1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCellucor’s current C4 Original page lists 200 mg of caffeine per serving. It directs users to mix one scoop with 6–8 fl oz of water and drink it 20–30 minutes before training; beginners may start with half a scoop. An older Cellucor page lists 150 mg instead, so the Supplement Facts panel on your own container is the final authority.
Why “how much caffeine is in C4?” has more than one answer
C4 is a family of pre-workout products, not one unchanging formula. Cellucor has sold Original, Sport, Extreme, Ultimate and other variants, and their caffeine quantities differ. Even the pages labeled for C4 Original do not agree: the current product page lists 200 mg per serving, while an archived product page lists 150 mg.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That conflict does not establish that one number is universally correct. It indicates that formulas or product pages changed at some point, but the available pages do not identify exactly when the change occurred or which package batches used each recipe. Treat the label on the tub or sachet you actually have as more relevant than a search result, an old review or a comparison chart.
What the current C4 Original directions say
Caffeine per serving
Cellucor’s current C4 Original product page, accessed in 2026, states 200 mg of caffeine per serving. The page describes a serving as one scoop and gives preparation and timing directions alongside that amount.

How much water and when to drink it
The current manufacturer wording is: “Mix 1 scoop with 6-8 oz. of water, consume 20-30 minutes before your workout.” In ordinary units, that is approximately 180–240 milliliters of water. The page also says beginners may start with half a scoop.
If your current tub identifies 200 mg as one full serving, half a serving works out to about 100 mg by simple arithmetic. Use the scoop and serving instructions printed on your container rather than assuming that every product called C4 uses the same scoop size or concentration.
What the older page says
An archived Cellucor C4 Original page lists 150 mg of caffeine per serving. Its directions say one level scoop in 6 fl oz of water 20–30 minutes before training. Because that page is an older version, do not use its 150 mg figure to dose a newer tub without checking the panel in your hand.
Historical caffeine amounts across C4 variants
Cellucor’s comparison article, published approximately in 2021, illustrates why the product name alone is insufficient. These figures are historical comparison values, not a guarantee that every package currently on shelves has the same formula.

| Variant named by Cellucor | Caffeine listed in the comparison article | What the figure represents | Timing information in that article |
|---|---|---|---|
| C4 Original | 150 mg caffeine anhydrous per serving | Historical comparison value, approximately 2021 | Not stated in the comparison article |
| C4 Sport | 135 mg per serving | Historical comparison value, approximately 2021 | Not stated in the comparison article |
| C4 Extreme | 200 mg per serving | Historical comparison value, approximately 2021 | Not stated in the comparison article |
| C4 Ultimate | 300 mg per serving | Historical comparison value, approximately 2021 | Not stated in the comparison article |
The table should be used to identify the scale of differences between variants, not to override a newer Supplement Facts panel. A current C4 Original label can show 200 mg even though the older comparison article assigns Original 150 mg.
How to verify the caffeine in your own container
- Read the exact product name. Record whether it says Original, Sport, Extreme, Ultimate or another designation. “C4” by itself is not a complete identification.
- Find the Supplement Facts panel. Look for “caffeine” or “caffeine anhydrous” and note the milligrams per serving.
- Check the serving definition. Confirm how many scoops, grams or level measures make one serving. A large scoop is not automatically one serving for every formula.
- Read the suggested-use line. Note the water volume, whether the directions specify a full or half scoop, and the stated interval before exercise.
- Check the package date and market. Formulas can be revised, and a label from one region or production run may not match an online page.
- Calculate your planned dose. Multiply the caffeine per serving by the fraction of a serving you intend to use, then add caffeine from coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola, chocolate, medicines or other supplements.
If the printed panel and an online listing conflict, contact the manufacturer or retailer with a photograph of the label. Do not combine numbers from different versions to create an assumed “average” dose.
When should you take C4 before a workout?
For the current C4 Original directions, the answer is 20–30 minutes before exercise. That is the manufacturer’s suggested-use interval, not a clinical guarantee that every person will feel an identical effect at exactly that point. The archived Original directions use the same 20–30-minute interval while specifying a different caffeine amount and water volume.

