1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no fixed data amount: estimate it from the aggregate bitrate of the streams entering MediaPackage and how long they run. As a decimal-unit planning rule, each sustained 1 Mbps uses about 0.45 GB per hour, or 10.8 GB per day, before protocol overhead. Add simultaneous input renditions together, and count both copies if redundant inputs are sent.
Estimate data from bitrate and runtime
Use the aggregate bitrate of the input streams—not a single rendition if several are being sent. For continuous streams at a roughly steady bitrate, the calculation is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- GB per hour ≈ aggregate bitrate in Mbps × 0.45
- GB per day ≈ aggregate bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
These are decimal-GB planning estimates. Actual traffic can differ because of protocol overhead, variable bitrate, and whether a monitoring or billing display reports decimal GB or binary GiB. AWS’s deployment guide uses a binary conversion convention in its example, so its result can differ slightly from the decimal rule above. AWS’s live-streaming deployment guide gives the conversion method and an illustrative example.

At a constant aggregate input of 6 Mbps, one copy is approximately 2.7 GB per hour, or 64.8 GB per day. This is arithmetic from the bitrate rule, not a measurement of a particular deployment. If two identical redundant copies are sent to separate ingest URLs, the incoming transfer is approximately 5.4 GB per hour, or 129.6 GB per day.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
AWS’s illustrative conversion
AWS’s guide converts an aggregate input of 4.2 Mbps to approximately 1.85 GB per hour, and gives 3.70 GB per hour for its redundant-input example. These are worked conversion figures, not a universal usage rate or an AWS price quote.
Know which traffic leg you mean
MediaPackage receives content from an upstream encoder, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, and dynamically packages output when a downstream device or CDN requests it. The configured endpoint determines the output format and tracks. In a YouTube workflow, “data used” can refer to different transfers, which should not be conflated.

- Encoder to MediaPackage (ingest): estimate from the combined bitrate of incoming streams over the runtime. Include both copies when redundant inputs are actively sent.
- MediaPackage to YouTube (egress): this is MediaPackage output traffic only if the architecture requests output from MediaPackage and sends it to YouTube. Measure it with the applicable output-byte metric rather than assuming it equals ingest.
- YouTube to viewers: YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats. That downstream delivery is not automatically MediaPackage egress; it should not be counted as MediaPackage output unless that delivery leg actually passes through MediaPackage.
AWS describes a MediaPackage channel as the entry point for a content stream into the service. The service’s role in the specific architecture determines which traffic legs it handles. AWS Elemental MediaPackage channel documentation.
Account for redundant inputs correctly
With redundant input enabled, two copies may be sent to separate ingest URLs. Count both copies when estimating incoming network transfer and aggregate ingest. MediaPackage uses one active input source and switches to the other on failover; redundancy does not mean that both copies become separate viewer streams. AWS’s deployment guide illustrates the doubled input calculation.

Measure MediaPackage output in CloudWatch
When the question is specifically how many bytes MediaPackage sent downstream, AWS documents the live EgressBytes CloudWatch metric. It records bytes successfully sent by MediaPackage for each request. Metrics are published every minute or more frequently; an interval with no requests has no output data. Sum the metric’s byte values over the period you want to assess. This measures observed output, unlike a bitrate-based estimate of encoder-to-MediaPackage ingest. AWS MediaPackage CloudWatch monitoring documentation.
Choose an input bitrate, then calculate
The bitrate is determined by the encoder configuration and the video format, not by the fact that the stream runs continuously. YouTube’s official encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, for example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1 or H.265 it lists 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not MediaPackage measurements. Use the recommendation for the actual codec and video mode, then total all simultaneous input renditions before calculating. Use the right number for planning
- For an ingest estimate, identify each simultaneous input rendition, add its bitrate, and multiply by 0.45 for approximate decimal GB per hour or 10.8 for a full day.
- If the encoder sends redundant copies to separate ingest URLs, include both copies in the transfer estimate.
- For MediaPackage output, use observed
EgressBytesover the relevant period; ingest bitrate does not directly establish egress volume. - For YouTube viewer delivery, do not treat YouTube’s transcoding and delivery as MediaPackage egress unless MediaPackage is on that delivery path.
- When comparing calculated estimates with a dashboard or bill, check whether it reports decimal GB or binary GiB, and allow for overhead and variable bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel 24/7 rather than build an AWS pipeline, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo plays the uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
