How Much Data Does a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream Use on Indian Broadband?

YouTube’s rough rule suggests about 14.4 GB per day to watch a live stream continuously, but your actual use depends on playback quality. Broadcasting uses a separate bitrate-based calculation, and Indian broadband FUP terms vary by plan.

A 24/7 YouTube live stream can use roughly 14.4 GB a day, or 432 GB in a 30-day month, using YouTube’s rough planning rule of about 10 MB per minute. These are estimates, not guaranteed measurements. The figure describes viewing data; if you broadcast the stream yourself, your upload use depends on the encoder’s outgoing bitrate.

How much data does a 24/7 YouTube live stream use?

YouTube Help gives a rough rule of about 10 MB of data per minute for a live stream, in the context of mobile live streaming. Multiplying that estimate by continuous viewing gives:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Viewing period Approximate data Calculation
1 hour About 0.6 GB 10 MB × 60 minutes
24 hours About 14.4 GB 10 MB × 1,440 minutes
30 days About 432 GB 14.4 GB × 30 days

The calculations use decimal units and assume uninterrupted viewing at the same approximate rate. YouTube describes 10 MB per minute as a rule of thumb, not a measured guarantee for every stream, device, or viewer. YouTube’s live-stream filming tips

Will watching YouTube Live all day use my broadband data?

Yes. When you watch a live stream, your broadband connection downloads the video. The amount can differ from the rough estimate because YouTube playback quality may change based on connection speed, the player and screen size, the source quality, and the browser. On supported platforms, viewers can also select a quality setting. YouTube’s playback-quality guidance

As a result, 432 GB is a useful monthly planning figure for a stream watched continuously, not a promise that your broadband account will record exactly that amount. Other household activity also adds to total plan usage.

How much data does broadcasting use?

Broadcasting is a separate calculation. Your encoder sends an outgoing video feed to YouTube, so the data used depends on its sustained bitrate and the time it is live. YouTube’s encoder recommendations describe this incoming broadcast feed; they are not a universal measure of the data downloaded by each viewer. For example, YouTube lists H.264 recommendations of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. YouTube’s encoder settings

Estimate broadcast data from bitrate

At a sustained bitrate of 1 Mbps, the stream transfers about 10.8 GB in 24 hours, before overhead and other network traffic. That arithmetic gives about 54 GB per day at 5 Mbps, or about 1,620 GB over 30 days if the broadcast remains at that bitrate continuously. These are bitrate-based estimates, not official YouTube playback figures.

For a reliable broadcast, data allowance and connection speed are different considerations. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate in available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s streaming tips

How does this compare with Indian broadband FUP limits?

There is no single data cap or fair-use threshold for Indian broadband. Terms differ by provider, plan, billing cycle, and locality; check your current plan details and what happens after any threshold is reached.

  • JioFiber: Terms for applicable unlimited postpaid plans describe 3,300 GB in a bill cycle; usage beyond that may be treated as misuse and the provider says it may withdraw data benefits. Applicable prepaid unlimited plans also state a 3,300 GB threshold in a 30-day recharge cycle. These are Jio plan conditions, not a nationwide rule. JioFiber postpaid terms and JioFiber prepaid terms
  • BSNL: A Chennai Bharat Fibre tariff PDF lists a 3,300 GB FUP example and reduced speed after FUP. It is a local tariff document, not evidence of the current offer for every BSNL subscriber. BSNL Chennai tariff PDF

At the rough 432 GB per month viewing estimate, one continuously watched stream would account for a sizeable portion of a 3,300 GB threshold, before counting other household use. Whether it fits your plan depends on the exact terms that apply to your connection.

How to check what your stream will mean for your plan

  1. Identify the activity: Decide whether you are watching a live stream or broadcasting one. Viewer download and creator upload are different quantities.
  2. Choose an estimate suited to it: For viewing, use YouTube’s rough 10 MB-per-minute figure as a planning guide. For broadcasting, use the actual sustained encoder bitrate if known.
  3. Scale to your schedule: Multiply the hourly or daily estimate by the time you expect to watch or broadcast. For a continuous month, use the 30-day estimate rather than assuming every billing cycle has the same length.
  4. Check your provider’s current terms: Look at your plan bill, provider app, or provider website for the allowance or FUP threshold, billing period, and post-threshold consequence. Do not assume a provider example applies to your plan.
  5. Allow for other use: Include the rest of the household’s broadband traffic when judging whether the available allowance is sufficient.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are broadcasting a pre-recorded video on a 24/7 loop, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
