Short answer: You cannot assume a MediaPackage v2 channel reset will leave YouTube Live uninterrupted. AWS tells operators to stop the upstream encoder, reset the channel, wait at least 30 seconds, and then restart the encoder. If the encoder is not stopped first, all endpoints for that channel stop working. AWS and YouTube documentation do not guarantee that a YouTube event will continue without a playback interruption during this process.
To protect a live event, schedule the reset as a planned interruption or switch to a separately configured, tested alternate delivery path first. Confirm whether MediaPackage is actually in the YouTube ingest path; the answer depends on how your production is wired.

What a MediaPackage channel reset affects
A MediaPackage v2 channel is an entry point for live content from an upstream encoder, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive. MediaPackage packages incoming content and serves it through origin endpoints. Its ingest endpoint domains persist for the channel’s lifetime, including through failures or upgrades, but that does not mean playback is uninterrupted during a reset. Do not assume MediaPackage is part of the route to YouTube. A production might send YouTube directly from an encoder, use a distribution service, or have a separate backup route. Trace the actual program path before deciding what a channel reset will affect.

How to reset the channel safely
- Confirm the version and signal path. Verify that this is MediaPackage v2, identify the upstream encoder and the MediaPackage input it sends to, and establish how the program reaches YouTube. The reset procedure discussed here is for MediaPackage v2; see AWS’s channel history reset instructions.
- Plan for a possible interruption. If viewers must not lose the event, do not treat the reset as transparent. Arrange a planned interruption or move delivery to an alternate path that is already configured and verified.
- Stop the upstream encoder. AWS requires the encoder to be stopped before resetting the channel. Its API reference says: “Be sure to stop the encoder before you reset the channel, and wait at least 30 seconds before you restart the encoder.” See ResetChannelState API.
- Reset the MediaPackage channel. Use the reset operation for your MediaPackage v2 channel in your established operational workflow. If you use the API, follow its current request and response requirements; do not leave the encoder running during the reset.
- Wait at least 30 seconds after the reset completes, then restart the encoder. This is AWS’s specified minimum wait, not a guarantee of a recovery time or uninterrupted playback.
- Check the output. Confirm that the MediaPackage endpoint manifest is live again and inspect YouTube stream health and the watch page. AWS notes that playback devices might need to refresh when encoder output resumes and the manifest becomes live again. See the AWS live and VOD manifest reference.
When a backup path can help—and what it cannot guarantee
MediaPackage v2 supports input redundancy when two streams are sent to separate ingest domains. One input is active and the other passive; MediaPackage can switch to the passive input if the active stream stops delivering segments. This is an input-failover design, not evidence that explicitly resetting the channel will be interruption-free. AWS describes the conditions in its input redundancy flow documentation.
- For an AWS Elemental MediaLive HLS workflow, AWS says the input-loss action must pause output so MediaPackage can detect missing segments. Filler frames can hide the loss and prevent failover.
- Short output segments can cause buffering on some playback devices during input switches.
- Endpoint time delay can reduce buffering during input switches, but adds end-to-end latency.
Before relying on any alternate encoder or channel, verify that it is already configured and test the actual failover on the YouTube watch page. YouTube advises stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection and confirming that playback switches to the backup. Check YouTube after the encoder returns
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key, with preview and health monitoring in Live Control Room. Once the encoder is running again, check that its feed is reaching the intended YouTube event, inspect stream health, and verify the preview and public watch page. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions and live encoder settings and stream health guidance.
