Running a game continuously
If the stream shows gameplay generated live, the PC must also run the game. That is a different workload from replaying prepared footage, and no source-backed wattage comparison for a particular setup is available here. Measure your own system under the intended workload rather than assuming the 120–200 W example will fit.
Account for the other costs separately
- PC purchase: If you already own a suitable machine, it is not a new monthly expense. If you need to buy one, treat the hardware as a separate upfront cost. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Codec-specific bitrate guidance and setup details are in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.
Keep the stream compliant and check its health
- Use footage, music, and other material you have rights to stream. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it includes material that violates copyright rules.
- Do not assume that looping a compilation automatically qualifies it for monetization. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization decisions depend on the channel and content; a continuous stream does not itself guarantee eligibility.
- Test the encoder and connection before starting, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast.

Compare a home PC with a hosted stream

- Estimate or measure the PC’s average wall draw under the exact task: replaying clips or running a game.
- Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by 720 hours for a 30-day month.
- Multiply the kWh result by the marginal rate on your bill; add any separate internet cost or required hardware purchase.