Do not assume a longer lead time is better
The product directions establish a 20–30-minute interval; they do not establish that taking C4 an hour or several hours earlier improves performance. Taking it earlier also gives caffeine more time to overlap with the rest of your day and, for late sessions, with your normal sleep period.
Starting cautiously
The current page specifically says beginners may start with half a scoop. That approach lets a new user assess tolerance without immediately taking the full labeled serving. Use a proper measuring method and keep the rest of the day’s caffeine in your calculation.
How C4 fits into a full day of caffeine
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says, “For most adults, the FDA has cited 400 milligrams a day … as an amount not generally associated with negative effects.” This is broad consumer guidance, not a target that everyone should reach and not a promise that 400 mg will feel safe or comfortable for a particular person.

With a current 200 mg C4 Original serving, the pre-workout alone uses half of that general reference amount. A 150 mg serving from an older Original container, or a 300 mg serving from the historical Ultimate comparison, changes the remaining margin substantially. Add every other source before deciding whether a serving fits your day.

Late workouts, bedtime and sleep
Caffeine can interfere with sleep even when it is not consumed immediately at bedtime. A 2013 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine tested 400 mg of caffeine at bedtime, three hours before bedtime and six hours before bedtime. All three caffeine timings produced significant sleep disturbance compared with placebo. The authors wrote that the reduction in total sleep time showed “important disruptive effects” even when caffeine was taken six hours before bed.
That study used 400 mg, which is more than one serving of the current C4 Original listed at 200 mg. It therefore supports caution with late-day caffeine but does not provide a universal “C4 cutoff” that applies to every person, product version or dose. Someone using a half serving, someone using a 300 mg variant and someone who metabolizes caffeine differently cannot be assigned the same bedtime rule from that experiment.

- Write down the exact caffeine dose on your container.
- Count coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola, chocolate, medicines and other supplements consumed since waking.
- Compare the planned workout time with your intended bedtime, leaving more separation if you know caffeine affects your sleep.
- If sleep quality worsens, move the workout earlier, reduce the serving in accordance with the label or choose a non-caffeinated option rather than repeatedly testing the same late dose.
Who should get individual medical advice?
The FDA notes substantial variation in caffeine sensitivity and in how quickly people eliminate caffeine. It encourages people with relevant medical conditions, people taking medicines, those who are pregnant or planning pregnancy, and those who are breastfeeding to consult a health professional about caffeine intake.

That advice matters even when the arithmetic is below 400 mg. The general FDA figure describes what is not generally associated with negative effects for most adults; it is not an individualized clearance limit. A clinician or pharmacist can account for your conditions, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding status and total daily intake.
Common label and timing mistakes
Using an old review as the dose
Reviews often preserve a formula that is no longer sold. The 150 mg Original figure remains useful for explaining the discrepancy, but it should not replace the panel on a current package.
Confusing a product family with a variant
Calling every tub “C4” hides the difference between Original, Sport, Extreme, Ultimate and other versions. Record the complete variant name before comparing doses.
Counting only the pre-workout
A 200 mg scoop is not your entire daily caffeine exposure if you also drink coffee or tea. Add the amounts before deciding on another caffeinated product later in the day.
Treating 400 mg as a personal prescription
The FDA’s figure is qualified for most adults and is not a recommended target. Sensitivity, elimination and medical circumstances differ.
Assuming the sleep study gives a precise cutoff
The study’s 400 mg dose and controlled timing cannot establish that every 200 mg serving will disrupt sleep for exactly six hours, nor that a smaller serving is harmless at that interval. Use the findings as a reason to be conservative with late workouts, then judge your own sleep response.
A concise checklist before your next serving
- Confirm the exact C4 variant and read its current Supplement Facts panel.
- Record caffeine milligrams per serving and the number of scoops you plan to use.
- Follow that version’s water and timing directions; current Original directions specify 6–8 fl oz and 20–30 minutes before training.
- Include all other caffeine consumed that day.
- Consider how close the workout is to bedtime and whether previous caffeine has affected your sleep.
- Ask a health professional for individualized guidance if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, taking relevant medicines or managing a condition that may affect caffeine tolerance.
Bottom line
For the current Cellucor C4 Original page, the stated amount is 200 mg per serving, taken 20–30 minutes before exercise in 6–8 fl oz of water, with half a scoop suggested for beginners. An archived Original page lists 150 mg, and historical C4 variants range from 135 mg to 300 mg in Cellucor’s comparison article. Read your own container, total your day’s caffeine and treat late-day use cautiously because sleep effects vary.
