There is no universal collateral amount for crypto futures. The opening minimum depends on the venue, contract, position size, leverage, margin mode, and eligible collateral. That minimum is not a personal risk budget: decide separately how much capital you can afford to lose and understand the contract’s maintenance-margin and liquidation rules before opening a position.
What collateral does—and what it does not tell you
Collateral, or margin, is funds held to support a futures position. It is not a down payment on the asset. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) puts it plainly: “The margin is not partial payment on a purchase.” Its glossary distinguishes initial margin, required to open a position, from maintenance margin, which must remain on deposit. A broker can require more than an exchange’s stated minimum.

Initial margin answers, “What does this venue require to open this position?” It does not answer, “How much can I afford to lose?” Treat those as separate decisions. No source establishes a safe dollar amount or percentage that applies to every trader.

How to work out the amount for your position
- Pin down the product. Identify the exchange or broker, the exact contract, whether it is a dated future or perpetual, its settlement currency, your position size and margin mode.
- Check the current contract rules. Find the initial- and maintenance-margin requirements, position tiers, eligible collateral and any collateral haircuts. Read the liquidation process for the exact product and account configuration; do not transfer a figure from another venue or contract.
- Calculate the opening requirement using the venue’s method. Use its current calculator or published formula. For example, OKX documents a cross-margin USDT formula using contract size × number of contracts × multiplier × mark price ÷ leverage. That is an OKX example, not a universal formula; other products and margin modes can use different inputs.
- Set a separate loss limit. Decide how much of your account capital you are willing and able to lose, rather than treating the opening requirement as the amount to keep available. Consider adverse price moves, fees, funding where applicable, and—on crypto-margined contracts—changes in the collateral’s value.
- Review how exits can fail to match expectations. A stop order does not guarantee a particular exit price, and liquidation may occur at a worse price than expected. Adding collateral does not guarantee protection from liquidation.
- Recheck before trading. Requirements and eligible collateral can change. Use the current schedule and account details rather than relying on an old calculation.
Why leverage does not make the position safer
Leverage affects the opening margin requirement, not the position’s underlying exposure. In OKX’s documented formula, dividing position value by leverage means higher leverage reduces the amount posted to open the position. But the same notional exposure then has a thinner margin cushion relative to its size. Leverage can amplify both potential returns and losses; a lower opening requirement is not evidence that a position is safer.

Cross and isolated margin put different balances at risk
| Mode | How collateral is allocated | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Cross margin | OKX describes margin as shared across open positions. | The shared pool can support positions, but losses in one position can put that pool at risk. |
| Isolated margin | OKX assigns margin to an individual position; Crypto.com likewise describes its isolated allocation as position-specific. | The allocation is separated for that position under those platforms’ rules. Top-ups, liquidation and the treatment of funds outside the allocation remain subject to the platform and product rules. |
These are platform-specific descriptions, not a promise that funds outside an isolated allocation are protected under every product or legal arrangement. In either mode, read the venue’s rules for adding collateral and triggering liquidation.
Margin requirements can change
For its cryptocurrency futures, CME says margin requirements are set in line with each product’s volatility and liquidity. It also reserves the right to impose additional capital requirements and other risk measures, and says margin-offset credits are dynamic and subject to change. Check the current requirement for your product and exposure rather than assuming a previously sufficient balance will remain sufficient.

CME’s cryptocurrency products are financially settled futures listed on a U.S.-registered designated contract market and derivatives clearing organization, regulated by the CFTC. That is distinct from exchange-operated perpetual products, whose rules and mechanics may differ. CME also cautions that accounting and regulatory treatment varies by country. The CFTC announced staff FAQs on crypto assets and blockchain technologies on March 20, 2026, including context on tokenized collateral guidance and a staff no-action position regarding digital assets accepted as margin collateral; that development should not be read as applying to every trader or venue.

A 2021 paper, Liquidation, Leverage and Optimal Margin in Bitcoin Futures Markets, analyzed BitMEX Bitcoin perpetual-futures data. In the sample studied, the authors reported average daily forced-liquidation percentages of 3.51% for long positions and 1.89% for short positions, and average leverage around 60× among forcibly liquidated traders. Under the paper’s model assumptions and a target of 1% daily margin-call probability, they estimated margins of approximately 33% for longs and 20% for shorts.
