is model-specific: check the router’s specifications, supported WAN interfaces and firmware documentation, then confirm that the second service can connect through the available interface.

Failover is useful only if the router and backup service are working and the second service is not affected by the same failure. For example, ask providers how the services are delivered and whether they share infrastructure or equipment at your address. The cited guidance does not establish how much interruption a particular setup will prevent, so do not treat failover as a guarantee of an uninterrupted broadcast.
Load balancing: session distribution is not bandwidth bonding
Some dual-WAN routers offer load balancing, which distributes network sessions across connections and may support routing rules. That does not mean one YouTube stream combines both lines’ upload rates. Check the exact behavior documented for your router rather than assuming that two subscriptions add together for a single broadcast.

A backup encoder solves a different problem
YouTube also documents testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking whether the player rolls over. That tests backup-encoder behavior; it does not configure a second internet provider or dual-WAN failover. The two safeguards address different failure points. How to decide whether the extra monthly cost is worth it
- Define the problem. If you mean watching videos, check whether your existing connection sustains the resolution you want. If you broadcast live, identify whether the issue is insufficient upload capacity or outages; a second line is chiefly a resilience purchase.
- Measure the current connection under realistic conditions. For live streaming, test at the intended resolution and frame rate while other household devices are in normal use. Compare the available upload capacity with the chosen stream’s total bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Check the router before ordering service. Verify that its exact model and firmware support Dual WAN, the required WAN interfaces and the failover mode you plan to use. Read the manufacturer’s setup instructions for primary and secondary connections.
- Ask local providers for the full terms at your address. Compare realistic upload performance, availability, data limits, contract terms and the recurring price. There is no universal second-line price or performance figure: those depend on location and provider.
- Decide whether the failure you care about is covered. A backup line is less useful if the router cannot switch to it or both services depend on the same local infrastructure. Consider the value of avoiding an interruption against the full recurring cost; available information does not support a numerical estimate of outage reduction.
