For a prerecorded YouTube livestream replay, choose mid-rolls on the video’s timeline in YouTube Studio—not with the live broadcast’s ad-frequency controls. If the replay is monetized and at least eight minutes long, you can use automatic slots, manual slots, or both. Start with automatic placements if you want less editing, then check the replay and keep ad opportunities at natural pauses or transitions rather than in the middle of a sentence or action. A slot is only an opportunity; it does not guarantee an ad.
Choose the approach that fits the replay
YouTube supports automatic mid-roll slots, manual slots, and manual slots supplemented by automatic ones for long videos. The right choice depends on how much control you need and how disruptive an interruption would be. YouTube does not prescribe a universal slot count or fixed spacing for prerecorded videos.

YouTube says slots near natural pauses or visual transitions are more likely to serve than disruptive placements such as mid-sentence or mid-action. Treat that as guidance, not a guarantee: delivery also depends on slot quality, advertiser demand, viewer experience, and other factors. Check eligibility before editing slots
- The video must be monetized and at least eight minutes long for mid-roll ads to be enabled.
- Check that monetization is on for the video and that the channel and video are eligible. Advertiser suitability can affect whether ads run.
- Advertiser-unfriendly content may receive limited or no ads; some age-restricted content is ineligible for monetization. A slot setting does not override these restrictions.

Set mid-rolls for the replay in YouTube Studio
- Open the video’s monetization settings. In YouTube Studio on a desktop computer, open the replay and go to its Monetization settings. Confirm that the video is monetized and at least eight minutes long.
- Turn on mid-rolls. Enable “Show mid-roll ads during my video” when interruptions suit the content.
- Choose automatic placements as a starting point, if appropriate. Review the proposed slots by watching or scrubbing through the actual replay. Do not assume every suggested point fits the recording.
- Adjust the timeline. In “Manage ad slots,” add, move, or delete manual slots. Prefer natural pauses, visual transitions, and changes of topic. Avoid cutting across a sentence, demonstration, or action.
- Decide whether to keep automatic slots alongside manual ones. Leave automatic placements on if you want YouTube to find further opportunities beyond the breakpoints you chose.
- Review feedback and save. Studio may flag a manual slot as unlikely to serve. Consider moving it to a more natural breakpoint; the feedback is a likelihood signal, not a promise. Save the configuration and return to the monetization settings if you need to change it later.
Keep the live-stream controls separate
A replay is managed as a video, even if it originally came from a livestream. Live Control Room options such as automatic, scheduled, or manual live ad breaks belong to an active broadcast; do not use a live-stream interval as a spacing rule for the replay’s timeline. YouTube’s separate live-stream monetization guidance addresses broadcast controls.
YouTube reports that channels choosing automatic live mid-rolls saw over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels without that setting, across 207 countries in January 2024. That figure concerns live-stream settings, not prerecorded video, and is not a forecast of replay revenue.
