Effects creator Dave Presto estimated that Crystal Lake used “probably 50 gallons of blood, if not more.” That is an estimate he gave in an interview, not a verified production tally. The eight-episode Friday the 13th prequel is scheduled to begin streaming exclusively on Peacock in the United States on October 15, 2026.

What Dave Presto said about the blood

In a report published October 6, 2026, Gizmodo relayed effects creator Dave Presto’s comments to Entertainment Weekly. Presto said he asked whether the production wanted “level 10” gore and recalled creator and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane replying, “No, we wanna go 10.” Presto then estimated the production used “probably 50 gallons of blood, if not more,” adding that a gallon is a lot. Gizmodo’s report does not establish a measured total.

That qualification matters: the figure is Presto’s approximate estimate. It is not an audited count, and the report does not specify whether it refers to blood used across particular scenes, episodes, or the entire production. “Level 10” is also a phrase from a recalled conversation, not a formal gore rating.

How gory is the series expected to be?

Actor Linda Cardellini has described some of the show’s gore as practical and unpleasant to film. In Variety’s interview coverage, she said, “It does get gory, yes, so much so that I wish sometimes they weren’t as practical as they were,” and recalled a set moment with “Blood everywhere at one point.” Those comments indicate that practical effects are part of the production, but they do not establish how every effect was made or how graphic the completed episodes are.

Cardellini has also emphasized that the eight-episode format has room for more story than a feature-length horror film; she said the series is not simply “90 minutes of pure horror.” The blood estimate alone therefore does not describe the tone or content of the full series.

What is Crystal Lake about?

NBCUniversal describes Crystal Lake as a prequel centered on Pam Voorhees, a single mother whose young son Jason drowns in the town’s lake. Two strangers arrive to investigate Pam’s past, prompting townspeople to question who she is. Brad Caleb Kane created, wrote, and executive produced the series. The official announcement names Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom among the cast. NBCUniversal’s announcement says all eight episodes will stream exclusively on Peacock in the US beginning October 15, 2026.

Rank #2

Kane has framed the series as a story about the town and Jason’s mother, rather than the familiar film setup of teenagers being hunted at camp. He has also said it includes Easter eggs and recreations for fans of the original films. TV Insider reports that the series moves Jason’s drowning timeline from the 1950s to the 1970s; that detail comes from interview coverage, not NBCUniversal’s official synopsis. Kane’s comments on the approach and TV Insider’s interview coverage provide those details.
