How Much Does a 24/7 YouTube Stream Cost on an Old Chromebook Running Linux?

A 24/7 stream’s electricity cost depends on the Chromebook’s measured wall power and your local rate. Here’s the calculation—and what to check before relying on an old Chromebook running Linux.

There is no reliable universal price. To estimate the electricity cost of running a Chromebook for a 24/7 YouTube stream, measure the average power draw of the complete setup at the wall, then multiply its energy use by your local electricity rate. That calculation covers electricity only—not internet service, equipment, or streaming-service fees.

Calculate the electricity cost

Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the Chromebook, charger, and any accessories that will stay on. A charger’s maximum wattage is not the same as the Chromebook’s actual running consumption. The U.S. Department of Energy’s guide explains the basic calculation: energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) = watts × hours ÷ 1,000.

  1. Measure the average wall draw in watts while the Chromebook is doing the work you plan to stream.
  2. Multiply watts by the number of operating hours, then divide by 1,000 to get kWh.
  3. Multiply kWh by the price per kWh on your electricity bill.

For continuous operation, monthly kWh over a 30-day month equals average watts × 0.72. Annual kWh over 365 days equals average watts × 8.76.

Example, not a typical-device estimate: If a meter reads an average of 10 W, a 30-day month uses 7.2 kWh, and 365 days uses 87.6 kWh. Multiply either figure by your local electricity price to find the electricity cost. The 10 W value is hypothetical arithmetic only; it is not a measured or representative draw for an old Chromebook.

Can an old Chromebook running Linux stream reliably?

It depends on the Chromebook model, the Linux setup, the streaming workload, and the internet connection. “Linux on a Chromebook” can mean ChromeOS’s Linux development environment. Google describes that environment as Debian-based and documents that hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode, is not supported there: Set up Linux on your Chromebook.

OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and X11 or Wayland among its Linux requirements, but meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream successfully. OBS says the workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity: OBS system requirements. An unspecified older Chromebook therefore cannot be assumed to sustain a stable stream around the clock.

If you try local streaming, test the exact device and intended workload before relying on it. Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce encoding and upload demands, but they do not prove the device or connection will remain reliable.

Choose YouTube settings and test before going live

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265, or AV1 ingest and constant bitrate encoding over RTMP/RTMPS. Its listed recommended H.264 bitrates include:

Resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 bitrate
480p30 3 Mbps
720p30 4 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that an older Chromebook can encode or upload at those settings. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full settings guidance.

  1. Set a conservative resolution and frame rate the Chromebook appears able to handle.
  2. Use a supported encoder and constant bitrate, following YouTube’s current settings for your chosen format.
  3. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube specifically advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
  4. Monitor stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room during the test. Do not treat a brief successful test as proof of dependable 24/7 operation.

Plan separately for a complete archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer broadcasts. If you need a complete recording, plan around shorter sessions and verify what YouTube’s Live Control Room does for your channel before relying on a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. What to include in the real cost

  • Electricity: calculate it from measured average wall watts and your local tariff. The result varies by Chromebook, accessories, workload, and location.
  • Internet: the electricity calculation does not include your internet plan or any connection-related charges.
  • Equipment: it excludes the cost of buying or replacing the Chromebook, charger, or meter.
  • Streaming service: if you use a cloud service instead of leaving the Chromebook running, include that service’s current price. Do not call it cheaper than local streaming without comparing its verified fee with your measured power use and electricity rate.
